Re: Official MLB 18 : Road to the Show Thread

Started a pitcher late last week. I chose the plain filthy archetype, with my pitches being cutter, knuckle-curve and circle-change. I decided I wanted my 4th pitch to be a running or two seem fastball, but it did not give the options for either of those pitches so I opted for just a 4 seemer.

Anywho, I was drafted by the Cardinals and tore it up in double A. Was called up to triple A around the end of July and pitched well there too. I was invited to spring training and absolutely killed it as a reliever. Something like 16 IP 18Ks and a .55 ERA.

I was kept on the big league club as a LRP, kind of frustrating. I play on dynamic difficulty and it's currently up to legend +, so I've thought about taking that down a notch or two. Currently I have about 9 innings pitched with around a 3.50 ERA.

I wish they'd either let me start or send me back down for a bit so I could progress a little faster. So far it's been fun.

Saw this on mine.... but it seemed to be only when I had the trade slider decreased. On a couple of other saves I haven't seen at all...so weird bug.

I'm almost a full year into this mode and I've literally seen ZERO pitches that were not strikes... Is this a common thing?

I’ve got a real bone to pick with RTTS, as fun as it can be.

My Bat First Catcher was absolutely tearing it up in the postseason for the Dodgers. I was flirting with 20 RBIs over ten games but I was really aggressive on base; even with the pickoff slider turned all the way down, I was still being caught between 1st and 2nd. Still getting used to the baserunning, but it also doesn’t help that the fielder with the ball can suddenly turn, halfway through throwing the ball, and throw to a different base.

Dave Roberts calls me in, gives me the whole “Know your strengths” speech. I didn’t argue, despite having 87 speed and 72 Steal (this is a an import, mind you).

He benches me for the WHOLE World Series and we get swept by the Indians. This is simply illogical; I’m so frustrated, I don’t see myself touching The Show for a few days, maybe even weeks.

I don't walk a lot of people. But not all of my pitches are in the strike zone. Sometimes I purposely throw out of the strike zone and sometimes I don't have the control to always put the pitch where I want it to be. BTW I used classic pitching on HoF with all HUDs turns off. I have gone 100% clean screen and I love it.

On a different topic I decided to bring my original MLB 17 RTTS player over to MLB 18. He is a pitcher still in his first year currently assigned to the Pirates AAA squad. The first thing MLB 18 tried to do on me was convert me into being a relief pitcher before I even play a single game in MLB 18. I kind of complained, but then I went a long with it. However what happened next was now I was being forced to swap archetypes meaning he would be losing many skills he had developed in MLB 17 prior to even throwing out one pitch. I decided the try the import a 2nd time and this time I refused the position swap and I was benched. But I was not benched long. I was only benched for the equivalent of one start. So now I am back as a starter still in AAA. Not sure if this will effect a call up to the Majors. He is a 75 OVR and there are two MLB starters in the Pirates who are 72 and 71 OVR. So I do think he has a chance to be called up in the not too distant future and quite frankly I am perfectly happen playing out the rest of the season in AAA (I am in early July) if it means building his skills as a starter. Oh and the Pirates closer is an 88 and it would take a long time to surpass him if I stayed a closer in AAA. This also influenced the decision to try the import a 2nd time and not to accept the position change. Now this all has me thinking of my AA starter in the Braves organization who will be facing a position change request any day now. Should I refuse the swap if it means only being benched for one start and would this effect a possible call up to AAA? With my Pirates pitcher in MLB 17 I did go along with the Closer position change and that only lasted a few weeks before being restored to being a starter and then being called up to AAA after my first start back. But in MLB 17 I was not dealing with archetypes. I don't want to mess with the progress of my AA starters skills regarding his archetypes which mainly surrounds his hitting skills. Once I get there I want to bat as a pitcher in the Show and this is why I purposely created both pitchers in MLB 17 to ensure that I would be on NL teams. I am capped at only 35 in both my contact and power hitting skills which is not a lot. But it's better than having those skills wiped out because the game force me to be a relief pitcher.

So is there no way to get another agent besides John Kent? The conversation option pops up once you get to the bigs but no matter what I choose I automatically get put with friggin John Kent

Hey everyone, new to the forum here. Quick question which I'm sure has been discussed at some point. I'm playing as a SS (good hands) and my arm strength is currently 65 with a cap of 80. How the hell do I upgrade arm strength? Everytime I see it in the training it always has a gold bar around the 65, but never increases my arm strength. How am I supposed to increase this stat when it won't even do it through training?

For those that think that the current setup with archetypes prevents you from ever being a superstar, 5 tool player - the good news is you're wrong. If you build your player up and max out the archetype caps and strategically equip him with the equipment that boosts the attributes.... he becomes an absolute beast. My player is at or close to all the hitting and fielding caps and I have mostly gold equipment equipped and is almost unrealistically good. I've had to bump my difficulty from Hall of Fame to legend because I was smashing balls out and all over the ballpark with the circle, contact swing. Let me give some advice for some people that have complained about the way the ball physics seems to be (I was one of em) working this year. When you get your player built up in the higher attribute ranges.... I HIGHLY recommend using the circle swing. There are some absolutely fabulous rips down the line, in the gap, HR's, etc. I am currently using nothing but the circle swing with this player the majority of the time because these types of hits/drives are more fun than watching the majority of the HR's with the X swing. My player is also making web gem fielding plays, stealing bases (given green light by manager), etc. Point of all this is to let those know that don't know or think otherwise that in no way does the archetypes prevent you from becoming a MONSTER.
Fyi if you're on HOF difficulty while in the majors you are already playing on legend so bumping it up did nothing

You probably have to build up your power or something first. With my pitcher I've notice if some of your attributes are a lot higher than certain others it won't increase and you have to find the attributes linked to it and improve them till you can improve the other ones.

Same. 18 BB through June of my first AA season. I play on Legend now (true Legend in fact, thanks to Dynamic difficulty), though I started on HOF.

It's all about the difficulty level when it comes to the CPU pitcher aggressiveness - in AA if you're on All-Star or below you aren't going to likely see enough pitches out of the zone to be able to walk. One of the ways that the game is easier on its lower levels is giving the player more good pitches to hit than would be considered "realistic".

I play on a lower level mostly because I just want to relax an play and I still walk a decent amount if I'm not being over aggressive
