Re: MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)
The Good
- Infield fielding overall is improved. Groundball throws to first seem more fluid and life-like.
- Some jerseys look a lot better. Mainly jerseys with thick lettering like the Angels. It seems like they increased the width of the template for logos on the front of uniforms to be a little closer to real life. I still think jerseys with normal/thinner lettering and numbering suffer the "painted on" look instead of a patch look.
- Face scans seems greatly improved.
- More bloop hits, which in turn gives a little more hit variety.
The Bad
- The framerate, sweet jesus the framerate. Unacceptable honestly.
- Pop ups still have an oddly short hang time, which makes fielding them look a bit awkward.
- Almost every diving play results in the ball just hitting the glove like a brick wall and dropping straight down to the ground, which gives off a very unauthentic look.
- no new equipment, hairstyles, etc. Just not much new in general when it comes to customization.
- the commentary, which is probably number one for me. Yes its improved, by a fair amount actually, but at the end of the day its still just the same tired voice in the booth that weve heard for over a decade.
The verdict
Every year, the show pulls you in showing you glimpses in your first couple games of everything that has improved from previous releases. It makes you forget the complaints you had pre-release and lets you just enjoy the game of baseball. But then the honeymoon is over, and you start getting reminded why this game is growing stale for you. Its a great game, but at the same time its just becoming a typical "MLB the Show" release where you expect the little changes and kind of leave it at that. For some people thats plenty enough to keep them playing all year and kudos to them.
I honestly just feel like a new commentary booth would shoot energy back in to this franchise and make it feel like a completely different game even if not much else was changed. I don't know how many more years I can handle hearing Rhys Hopkins being a Sacramento native 3 times a game, Plesac saying "D-Ro" and the other typical Matty V sayings. I get it would kind of mess up the MLB TV package presentation but Im at the point now where I wish they would just hire 2 full time aspiring commentators to just sit in a room all year recording commentary, including conversation type commentary that you hear in NBA.
So I'll give it a 7/10. Great, appreciated little improvements, but thats about it. Not overly satisfied, not disappointing, its just "The Show." But the fact that its becoming "just another year of The Show" in of itself is a bit disappointing, and I really hope for a leap next year.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)
Sometimes Sony does stuff and I say "Damn, that's genius". That was what I said this year when I first heard about the new Moments mode. Who wouldn't want to go back and replay famous MLB moments? Genius idea.
Then I realized it wasn't genius at all. In fact, it was a giant waste. Here we have this GREAT idea and then Sony ruins all of it's potential with one glaring omission.
Why would anyone want to play these great classic moments with current rosters? I don't want to hit Jose Bautista's majestic HR against 2019 players. Why not let us use our own custom rosters for Moments? Moronic.
Easy solution for Sony/SDS - allow custom rosters in Moments AND March To October and if custom rosters are used, disable rewards. Patch it in SDS!Comment

Re: MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)
First impressions after one game:
-Thought I put the wrong disc in because the menus look essentially exactly the same as last year, but now with even more stuff I don't care about.
-David Bote's facescan looks like a bee stung him on the nose. I'm not even sure that was Bote who got scanned, looks nothing like him.
-Nice to see it's the same Schwarber facescan from like three years ago. Really makes you feel like you're playing a brand new game when guys have such outdated models.
-No Duane Underwood or Jen-Ho Tseng, both of whom are on the 40-Man roster and played in the Majors last season. Remember when anyone who played in the MLB would be added the following year? That was nice.
-Game feels essentially the exact same, but hitting feels sluggish or slower. That's either good or bad, I guess, depending on how you felt about the previous game. Fielding feels the same, not sure if that was supposed to be updated?
-The weird camera cuts before batters doesn't remind me of a baseball game on TV if that's what they were going for. There aren't camera men standing behind the pitcher on the field to the left and other weird angles.
-The game still is the worst sports game at making it feel like you're watching a real game on TV. The presentation just isn't there.
-Heidi Watney's character model is terrifying, but her lines at least kind of help make the game feel "new"
-I still see the same animations that have been in the game for years. You win the game and see the Manager slightly turn to shake the hitting coach's hand, like you have for the past dozen or so MLB The Shows.
-At least it seems they cut back on the ridiculous amount of "SUPER ANGRY BATTER, GONNA THROW MY BAT OR KILL SOMEONE" animations from last year.
-Still way too many ground rule doubles.
Anyway, that was after one game. May come back for more impressions later or I might just copy and paste my First Impressions post from last year because that'll go along with the theme of this series.
See if anyone gets that reference....
I must be playing a different game, or just a tad bit optimistic, or not a negative Nancy. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]
But wow, just wow. The game Rocks!!

Re: MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)
I really like the game. I feel like it’s an upgrade over 18 in pretty much every way.
My only complaints are, the intro video is pretty weak. And I’m not sure why they got rid of the different players popping up in the start screen. I don’t want to see Harper every time I turn the game on. It was refreshing to have a different face here and there.NFL - Las Vegas Raiders

Re: MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)
My initial impression after only a couple innings is not a positive one unfortunately. The dreadful frame rate and stuttering is an eyesore. Maybe I will grow accustomed to it with time, but as of right now the issue makes me not even want to play. Which is a shame too because I was really looking forward to playing a franchise over the summer after taking the past few years off.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)
After reading all the good and bad impressions, I decided to rent from redbox and not blown away at all. The show has always been a good game....But nothing screams run out and drop $65 for this years game.
Hopefully they will patch the frame rate issue, because the show is one of the few gems around and I'd hate to see this game slip into complete mediocrity.Florida State Seminoles

Re: MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)
After today I stopped playing the game until SCEA comes out and fixes the frame rate...It is gross on all levels that a game can be released like this.
There is more than enough evidence on the thread for FPS issues that many many are having the same issue so am not sure where these Super Smooth gameplay fans are coming from.
The rest of the game is irrelevant until the fix the frame rate and judder issue. No way a game in 2019 after being released yearly should this be acceptable
Shame on IGN and other sites for not mentioning this....Comment

Re: MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)
Perhaps it’s coming from us not having your issue, if it was so “gross” (your words) then everyone would be raising hell, dontcha think? This entire thread would be on fire.....it’s not. You’re officially out of the game, so we get it, no sense in trying to accuse everybody else of hiding it.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)
This crossed my mind while playing yesterday. All previous installments of The Show were played on a Sony TV. My new TV is a Samsung and do remember hearing folks mention a stutter effect on those in years past.
Could be a cause of the problem for me, or maybe not. Either way I am highly disappointed to be experiencing it now.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)
I still feel as though CPU baserunners react a hair too quick on balls in the dirt, thus leading to gaining an extra base or providing an easy out.
It's like they don't take a split second to see exactly where the ball is going to after it hits the dirt and isn't fielded cleanly, they just immediately take off. It's not all the time obviously, but it happens frequent enough that I hope SDS looks at it.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
