Re: MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)

After doing my roster I finally started my fantasy Braves franchise.

Usually I will play some spring training games to get a feel for the game, but this year just jumped into opening day. I put the game on VET/VET. I didn't want to get crushed on my usual AS/AS, or HOF/HOF in my first go around.

    ATL 7 11 0
    PHI 1 4 0

Hit 3 home runs (directional/center swing and 2 doubles, one going over Harpers head).

Harper struck out three times....doh! I struck out 7 times and drew 3 walks.

Certainly I want more of a challenge, so i'll move it up to AS/AS next game (long season), but the game played great.

Oh, I bunted with my pitcher. Last year, 99.999999% of the time it would have been a rocket bunt down to first base. This year a lazy bunt in the air short hopped by the 3rd baseman, so that was nice to see.

Announcers are off, stadium sounds are great, have a few SOTS in the game, and especially in between innings music, so good to go. 30 team control, will make the daily moves, back in the saddle.

I will probably make better use of QUICK MANAGE this year and jump into the game in crucial times.

If they patch the pre-pitch presentation into the quick pitch mode, it will be heavenly (this has been passed onto the the dev), so we'll see.

Right now 9.5 out of 10 from me.

Each game played I become enamored with just how good the fielding is in this game. I thought the fielding in '18 was good, but I had no idea what good was until I played '19. Actually the fielding is great.

The amazing plays, the fluidity in which it happens, just everything about it is head and shoulders above its predecessor. And the "talent" gap from gold glove fielders to poor fielders is done really well.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Playing as the White Sox and using Daniel Palka in RF, I can atest to this lol. He isn't a great outfielder in real life (though he made a sick grab yesterday!), and it shows in MLB '19. Almost every fly ball hit out there, I can see him coming in a step and then saying oh crap and running backwards, before I even get control of him lol.

Nice to see that Clyde Washington is as crossed-eyed as ever.

I thought maybe this past offseason he would've gotten corrective eye surgery.

I'm really enjoying this game! The faster pitch speeds are a welcomed addition and the fielding rating tweaks and animation upgrades have added some new strategy and depth to defense.

I played over 350 games on MLB 18 in my Mets franchise. I think I'll get to that number and beyond with 19.

I've been playing The Show since 2010. Haven't missed a season. I downloaded 2019 this afternoon and in my opinion, this may be SCEA's best version to date. Graphics and lighting are gorgeous. Presentation is tight and well done. Game play is superb and challenging. I play on All Star pitching and hitting with a clean screen. Classic pitching and analog hitting. My first full game was the Rays (me) vs the Yankees at Yankee stadium at night. Rays won 1-0 on a solo home run by Brandon Lowe that just cleared the right field wall. Several innings were nail biters when the Yankees were threatening but I was able to get out of the jam. Loved how the sky color changed from the sun being out to a lavender to finally dark. Details like that just add to the immersion. Aside from that, I really don't see how people are complaining about frame rate issues. The only time I saw frame rate problems was when the game was installing and you can only play with Boston and LA. Once the game completed its installation, everything has been smooth. Very happy so far with The Show 2019 so far. Nice job by Ramone and his team at SCEA. Great work guys...take a bow.

Would love to agree but I played Niko Goodrum at SS last night (don’t remember his rating but it’s not high at all, like 57 or something) and he was a wizard out there.

I am getting racked in Diamond Dynasty. Pitching was the thing I excelled at in 18. I get singled to death and they need to seriously change the overcompensation they have for a fielder playing their secondary position. Just because Joc Pederson plays CF instead of LF doesn't mean he should completely lose the ability to field a grounder. Absurd.

I do like the cleaner look, but they seriously need to nerf the hitting a bit.

                            The good:

This year's entry pushes SDS's strength to another level. While the ball is in play, this game is exceptional. Pitching, hitting, and fielding have all recieved several minor updates, and while there is no one thing that I can point to as a big deal, they all culminate together into a far superior experience. When that ball is in play, there is no doubt in my mind that MLB 19 the Show is the best sports game that ever existed.

                            The bad:

When the ball isn't in play however, the Show starts to look really ugly and archaic. Commentary drones on as it always has, sapped of emotion and far to prone to sweeping generalities in order to "hide the magic". Franchise has stubbornly refused to evolve, handing out token improvements with poor implementation for 4 years in a row, all the while suffering from very real issues like roster limitations, the rigid secondary position system, and an absolutely outdated progression/regression system. The pause menu hides the most needed items in sub menus (can you believe you have to go through a sub menu to get to your bullpen?). The menu lag is real. I've misclicked several options in menus because it was lagging behind. Outside of the on the field gameplay, this game is an absolute mess.

                            The ugly:

Bugs and legacy issues. Bugs and legacy issues everywhere. Pitchers are being forced into the DH spot on carry over saves. Select infielders will still ignore the order to shift if there are runners on base. Pitchers will still inexplicably walk out with energy missing with no reason or explanation. Despite the fact that tons of new and great fielding and tagging animations have been added, I still see the lazy half asleep sweeping tag (just being your freaking hand down!) AND the unnecessary crow hop on throws from the outfield (please send me a video of ANY major leaguer doing that ever). Far, far less often then they used to, but they still pop up on occasion to haunt me. The is more, but it is late and I am tired.

Conclusion: if gameplay is king for you, then you owe it to yourself to get 19. Seriously, if you thought 18 was a big improvement, you ain't seen nothin. If you're more concerned with off the field improvements and polish, especially as a franchise player, then it's a skip year. I'm not trying to be hyperbolic, I genuinely feel that past iterations were better off the field experiences. Especially in menus. Never thought I'd see the day when is actually miss 18's menus, but here we are.

As stale and as behind the times franchise mode is this year, especially compared to what NBA2k produced, the gameplay is so good that I feel like I can forgive it. Seriously, the on field gameplay is closer to its respective sport than any other sports title and it's not even close at this point. I play with All-star hitting using directional with contact and solid hits lowered one tick and HOF classic pitching and the game feels perfect for me as each team is averaging 7-10 hits per game.

Also, I'm way happier than I should be that Chuck Nasty finally got a new scan. That is worth $60 by itself.

This is what is so beautiful about this game..

In my previous game before the one I just completed...the Mets beat me 12-6. There were a combined 26 hits and 7 homeruns.

Game I just finished against the Tigers...we won 1-0 on a go ahead/game winning single in the Top of the 9th. Zero homeruns and a combined total of 10 hits.

This game is soooooo damn good.
