As the season went on it became pretty clear we weren't going to be doing much so I ended up simming the majority of the 2nd half. We fought hard but ultimately fell short as we finished the season at 81-81. We were 41-33 in the 2nd half and went 30-15 over the last 45 games. We finished 2nd in the Central and 6th overall in the AL as only 6 teams finished .500 or above. The Astros lead the Majors with 108 wins while the Reds topped the NL with 103. Seattle will have the first pick in next years draft after losing 102 games.
Standings
The offense was pretty damn similar to last year. We hit .253/.320/.421 (18th/20th/13th) with 689 Runs (14th), 269 Doubles (11th), 39 Triples (3rd), 194 Home Runs (11th), 124 Stolen Bases (T-6th), .667 Stolen Base % (T-13th), 521 Walks (22nd) and 1303 Strikeouts (14th). I did expect to be better but with the number of injuries we had even being as good as last year was a surprise.
After a terrible start to the season, Adalberto Mondesi bounced back and performed about as well as we expected. Had he not struggled through the first month his numbers would have looked a lot like his numbers the last couple seasons.
Ryan O'Hearn was our best player this season putting up 5.4 WAR and setting the team record for Home Runs with 40 while winning his first Silver Slugger. He is still pretty bad against lefties with only 4 of his Homers being hit off of them. But he hit .241 and isn't totally useless.
Jackie Bradley Jr was much like Modnesi. Struggled to start the season before turning it around. Unfortunately, that turn around happened after missing over a month which limited him to 120 games.
Khalil Lee made his MLB debut after JBJ went down and he filled in well. .274/.354/.409 with 10 HR and 15 Steals in 86 games. The first of our young prospect to come up and give us a glimpse of the future.
Whit Merrifield put up the highest OPS of his career. Unfortunately, it came in a season where he missed 2 months with an injury. Had he been healthy at the break we more than likely would have traded him for some prospects.
Salvy did about as well as we could expect. Missed over a month with an injury but still put up 18 HR while getting his OBP over .300 for the first time since 2013. He is a free agent and he wants to get paid. So he more than likely won't be here come next season.
Jorge Soler was pretty disappointing after putting up the best season of his career in 2020. He did hit 27 homers but hit just .238 with a .312 OBP. He is also a free agent this offseason and I have no idea what to do with him.
Most surprising player this year had to be Michael Gigliotti. After winning the LF spot during the spring he went on to hit 19 homers with good defense in left. It wasnt all pretty as his OBP was just .291. But I expect him to get better and at worst seems like he could be a good 4th OF.
Offensive Stats
The pitching was a major let down. We finished with a 4.20 ERA (21st), 1 Complete Game, 9 Shutouts (T-19th), 200 Home Runs Allowed (20th), 453 Walks (3rd) and 1159 Strikeouts (30th).
The only starters with an ERA under 4 were Foster Griffin and Jake Kalish. They combined to make just 10 starts. Jake Junis and Anthony Desclafani both had their worst seasons since 2018. Brad Keller started out good but fell off as the season went on. Still much better than his last couple years. Jorge Lopez went from trash to good and right back to trash. Before tearing his Rotator Cuff in September. Brady Singer made his MLB debut. Had his ups and downs but looked promising overall and then got hurt. Danny Duffy was. Less than good and most likely wont return next season. The bullpen was pretty good though. McCarthy, Warren and Skoglund all had ERAs under 3 with Kyle Zimmer and Zach McAllister under 4.

Salvy, Soler, Duffy and Anthony Desclafani are free agents while Zach McAllister has a team option. With Desclafani possibly leaving and the performance of the other starters that seems to be the biggest need in the offseason. But Salvy will most likely be gone as well and im not sure Viloria is ready to take over just yet. We are now in the window of when I expected to compete. Some of the pieces are here. Some are close. Time to start making win now moves.
