Cards lose series to Padres. 9 games out

The Cardinals again lose 2 games of a 3 game series, this time to the Padres. The Cardinals lost the first two games of the series, but were able to avoid the sweep by winning the series finale behind a stellar pitching performance of Carlos Martinez.

Drew Harrington was knocked around in the series opener, but the offense tied the game at 3 late. Matheny went to Zack Burdi who proceeded to struggle and not keep the game tied, giving up 3 runs and taking the loss. In game 2, Michael Wacha didn't have his command (6 walks) and the bats couldn't solve Oscar De La Cruz, who pitched a complete game giving up a solo homerun to Tulowitzki and a single to Bader as the only hits while fanning 14 in route to a 5-1 victory. Carlos Martinez would dominate the series finale to get a 2-1 win. Martinez went 8 innings giving up 3 hits including a solo homerun to Josh Naylor and striking out 12. Trevor Rosenthal would get his 23rd save of the year striking out 2 of the 3 hitters he faced. Juan Fabregas' 2 run double in the 6th was the only runs the Cards would get, but all they would need.

The Cardinals are off on Thursday before travelling to Cincinnati for a 3 game weekend series against the Reds. The Reds are currently 4 games ahead of the Cardinals in the wildcard. The Cardinals will finish out July with a trip to division leading Pittsburgh for a 3 game mid-week series.

    July schedule:

    3 @ CIN
    3 @ PIT (3rd game August 1st)

    STANDINGS

    Pittsburgh 64-38
    Cincinnati 60-44 (5 GB)
    Chicago 58-43 (5.5 GB)
    St.Louis 55-47 (9 GB)
    Milwaukee 42-59 (21.5 GB)

    WILDCARD

    Cincinnati (-)
    Chicago (-)
    St.Louis (3.5 GB)
    Los Angeles (6 GB)
    Arizona (8 GB)

Cardinals claim Jon Lester off waivers from Yankees

The Cardinals made a surprising move by claiming 38 year old Jon Lester off waivers from the Yankees. Lester was surprisingly outrighted by the Yankees after returning from injury. Lester has only appeared in 12 games for the Yankees out of the bullpen. He's pitched 38.1 innings over 12 games gaining a 1-1 record with 2 saves and a 1.88 ERA. The outright assignment was a surprising move to the say the least.

The Cardinals will add Lester to their rotation in hopes his veteran leadership can help propel the Cardinals back into the playoffs for a 7th straight season.

Drew Harrington who has struggled his last two starts was optioned to Memphis to make room on the active roster. The Cardinals had an open 40 man roster spot.

      2019 Texas Rangers Fantasy Franchise

June 25: Tough Homestand for us as we finished 3-4 and now sit at 52-26(MLB best) and have a 6 game lead over Oakland. We split the 4 game series with the first place Indians(49-29) in what could be a preview of the ALCS as we’ve been the top two teams in the league up to this point. Still plenty of baseball to go though. After that we played the last place White Sox and they took two out of 3 from us.

Disappointing to have a losing Homestand. Our pitching was terrible. We went from being top two in the league in ERA a few weeks back to now dropping down to 9th place. We gave up no less than 5 runs in any of the 7 games while being outscored 50-40.

Matt Carpenter HR counter through 78 games: 34

As we approach the halfway mark on the year we’ll play 3 games @ DET(37-39) and TB(34-46) before returning home. We are 12-2 over our last 14 road games so hopefully we can keep that momentum going after the poor showing for the home crowd.

        Start of Season - 2022

Lost my notes so cant remember exactly how the offseason and Spring Training went.

After last season we had a few decisions to make on pending free agents. We decided to bring back Salvy, Soler, Anthony Deslafani and Zach McAllister. We gave Salvy a 2 year deal worth 40 million. First year is worth 18.5 million. 2nd year has a mutual option worth 21.5 million. Jorge Soler signed a 1 year deal worth 6.8 million. Deslafani got a 2 year deal worth 9 million. First year has is worth 4.8 million and the 2nd has a team option worth 4.2 million. We picked up an option on Zach McAllister worth 1.6 million. We decided not to extend an offer to Danny Duffy.

Made a couple of moves in free agency. Biggest one was to bring in Mike Foltynewicz. He received a 3 year deal worth 39 million and a player option on the 3rd year. We also picked up JP Crawford on a minor league deal with the chance to earn a spot in ST. We picked up reliever Austin Davis in the Rule 5 draft from Philly. He hadn't pitched in the majors since 2018.

Going into ST there were quite a few spots on the roster up for grabs. Brady Singer and Scott Blewett won the last 2 spots in the rotation while Jake Kalish won a spot in the BP as the long reliever/spot starter. Austin Davis won the last spot in the bullpen beating out Adam Warren who we traded to the Giants for 26 year old OF Heath Quinn and 25 year old Reliever Garret Cave. Kelvin Guttierez earned the starting 3B job. While J.P. Crawford, Jake Noll, Erick Mejia and Meibrys Viloria earned backup spots.

        Minor League Rosters
        Spoiler

Brady Singer and Khalil Lee have now left the top prospects list as they have graduated to the Major League team. Our new #1 prospect Connor Christiansen got a little time in the majors last year as we felt pressured to add offense when Whit Merrifield went down. It didnt go so well for him as he hit .184/.244/.307 in 114 AB. He just barely qualifies as a rookie still. Needed 8 more days on the roster or 16 more at bats. Would have passed that in September last year if not for an injury. I would expect him to come back up at some point this year but im gonna try my best to not rush it. The rest of our top prospects in AAA this year could also make their MLB debuts at some point this season. #2 Nick Pratto, #5 Seuly Matias, #7 Kris Bubic and #8 Daniel Lynch.

        Top Prospects
        Spoiler

For the 2nd straight year, we open on the season on the road in Cleveland. We have 26 games before the end of April. 11 will be at home and 11 will be against 4 teams that averaged 102 wins last season. Overall not to bad of a start to the season. Hopefully, we can be a little more healthy this year and not have our best player be ice cold through the first month.

I did think about doing that. And may end up trying that at some point. But right now, I don't want to put in the time to get it to AS+.

It's only been three games, but I've been pretty happy with the adjustments to the timing slider so far.

Cardinals activate Carson Kelly from IL, option Francisco Pena

The Cardinals activated Carson Kelly from the 10 Day IL on their off day Thursday. Kelly was on the IL due to pulled hamstring. In a corresponding move, the Cardinals decided to option Francisco Pena to Memphis instead of Andrew Kninzer. Kninzer was recalled when Kelly went on the IL and was the primary starter during that time. Kninzer currently is hitting .273 with 5 RBI's, but is 6 for 6 in gunning down attempted base stealers.

Carson Kelly will return to the starting role obviously but expect the Cardinals to give him more frequent days off with Kninzer as the backup, given how Kninzer is producing.

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

I've decided to see if I can rebuild the Baltimore Orioles. Using the latest Full Minors rosters, I'm going to attempt to turn them into a competitor. Farm system is marginal, major league talent is horrendous.

I'll update with the first season worth of transactions possibly tonight or tomorrow. I traded away all of the bad contracts, getting anything in return, basically just looking for salary relief. So Chris Davis is gone, Mark Trumbo gone. Alex Cobb and Andrew Cashner are gone too.

Locked up a few of the young major league players (Mancini, Mullins, Givens) to try and build a core.

Won 47 games I think in 2019 year one........ so we will see where it goes from here. Going to try and spend some in free agency for one or two players to build around... if they will come.

                Game 2:
                Ryu vs Wainwright

                REDBIRDS CAN’T SOLVE RYU

Wainwright looked sharp and determined and was near flawless with the exception of a couple hiccups in the fifth inning that he minimized very well. But Ryu would do better and claim the day as his! The Dodgers scratched 2 runs across in the 5th that would prove to be plenty! Chasen Shreve would again come in relief and look razor sharp through 3 innings of work! Definitely turning heads in the organization, as a quality left handed arm would be very welcome at the major league level! Mendoza pitched a flawless ninth as well making his own statement. The series now moves to Oklahoma where the Redbirds will need to win 2 of 3 to advance. Tall order to say the least! A couple young arms are penciled to start game 3 with 21 year old Johan Oviedo scheduled for Memphis and 22 year old Yadier Alvarez scheduled for OKC. Memphis has already said they’re strongly considering moving Gomber into that game 3 start and moving Oviedo potentially to game 4 to face off against an even younger Dodger starter, 19 year old Robinson Ortiz.

Well, I finally got in a solid bit of gaming yesterday. I continued my losing streak with a clubbing from the Rockies 11-1. But I finally got of the schnide in the final game of the series winning 3-1 and snapping that 8 game losing streak. I followed that one up with a win on the road in Milwaukee to start a very important 3 game series versus the Brewers. Every game is important at this point in the season.

Current Record: 62-69 (8 GB of the WC)

About to fire up the stream and play the final two games of the series against the Brewers. Hoping to keep this win streak going!

REDBIRDS 1 WIN AWAY FROM LCS

                    Game 3:
                    Austin Gomber vs Yadier Alvarez

The Redbirds would indeed start Gomber instead of Oviedo. The concern was that this Dodger team has no left handed bats at all in their lineup, and when they face LHP they plug in A.J. Pollock and Kike Hernandez! Both are extremely dangerous bats against Lefties! Memphis would jump up 2-0 in the second. Gomber looked good, but definitely allowed his share of hits, getting into trouble but quickly working out. Until the fifth inning when Pollock would catch a hanger crushing it to deep left tying the game at 2. The Redbirds would respond promptly in the top of the sixth however scoring 3 on timely hits, some old fashioned hustle and a little help from a couple misplayed balls by the Dodgers defense, putting them back up 5-2 heading to the 7th! Whitley pitched a quality 6th and Leone would take over in the 7th, loading the bases with 2 outs and Hernandez at the plate. But he would wiggle out of trouble getting Hernandez to pop out harmlessly to Wong! Leone would get through the 8th and Mendoza would take over to finish in the 9th with the Redbirds up by 4, so Brebbia would not be needed yet again. At least he’s fresh and ready for whatever might come in games 4 and/or 5! This is an exciting series for the entire Cardinals organization who are hungry for a level of respect in this new baseball universe, but have yet to earn it! Winner of this series will move on to face the Giants affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats, who swept the Padres affiliate, the El Paso Chihuahuas!

The San Francisco Giants finish the first portion of their season 19-10 fuelled by a red-hot offense. Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, Buster Posey, Chase D'Arnaud, and Evan Longoria all have above a .310 batting average, and 6 players all have about 4 home runs in 30 games. Belt especially has been on fire, as he has notched 26 RBI's already through this young season. However, our pitching staff has been fairly volatile, as 2 of our 5 starters are above a 4 ERA, and all but one are above 3.30.

This hot start has raised questions upon the Giants future this season. Should they keep on track to build up a prospect pool? Or with the 3rd overall pick this year, and 5 more directly after, should they leave it up to the scouts to build the farm back up in a quick manner.

Speaking of the third pick, current mocks have the Giants taking 2B Mariano Perez at their pick. The International prospect is a physically complete player with excellent contact and fielding.

After giving up 26 runs in 2 games, I allow 1 the following game. Baseball, man.

Jacob de Grom's rough 2020 continues and he's now on the 10-day DL with triceps tightness. He's 3-5 with a 4.64 ERA, a far cry from 2019's NL MVP and Cy Young.

Mets are 31-11 on the season, 7 games ahead of the Phillies and 8.5 ahead of the Nationals.

                          Finished May 2019.

The Braves are 42-16, 9.5 up on the Nationals in the East. The Mets and Phillies are right behind Washington. We have a ridiculous 26-3 mark at SunTrust Park.

Freddie Freeman (May Player of the Month) and Josh Donaldson (April POTM) are 1-2 in the MVP race. Folty is the leader for the CY Young. Freeman, Donaldson and Acuna are leading vote getters for the NL All-Star team.

The division races are kind of boring at this point. The Cubs and Dodgers have commanding leads as do the Yankees, Indians and Astros.

Cardinals to play dual roles at deadline

With 5 days left until the trade deadline and the calendar flips to August, the Cardinals find themselves 10 1/2 games out of first in the Central division, but just 3 1/2 games out of the wildcard. With the chances of winning the division being slim, but the chances of making the playoffs as a wildcard team feasible, the Cardinals expect to play dual roles over these next 5 days. One role will be to maintain the path of pursuing a 7th straight playoff appearance. The other role, will be becoming sellers at the deadline.

                            I know..confusing.

The Cardinals aren't going to go into full sell mode and write off the 2022 season, but they also aren't going into full playoff or bust mode and trade away the future to win a championship today. Coming into the 2022 season, on paper, the Cardinals looked like a betting favorite to return to the World Series. 4-5 months later, they look to be a betting favorite to miss the playoffs all together. It's not that the Cardinals have played bad (7 games over .500), its that the Pirates, Cubs, and Reds are playing much better than them, the Pirates by an exceeding margin. Could the Cardinals catch fire, the other 3 catch colds, and the Cardinals win the division? Sure! I could also get one swing against Aroldis Chapman's fastball and hit a homerun. The chances are about the same.

There are only 3 names at this time at least the Cardinals have considered. And keep in mind that each of these 3 names are more than likely not going to be on the roster next Spring. Those names (and their heir replacements)

                            Troy Tulowitzki (Ozzie Albies)
Andrew Miller (a number of players most notably Corey Littrell)
                            Tommy Pham (Corey Ray)

When the Cardinals acquired Albies from the Twins about a month ago, it was pretty much set in stone that Tulo wouldn't be back. It even increased the chances that in this situation, Tulo would be traded. And it appears that is going to be the case. The Cardinals and Padres have been in talks the last few days and it seems all but a done deal, that Tulo is going to San Diego within 5 days. The return is still being worked out.

Andrew Miller has a strong market right now. He's a veteran, he's left handed, and he's having a good year. Several teams would be interested. Nobody in particular is the front runner at this point. Expect the Cards to contact the Braves about interest because there is a SS prospect, Floyd East, the Braves have in their organization the Cardinals are highly interested in. He was the Cardinals top draft target last June, but the Braves snagged him 4 picks before the Cardinals turn came up.

Tommy Pham is a hard decision to make. He is a fan favorite, was brought back after thought to being gone last winter, and stayed with the club during an early season shakeup when it seemed he was gone for sure. But I think the time has come. The market isn't strong for Pham. The only contender interested is the Dodgers, but the Dodgers are a wildcard contending team as well (so are the Padres for that matter), so its possible the Cardinals hang on to Pham.

The only other name that was mentioned was Jon Singleton. With Branden McKay all but ready for his shot in the big leagues, its possible the Cardinals look to move Singleton. But the Cardinals are also content on hanging on to Singleton through next Spring (if re-signed in winter) and have him and McKay compete for the everyday first base job.

The last name I'll mention will seem crazy, seeing as how they just acquired him, but Jon Lester could be shopped. There's a chance the Cardinals will package him with one of the other candidates to make him "more valuable". He has good stats this year, but after coming off a serious shoulder injury, and being 38, the market will be low for him. Even the Yankees who are in the hunt for the playoffs, waived him after he was activated from the IL.

The next 5 days should be interesting for the Cardinals. I doubt they buy anything at the deadline, but they could sell one, two, all, or none of the players listed above, although Tulo seems to be an almost certainty at this point given the Cards have Albies.

                            Stay tuned.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

                              Record: 32-23

Keeping up with their winning ways from the first portion of the season, the G-Men go 14-12 in the month of May, encapsulated by a game on the 5th against the Braves which finished 7-4. This win was headed by mostly Longoria and Shaw, who picks up 3 hits apiece and 5 RBI's between the duo were responsible for a large percentage of our offense.

Through 55 games the Giants are the top in the NL in BB, Fielding%, and Errors, with 151, .992, and 17 respectively. Belt, Posey, and Longoria have kept up their strong hitting throughout the month, with each player above 20 RBI, hitting above .300, and all have OBP above .350. Longoria especially has been impressive, with 41 RBI's in 55 games.

Draft Day is just a mere week away, and rumors from within the organization still suggest that the Giants will draft Mariano Perez at the 3 pick, but extra consideration has been given to Felipe Rivera, the shortstop out of California, and 2B Jed Santos, the 6'4 fielder from Southport HS.

The Giants sit atop the NL West, 3 and a half games ahead of the Dodgers.

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

Finally caught up with real life. Currently sitting July 6 with the Blue Jays and have a 35-26 record. After April, I was hovering around .500. A hot May saw me beat up on some tough and weak teams. Starting May, I was swept by Colorado, but now have a 2-0 series lead on the Yankees after a walk off by Gattis.

I made a few moves to shake up the roster. I acquired Ian Happ from Colorado for Pardinho, Tepera and Zeuch. The deal has worked out for both teams as Tepera hasn't allowed a run, while Happ has solidified himself at the two-spot in the lineup and has been a force. Looks like he may be a solid piece to build around.

Next, I traded Sanchez to SD for Naylor, Quantril and Nix. Sanchez has solidified the Padres rotation, while Quantril has jumped right into my starting rotation. Naylor has been decent in AAA and is expected to be called up at some point this year.

Signed Gattis to a 1-year deal to backup C and DH against LHP, which has been a great move for me. Losing Guerrero Jr. for two months was rough, but he should be back by the end of June.

Here is a look at the stats.

                                Lineup (AVG / HR / RBI /SB):
                                Ian Happ (RF) - .297, 8, 28, 0 (148 AB)

                                - If I keep playing well, I will probably hold pat and maybe even go after a solid bullpen piece. I may decide to continue with the rebuild and deal off Smoak, Richard, Buchholtz and Gattis. We will see what happens over the next 1-2 months!
