Re: The Coaching Career of Danny Carmichael (NCAA 14)

Recruiting Update.png

The Aggies coaching staff's relentless approach to the recruiting trail is paying off. After the dominating win over New Mexico, the Aggies picked up 2 more commitments. Both are 3 star Cornerbacks.

With these 2 commitments, this brings the Aggies commitment total up to 7. 6 of these prospects are 3 stars and 1 is a 2 star prospect. On top of these commitments, New Mexico State is in very good shape to land most of the remaining targets left on the recruiting board.

The Aggies will be moving into the Sun Belt Conference starting in 2014 and if they do finish with the remaining recruits they lead for, this could land them the #1 Recruiting Class in the Conference. That would be a great entrance to their new Conference.

Commit Breakdown

John Bennett-3 Star Cornerback-6'0", 173 lbs- John Bennett is a solid cover corner. Depending on the progression of the other Cornerbacks on the roster, Bennett may take a redshirt year to bulk up a bit and get faster since his speed is 85. He's fantastic in coverage as his Man Coverage rating is 80 and Zone Coverage rating is 79. However, he's horrible at tackling which is something he will really need to improve on. Overall, this is a VERY solid pick up for the Aggies.

Bennett chose New Mexico State over North Texas, UTEP, Tulsa, and UTSA

Matt Williams-3 Star Cornerback- 6'1" 186 lbs- Matt Williams is another solid cover corner. Williams is more likely to play than Bennett based on his size alone. He has great height and weight for a cornerback, so he shouldn't get shoved around easily by taller Wide Receivers. Williams' best attributes are his 88 Speed, 79 Press Coverage, 77 Man Coverage, and 75 Zone Coverage. However, like Bennett, he is bad at tackling. So, he may redshirt his Freshman year as well.

Williams chose New Mexico State over UTEP, Tulsa, North Texas, and UTSA

Below is a look at the updated Recruiting Board going into Week 7

The Aggies currently are the top school for 12 of the 19 prospects still on their recruiting board. Here is a look at the updated recruiting board. The players names who are bolded are the players that New Mexico State currently leads for.

There were a couple changes to the Recruiting Board. 3 Star DE Micah Turner and 2 Star OLB Zach Williamson were added while 3 Star DT Michael Greer was removed from the board.

Re: The Coaching Career of Danny Carmichael (NCAA 14)

Week 8: Rice vs. NMSU Preview

Coach Carmichael Media Session

Coach Carmichael: It's been a minute since I've seen you all. Hope you guys are doing well. Anyway, we had a great win a couple weeks ago vs. our instate rivals. I thought it was really encouraging to see our guys bounce back in the way they did. They put the SDSU game behind them and just gave everything they had vs. New Mexico, and I think it really showed what we're capable of doing on a weekly basis.

However, we've got our hands full this weekend vs. Rice. They have some really solid players on their defense which may give us fits. MLB Cameron Nwosu is their Senior leader and their best player. If he wasn't a bit undersized, you'd be hearing a lot more about this kid, he has some serious NFL talent. They also have a ball hawking SS in Senior Paul Porras who we're going to have to account for on every play. It won't surprise me one bit to see him get drafted as well. On their defensive line, they don't have a really dominant, all around player, but they have a lot of pass rushers. So, our guys on the Offensive Line will have to play a great game to keep TraVaughn on his feet.

Reporter #1: Austin Franklin had a huge game in limited touches vs. New Mexico. Are you still finding ways to get him the ball?

Coach Carmichael: Of course. Not to take anything away from any of our other players, but Austin is one of the best, if not the best player on this roster. I'd also take him over any other Wide Receiver in this conference. But, we're still going to try and do whatever we can to get the ball in his hands and let him make plays, which he did vs. New Mexico.

Reporter #2: Coach Martin and this entire staff have really exceeded expectations so far...

Coach Carmichael: Well, that's not a question. But, we may have exceeded your expectations, but we are well below our expectations. We know that we have a lot of talent on this roster and we expect to win every game we play. However, we will start winning games by coaching these young men and we need to utilize their talents in game. If we do our jobs as coaches, then we will do this and apparently really shock some people with our success.

Reporter #3: If you do finish the season on a strong note, like you suggest you will, and other schools come calling for your services, will you leave after just one year?

Coach Carmichael: I'm not going to stand here and lie to you like some coaches who answer this question like "I'm focused on this team", then media members ask again and they go "No, I'm focused on this team" and then they leave for another job two days later.

So, to answer your question, honestly I'm not sure. It'll take a really special job to make leave NMSU. I love it here, and my family loves it here and I'm preparing to be here for the next 5-10 years. So, it really will take an incredible offer for me to consider moving myself and my family from a place that we're incredibly happy at.

Game Notes
Rice has the 10th best rushing attack in the nation while New Mexico State is statistically ranked as the 21st best team in the country defending the run. However, both teams are terrible at defending the pass as Rice is 112th in the country and New Mexico State is 115th in the country. This game will more than likely end up in a shootout. Even though New Mexico State is fresh off of a Bye, ESPN predicts Rice will win.

Re: The Coaching Career of Danny Carmichael (NCAA 14)

Week 8: Rice vs. New Mexico State

Las Cruces, NM -- What turned out to be a promising start to the game for the Aggies, quickly turned south.

After the first quarter, New Mexico State held the 10-7 lead and was playing some really good football. However, Rice would then completely dominate the rest of the game by outscoring the Aggies 27-0 over the final three quarters, to go on to win 34-10.

The only score of the game for the Aggies was HB Germi Morrison who capped off the drive with a 1 yard TD run right up the middle. Morrison finished with 21 carries, 75 yards, and 1 TD for the game.

Rice turned to two QB's in this game as QB Taylor McHargue was injured on a hit after he scrambled out of the pocket. He would not return to the game, so in came backup QB D. Jackson who had just about the same production as McHargue throwing the ball. McHargue's stats were 9/17, 129 yards, 2 TD's, and 1 INT while Jackson's were 8/17, 115 yards, 1 TD, and 0 INT's.

And it didn't matter who the QB was, their favorite target was their #1 WR Jordan Taylor. Taylor had 10 receptions for 143 yards, and 1 TD. It didn't matter who the Aggies tried to cover him with, he always found ways to get open.

What's Next?

New Mexico State will look to bounce back at home vs. Old Dominion (3-5).

Rice will to build on their 3 game winning streak as they play against UTEP (3-3) next Saturday, at home.
