Basically, I view Blake Swihart as extra value I don't need at the catcher position because I play well with Christian Vasquez who is a superior defender. I figure I can use Swihart to get an upgrade over Eduardo Rodriguez (someone with a higher celing). This is based on the idea a rebuilding team would want to turn one current MLB piece into two good starters. Here are two options:

Given Eduardo's performance of 1.75 WAR in 2016 and what could be around 2.5 WAR in 2017, I assumed he will average around 2.3 WAR in his 4 remaining years of team control. Discounting the WAR over the 3 future years, while subtracting his 1.7M owed in 2 of the years and calculated arbitration value, I got a surplus value of $44.67M

I looked at Julio Teheran first. His value has been pretty back and forth in this thread. Some value him more than others, while the real life Braves say they want a good hitter in return. What I think is more important is his in game stats. Compared to Eduardo he has a higher ceiling 85 potential vs. 83 while performing slightly worse, 3.73 era vs. 3.61 era and 83 ovr vs. 79.

Based on his $20M owed in 4 years and assuming an average of about 2.5 WAR per season over those 4 years (multiplied by a discount factor), it would turn into about $50.4M surplus value.

Assuming I'm in the ballpark with the values, Swihart + Rodriguez is a solid base for Teheran.

Earlier I asked about Vince Velasquez (87 pot) from the Phillies but that deal didn't make sense because of Alfaro, so I removed Swihart out of the deal. With Vince owning a 3.27 and 3.31 era in 2016 and 2017, I assumed he'd average around 3.7 WAR over his remaining 5 years for a surplus of $87.3M.

What about Velasquez for Rodriguez + 20 yr LHP 67 ovr 85 pot as a base?

I don't think Swihart to Philly would be such a terrible thing. I understand Alfaro is there and why some would shoot that down, but hear me out..

Swihart has always been a bat-first type of catcher. I can't speak on his defensive skills because I haven't watched him much, so I have no valid opinion. Based off of what others say, there are always better in-house options behind the plate in Red Sox country. So much so that Swihart was playing some AAA outfield just to try to get him acclimated so his bat could be in the lineup.

I'm not sure what his stats were in 2016, forgive me if that was posted beforehand, but if he's hit well then I could see him being plugged into the Phillies outfield. Worst case scenario he keeps the catcher spot warm for Alfaro and then shifts to OF/1B. That way Alfaro isn't rushed, and who knows, the two could have similar potential and Swihart offers an immediate upgrade at the MLB level.

2016 I kept him in the minors for the full season. 2017 he has a .240 avg so far, and still has a bit to go before he maxes his 84 potential.

I just kept him out of the Velasquez offer because when I originally offered Swihart + Eduardo it was shot down by multiple people so I refined it.

If there's a really good guy who's slightly less versatile but can give relief at 4-5 positions with above average defense, I'd be very interested and willing to overpay.
Check out Arismendy Alcantara with the Cubs. He's listed at CF, but has secondary positions at 2B, SS, LF, and RF. I got him in my Mariners franchise and he hit .285 in 2016 and is hitting .291 with 12 HRs in 2017 at the start of August. He's a very solid defender and has good speed.

Yeah probably low B/high C potential prospect then. Just looking at some Twins prospects I think Adam Walker could do the trick.

My only problem with the deal is if Souza is playing poorly and the Rays aren't even starting him, then that might be an overpay, but if the Rays still think he can figure it out they probably wouldn't deal him. This is one of those situations where it becomes hard to distinguish your franchise from the actual MLB season.

Re: MLB 16 Trade Discussion Thread

Is the show crazy or is this a legit trade? The cubs are interested in both Miller and Eovaldi from the yankees. I think they should get both so in my franchise I asked the show to suggest who I give them for those 2 in return. One reply was repeated over the several times I tried.

Eovaldi and miller for zobrist rondon and then one other piece. Several times it was joe nathan who's 41 and a 76 ovr relief pitcher at this point in his career.

I want to trade zobrist and rondon anyway but even before setting up my trading block, thats who the yankees request every time. I suppose I could give the yankees one of the better 3rd players requested but why the hell do I want a 41 year old pitcher in my bullpen, or even minor leagues? Am I screwing the yankees over? I think miller and eovaldi are at the end of their contracts...

I actually just recently called up Walker because I sent down John Ryan Murphy due to Mauer catching some days with Suzuki. He's only played a couple days but I want someone who can play everyday and Souza was first in mind.

In my opinion, no it's not a legit trade, that's just an example of the still crazy trade logic. Not trying to complain about the trade logic as it will very likely never be perfect but it could use some more work. If you did that trade it would be screwing the Yankees over but it's your franchise of course. What position are the Yankess in a far as the standings go? If are in first or are still pretty close I don't see them moving Miller or Eovaldi. To be honest I don't see them moving Eovaldi in 2016 regardless of their position unless some team surprises them with an offer they can't refuse. If he can keep throwing like he has been pretty consistently through the rest of year his value will only rise so if they wanted to trade him they could get more next year. I'm pretty sure Miller actually has a few more years on his deal. Now if they were way out of it I could see them moving Miller and/or Chapman. People will have different opinions on this I'm sure but Chapmans more likely to go then Miller if only one goes because of Chapmans expiring contract. If the Yankees are in it, they don't make this deal realistically, if they are out of it, Eovaldi is not in this deal. Miller would definately be a realistic target if they are out of it but it would take some good prospects to get the deal done. If they are way out of it they aren't going to agree to a deal to get a 35 year old Zobrist and a 41 year old 76 overall relief pitcher who's likely to retire after the year (at least in the show anyway) and who's likely to keep regressing through the rest of the year. Nothing wrong with Rondon but that wouldn't be enough to land Miller. So no it's not a fair realistic trade but it's your decision if you want to do it anyway as it's your franchise and you should do whatever makes it fun for you.

The Cubs will not be trading Ben Zobrist.

I could definitely see them at least discussing the possibility of Andrew Miller, but a much more realistic trade would be Eovaldi + Miller for Ian Happ (who could actually be the 2nd coming of Ben Zobrist....switch hitter, can play multiple positions) + CJ Edwards (a prospect who is a reliever). Probably could add one more piece for the Cubs depending on how desperate the Cubs are for rotation or bullpen help

What would a possible return for the following guys looks like?

I am 83 games in and Buchholz has a 9-4 record with 3.20 ERA and 105k and 25 BB's. Not a fan of using him in the game. I am looking to move Joe Kelly, currently in the bullpen, with a 2.85 ERA 25Ks in 32 IP of relief.

Trades like this are hard to judge. IRL Buchholz lost his spot in the rotation but in game he tends to post decent numbers.... But IMO I can see you getting a few Mid to High C's for them.. I cant see a team giving them anymore then that.....

I'm a about 4 games for the AS game, and looking to make a move for another pitcher in my Cubs franchise. I was looking towards Oakland and Sonny Gray, the As are not a playoff team, and have already moved their closer. Would Soler, Almora, Johnson, and Underwood be close value for Gray.

                                A's get
                                Soler
                                Almora
                                Underwood
                                Johnson

                                Cubs get
                                Gray
                                Lowest rated player on roster.

I would have to do it in 2 trades, is the value close. Thanks for any info
