Re: California Dreamin'

Destiny Delayed

After forcing the Portland Snowhawks to settle for Josh Lambo’s fifth field goal of the game and with the Los Angeles defense having kept the ex-Chargers offense out of the end zone thus far, the Rams held a 26-22 lead and were 8:37 away from securing their first NFC West championship since 2003. It had been a game in which Sean Mannion had been rendered merely human, committing three turnovers. An interception and a fumble had been converted into two of Lambo’s field goals, and a second fumble was returned 37 yards by Dexter McCoil for the touchdown that gave Portland a 19-12 lead at the 4:13 mark of the third quarter. But Mannion was also instrumental in the Rams being in position to lock down a division crown. His touchdown passes of 55 yards to Pharoh Cooper and 87 to Alshon Jeffery, the latter coming with 12:12 left in the game, put Los Angeles up 26-19. Lambo’s fifth field goal closed the following possession, then the Rams were forced to punt. The ensuing series was capped by Portland’s lone offensive touchdown, with Jerick McKinnon scoring from 7 yards out with 4:49 to go. When Mannion was sacked inside the 15 by a trio of Snowhawks, LA had no choice but to punt and hope for a quick defensive stop to set up a potential game-winning possession, or at least an overtime-forcing field goal. But Portland was not in a punt formation until there were only 19 ticks on the clock, and with the ball at the Los Angeles 42, Mike McCoy made a ballsy move in calling for a fake punt, and Drew Kaser’s 23 yard completion to backup safety Case DeAndrade sealed the Rams’ fate.

If the Seahawks win their Monday night game against the Cowboys, LA’s bid for the division title hinges upon defeating the Eagles at home in the regular season finale, or upon a Seattle loss at Kansas City next Sunday night.

Casey Hayward’s pick of a Sean Mannion pass intended for Alshon Jeffery was converted into 3 points.

Todd Gurley’s 56 yard dash got the Rams on the board for a 7-6 lead.
All but one of his TD’s this season have been scored from outside the red zone.

Former Bammer Ryan Anderson rolls up on Philip Rivers.

E.J. Gaines still leads all NFL DB’s in sacks.

Anderson’s second sack was good for a safety and a 9-6 advantage.

Jeremiah Attaochu’s recovery of a Mannion fumble led to 3 more Portland points.

Pharoh Cooper’s TD reception was a quick answer to Portland’s defensive score.

Alshon Jeffery’s long catch and run gave the Rams a 26-19 lead which unfortunately did not lead to a victory.

There's a sweeter set that I wish Madden had used when it took it upon itself to move them:

Week 17‘s Schedule, And What's In It For Each Team

Bengals (4-11) @ Bills (4-10-1): Pride for the winner, if any remains, and draft position for the loser.

Texans (8-7) @ Titans (11-4): Houston sits atop the wild card standings and would like to remain there by achieving a winning season. Tennessee has a chance for home field if the Steelers lose; a loss could have the Titans playing in the wild card round as the AFC’s 3 seed.

Buccaneers (9-6, 4-1 NFC South) @ Panthers (10-5, 3-2 NFC South): This is a battle for the NFC South title, and the Bucs risk missing the playoffs if they finish 9-7.

Ravens (7-8) @ Falcons (8-7): Baltimore can avoid a losing season and go into the wild card tiebreker mix if all of the contenders are 8-8. Atlanta can make this another winning season and likewise be subject to some number-crunching among 9-7 wild card candidates.

Lions (7-8) @ Bears (6-9): The Leos can salvage a .500 record after getting mired in a mid-season losing streak. At 6-6 Da Bears were a very dark wild card horse, but now they’re already assured of another losing season and only a win over a divisional rival is at stake.

Saints (5-10) @ Vikings (11-4): This is already the worst (and final?) season of Sean Payton’s tenure in Nawlins. A loss might put them in better position to move up in the draft if they feel the need to do so to select Drew Brees’ successor. On the other hand, if Brees (who has surpassed Peyton Manning in career passing yards) is leaning toward retirement, it would be nice for him to go out with a W. Minnesota has a chance to not only survive Teddy Bridgewater’s career-ending injury, but to secure the NFC’s home field advantage in spite of it. A loss could cost the Vikes a first round bye.

Cowboys (9-6) @ Redskins (6-9): Becuae of their divisional records, a Dallas win and a Philadelphia loss would make the 'Boys champions of the NFC East. It’s already a losing season for the 'Skins, but they can still play the spoiler and keep their arch-rival out of the postseason.

Giants (3-12) @ Jaguars (5-10): A loss will give the G-Men their worse record since 1983, when the first Bill Parcells team went 3-12-1, and will sew up the no. 1 overall pick in the 2019 draft. Win, and they may be tossing a coin with the Bengals for the top pick. That would be a coin toss that could impact the franchise for years to come, and their is no motivation for the Giants to put forth any kind of winning effort. If New York does lay down, the Jags will avoid the AFC South cellar regardless of what the Colts do.

Cardinals (6-9) @ 49ers (6-9): In what may be the final game of Bruce Arians’ coaching career, the loser lands in the NFC West cellar.

Dolphins (6-9) @ Snowhawks (7-8): With a coaching change in store, the Phins may as well drop another one and improve their draft stock. If the Snowhawks don’t manage to secure a wild card at 8-8, expect to see Mike McCoy on the Black Monday list.

Steelers (11-3-1) @ Raiders (8-7): A win gives the Steelers the AFC’s home field advantage, while a loss could force them to play in a wild card game. They have no chance at the AFC West title, but by achieving their first winning record since 2002, the Silver & Black would also put themselves in the playoffs for the first time since that year. Without Derek Carr and Dalvin Cook, however, it’s probably a forlorn hope.

Packers (10-5) @ Patriots (11-4): Green Bay is in a “win and in” situation, but a loss has the potential to make them 10-6 playoff bystanders. Individually, free agent to be Brett Hundley could significantly fatten his next contract by delivering a victory in a do-or-die situation. New England locked down its 10th consecutive AFC East title (and its 15th in 16 seasons), but needs a win and losses by Tennessee and Pittsburgh to secure a first round bye.

Eagles (10-5) @ Rams (9-6): Each team is in a situation where a win will be rewarded with a division crown, but a loss could end the season.

Browns (6-9) @ Broncos (7-7-1): At 5-4, the Browns looked like they could contend for their first playoff spot since 2002. But then they went and lost 5 straight before finally getting W #6 last week, and now nothing but pride and devaluing the first round pick they traded to San Francisco are a stake. Conversely, a Denver win couple with losses by Houston and Oakland would make the Broncos a wild card team in head coach Vance Joseph’s first year, which did not look like much of a possibility a month ago.

Jets (6-9) @ Colts (4-10-1): A 7th win for Gang Green would mean a two-game improvement over last season’s 5-11 record- which might be considered acceptable improvement under first-year (and first-time) head coach Jim Bob Cooter. Given the Giants’ lack of motivation to beat the Jaguars, the Colts are most likely unavoidably headed for the AFC South cellar and may as well lose one more in a play for the second or third overall pick in the 2019 draft.

Seahawks (9-6) @ Chiefs (9-6): The Seahawks will know what their prospects are before they take the field Sunday night in the final game of the regular season. A LA loss to Philly earlier in the day coupled with a Seattle win will make the Hawks the champions of the NFC West for the 6th straight year and for the 7th time in Pete Carroll’s nine seasons. If the Rams win, however, the Seahwks will be in grave risk of missing the postseason for the first time since 2011. KC has won the AFC West but cannot get a first round bye, so it’s mostly just playing to get a 10th win after faltering from 7-1 to 9-6.
