Also, what are some good franchise rules. I never set any and always make too many trades and loose interest or sign too many players. Is there a good rule to live by when it comes to trades in/off season and for free agent signing?

Re: MLB 15 Franchise Progress Thread

Were the Marlins saving this for October? They have looked much different so far in the postseason - with only traces of the inconsistent squad that muddled through the regular season showing through.

The Marlins' starters dominated the first two games of the NLCS. Clay Huff kept the Cardinals befuddled with his tantalizingly slow stuff to lead the way to an 8-2 win.

Game 2 was another dominating performance by Boeve. The Marlins bats didn't hit the ball too hard but Chris Taylor was a nuisance with a 4-for-4 performance and ended up scoring 3 of the team's 4 runs. Boeve did the rest, going the distance on a 6-hit shutout, including escaping the one big threat the Cardinals had - a bases loaded, no outs situation. A strikeout and a double play later, inning over.

Now it's back to Iwakuma, who will be on a short leash after his NLDS showing, then it's Bartlett's turn. The two days of rest for the bullpen might come in handy with those two coming up...

Late to the party but loving this game.

Started a franchise with the Cubs. Simmed the regular season. Pretty realistic results.

AL playoff teams- Blue Jays, Royals, Astros. Wild card was Yankees over Orioles.

NL playoff teams- Cardinals, Mets, Dodgers. Wild card was Cubs and Pirates.

My Wild Card game was awesome. Threw Arrieta and won 2-1.

Won the 1st 2 games against the Cardinals. Then had a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the ninth to close the series. Hayward triples off of Rondon, I intentionally walk 2 batters. Get 2 pop ups. 3-2 count and guy hits a line drive down the line and they score 3 runs.

Cursed I tell you. Going to try and close out the series tonight. Wondering if I should pitch Arrieta on short rest or try to win with Hendricks.

Decided to throw Hendricks and he delivered. I threw my first ever no-hitter in a baseball video game. Lots of ground balls. Was 1 walk away from a perfect game.

The game was only 1-0 for most of the game. Bryant doubled and Schwarber scored. Walked Hayward in the 5th. He's killed me in the series.

Got insurance runs from a Soler single and a single from someone else.

I'll go up against the Mets. The Yankees will battle the Blue Jays.

Facing the Nationals at the end of August as my Mets. Syndergaard on the bump. From inning 1-4, struck out 9 in a row. 17 total. Absolutely destroyed the Nationals. We won 5-0 and now they're 7.5 games back of us with about 30 left to go. It's getting intense.

Syndy went CG Shutout 1-Hitter and strook out almost 2 batters an inning. Best pitching performance I've ever had.

Things like that with Cueto need to be fixed for next year's version hopefully. I touched on it a little in my suggestions for that thread. It's odd cause players like Sabathia get signed to a 2 year 38 mil deal but Cueto goes unsigned. You could have offered Cueto a 1 year like 100K and he would have signed it. The last day of FA, if players aren't signed you can offer them anything and they will take it. Just how the game works. I don't do it cause it's lame but I just recently started getting the hang of the 30 team control.

Re: MLB 15 Franchise Progress Thread

As expected, Games 3 and 4 were a struggle for the Marlins.

Game 3 saw Iwakuma struggle once again, giving up 5 runs in 5 innings of work. The bullpen game in and kept the team in the game, and through 5, the Marlins were down just 5-4.

Unfortunately for the Marlins, the Cardinals bullpen was equally masterful and the game ended with that 5-4 score.

Game 4 wasn't as tight. The Marlins again dug themselves into a hole in the first half of the game. Bartlett, though, might have deserved a better fate as Santana's poor defense showed up with an error that extended the top of the 5th and allowed 3 runs to eventually score.

The Marlins could not recover from that as this time the Cardinals starter Jenkins contained the Marlins offense and his bullpen again took care of the rest.

The Marlins pen did again keep the game reasonable, allowing just 1 run in four more innings of work.

With the Marlins suddenly reeling and the Cardinals seemingly remembering that they were the best team in baseball this year, Mattingly is making a daring move to push Clay Huff to game six.

Instead, Damian Boeve will start Game 5 on short rest. This despite Huff having a brilliant outing his last time out.

"If this pays off, the Marlins could be a good shape if Huff keeps working that magic. If it doesn't, to say the Marlins will have an uphill climb is putting it mildly. They'd need to win two on the road with no momentum and with their best arm no longer available, " a local analyst commented.

Boeve's opponent will be a tough one - the young star Wacha will try to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.

Re: MLB 15 Franchise Progress Thread

The move to Boeve paid off as the young pitcher toughed out six innings even while laboring heavily.

He might not have been as dominating as his other two outings or his usual standard, but he was still very strong. Boeve allowed just one run in his six innings, striking out six and walking one.

The Marlins worked Wacha to death - making it a battle of two tiring starters. Michael Wacha had to throw 100 pitches just to get to the 5th inning. He struck out quite a few Marlins, but it cost him pitches and some walks. All told, he allowed 3 runs in 5 innings with 8 strikeouts. Considering that one of those was a home run by Davis and all of them came in the first two innings, Wacha might have had a heroic outing of his own if his team wasn't trailing.

The Marlins picked up two seemingly unnecessary runs in the 8th...but this is the Marlins bullpen we're talking about. Cody Allen gave up two runs to make it 5-3. He did at least finish the game so only two pitchers were needed.

The Marlins are in position to move on, but it still will be tough with only the underbelly of the rotation left and having to do it on the road.

Re: MLB 15 Franchise Progress Thread

The Marlins' title defense will fall short in the NLCS despite taking a 3-2 lead into the final two games.

Sadly for the Marlins, the feast-or-famine offense reverted to famine mode.

In Game 6, Clay Huff pitched a tough game, continuing to be at least decent in pretty much every start. He was a bit more touched up in this one, giving up 3 runs in 6 innings.

The problem, though, was Adrian Ryu. He struck out 14 Marlins on his way to a complete game victory.

The only run the Marlins scored came on a Will Moyer home run. Chris Davis went 2-for-4, but the Cardinals kept him in the ball park and the top two hitters did nothing to help.

Game 7 was even worse for the bats. Mattingly turned to Jacob Turner for game 7 instead of the struggling Iwakuma. The move paid off as Turner gave up no earned runs through 7 innings of work. The run that scored came on an error by Santana, again highlighting his inconsistent-at-best defense. He made his second error of the postseason, both at the most costly times.

That lonesome run was all Cooney needed as he, too, threw a complete game, this time a 4-hit shutout. This time, not even Chris Davis could muster a hit.

Perhaps a fitting end as one of the two biggest weaknesses of the team spelled doom for the Marlins when it mattered most.

Attention will turn to the offseason for the Marlins, though it's hard to say what exactly they should do. On paper, they are solid with players that have talent. Who should they look for? What offensive philosophy should they try? Are there players that will be out there for the Marlins to make a change even if they want to?

Meanwhile, in the playoffs, the Cardinals headed to the World Series to face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Angels put up a fight, but the Cardinals eventually overcame this opponent as well in six games to become the 2018 World Series Champions. The best team truly won.

RF Stephen Piscotty was named the World Series MVP. He batted .500 in the Fall Classic with 3 RBI. The Postseason MVP went to perhaps the best young hitter in baseball right now, 3B Javier Baez. He batted .328 in October with 8 HR and 21 RBI, truly leading the way for his ball club.

With that, 2018 draws to an end.

Re: MLB 15 Franchise Progress Thread

                          Early offseason news:

Marlins were happy to hear Manny Machado didn't agree to terms with the O's...until they saw what Machado is looking for...$28.5M/yr. That's...not going to be in the Marlins' range.

Perhaps the O's know something, though, as they offered him just $9M/yr. Now THAT is something the Marlins could get in on...

The Marlins seem to be emphasizing speed and defense in the coaching staff hires. They signed new 1st and 3rd base coaches, both who favor those aspects of the game.

                          Marlins Contracts:

Will Moyer and Donovan Solano might be departing Florida. Solano was not offered a contract during the exclusive period. Moyer was offered a qualifying offer, but rejected it.

Chris Davis will return after he signed a 5yr/$100M contract with the last year being a team option.

Adeiny Hechavarria will sign despite getting less than half of what his asking price seemed to be. His return may make it less likely that Solano returns, though it's not out of the question if the Marlins move Campos to 3B.

Downloaded the OS realism roster with updated transactions and fired up a new 'chise, this one with the Diamondbacks. I simmed to today's date, turned trading off to keep the rosters set, and drafted manually while also managing the rosters in regards to injuries. The Dbacks were 73-74 when I started. The playoffs are pretty much out of question as we're about six games back of the 2nd WC spot. The Dodgers ran away with the division. The Padres are in the thick of the WC chase but they are 2 games back of the second spot. The Giants continued their odd year curse as they are around .500 and out of the playoff chase. The Rockies are still terrible.

Somehow, even with Price and Tulo (for a full season, barring injury) the Blue Jays are awful this year. Sub .500, last in the AL East, out of playoff contention. The Red Sox and Yanks are tied for first right now. The Indians hold the other WC spot.

Current playoff teams: Cubs, Mets WC, Dodgers, Nationals, Cards

First game played in this chise: today's game at the Giants. Allen Webster got the start against Tim Lincecum. Cuban superstar Yasmany Tomas homered twice in a Diamondbacks road victory. Arizona won 5-1. Webster pitched four shutout innings before being replaced (pinch hitter.) I simmed the next game, the series finale, and Bumgardner dominated us, so we lost and fell to 74-75. My goal (according to my contract) is to finish above .500.

I open my next series against the Dodgers as Zach Godley (sub 2 ERA) squares off against Matt Latos. After that, I face the nasty 1-2 punch of Kershaw/Greinke. LA stands at 95 wins right now and they've had Corey Seager, Joc Peterson and Chase Utley for full seasons.

Re: MLB 15 Franchise Progress Thread

The NL East has been busy with the Nationals landing Machado (which made the Marlins' front office sick) standing out. Solano ended up joining the team that beat the Marlins in the NLCS - the Cardinals.

The Braves traded Miguel Sano, who's been something of a disappointment overall. If he ever finds a way to make consistent contact, look out.

Meanwhile, the offensive shake-up of the Marlins has begun with Carlos Santana being traded for a couple young infielders. This moves Jose Campos from SS to 3B. Campos played SS well during Solano's injury.

Chris Taylor will move back to SS from 2B. This makes 2B an open competition between a lot of young infield prospects, including those from the Santana deal, hoping for a chance...and Eric Young, Jr.

"I think I remember infield play, " Young, Jr. smiled when asked if he'd really play second base.

Young taking second base would check a lot of the "get speed and defense on the field" boxes for the Marlins. He is still one of the faster players in the game and his defense is still top notch, aside from arm strength...something that's less of a factor at second base than in his outfield positions.

The only places where there would be very little speed are 1B and RF. Even the likely platoon at catcher, Lindsay Robinson and Tommy Cruz, have decent speed and can steal a base or two.

First base is the home of Chris Davis, who might was well build a house there because he's going nowhere. Stanton, however, has rumors about him swirling.

If Young does indeed become starting 2B, that would clear a path for Matt Baldwin. For his struggles, Baldwin possesses ridiculous speed and has power in the bat. On paper, he'd be close to Carlos Santana, though with sprinter's speed and far better instincts in the field.

The question would be, "who would the Marlins want for Stanton?"

Francisco Lindor's name popped up, which would send Stanton to the Yankees.

"Stanton would LOVE playing in that park and the Yankees need a right fielder, " one analyst spoke.

The problem is Lindor may well become a full free agent, and is making more than Stanton is right now on an arbitration contract. Inconsistent as Stanton can be in the field and at the plate, his contract is still under team control and is team-friendly for a 30+ HR hitter in his prime years.

The Marlins passed on trading for Machado at last season's trading deadline for the same reasons.

The end of the season has arrived in my chise. I won the AL East by six games over those pesky Orioles. The O's take on the Red Sox in the Wild Card game. Believe it or not, I'm rooting for the Sox in this one as I'm tired of Matt Wieters hitting long balls against me.

But there was plenty of other storylines going on. The Brewers collapsed for the second straight season. The Mets stole the NL East from the Nats, and the Padres snuck in as the second wild card team.
