    FROM THE CARDINALS PERSPECTIVE

Cardinals shake things up after losing 4 straight

After returning home from what felt like a “breakthrough road trip”, the Cards immediately get swept by Milwaukee, then lose the first of 4 to the Rockies. Heading into the last week of August, and now sitting 9 games out of the Wildcard, which seems insurmountable, management decided to make a few changes and take one last stab at waking this team up! The moves are as follows:

    Gomber to Memphis
    Flaherty back to Cardinals

Flaherty actually started the year with the parent club, and was very spotty. Had some good starts, but got beat up a bunch too. Management had decided it was better for him to develop more at Memphis for awhile, rather than throwing him into the fire of this crazy league so soon, since they hope he will be a cornerstone of future staffs for years to come. He has responded well and been the ace of the staff almost all year in Memphis. ( Who are in first place by 2 games in the PCL north with a week to play)!

Every since spring training, it was hoped Gomber could be that left handed starter the Cards would like in the rotation. And he’s showed absolute dominance in a few games. But more often than not, the 5th inning has been his wall this year. So the thought now is he can go back and help the Memphis team he was doing so well with the first part of the season make a playoff run, and maybe get a better opportunity next season with the parent club!

Also the Cardinals made some notable lineup moves

Goldshmidt has went ice cold recently, so against RH pitching, Molina will be moved to 1st base and Weiters will catch. Pujols will play 3rd (which he’s done all year with some regularity, and Hornsby will go back to his natural 2nd base spot replacing Carpenter ( who just hasn’t got it going this year with any consistency). Also Hornsby will return to his cleanup spot in the order in hopes of waking his bat back up which has also went silent recently.

We shall see if any of this makes an impact, but the philosophy is, better to go out swinging than lying down!

Cards sweep Brewers in 4 game series

The Cardinals have started out July perfect, as they swept the Brewers in a 4 game series to start the month. The Cardinals are now 49-39 on the year and have climbed to within 6 games of the Pirates for the Central division lead and are tied with the Reds for the 2nd wildcard spot.

The Cardinals got both pitching and hitting to lead the charge in the sweep. Patrick Wisdom paced the offense with 5 homeruns and 11 RBI's in the series. Carlos Martinez and Jack Flaherty both had stellar starts going a combined 14 innings, allowing 3 earned runs, 7 hits, and striking out 17 between the two.

The Cardinals get a rare Friday off as they travel to Minnesota for a quick 2 game weekend series to close out the first half of the season, as the All-Star game is Tuesday.

Can they keep the streak going?

Cardinals will activate Michael Wacha during All Star Break

The Cardinals will activate Michael Wacha over the All-Star Break. Wacha will start for the first time since April on July 15th against the Cubs. Miles Mikolas is expected to be optioned to Memphis when Wacha is activated.

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

So as with many years before I’ve started and abandoned a few franchises due to patches, difficulty level, boredom, etc. I drafted a new Fantasy team with the Texas Rangers right after the last patch dropped. I adjusted my hitting up from HOF to HOF+. Pitching remains on Legend. Only sliders I’ve touched were +1 for power for both Human and CPU. I’ve played the game like crazy since then and have already played 1/3 of the season, 54 games in. We’ve ridden a couple of huge hot streaks with only a few cold ones to the best record in baseball to this point(39-15). Started 20-5, then we went 9-10 and now we are in the midst of a 10 game win streak. We’ve had some blowouts, some tight come from behind games and everything in between. Here’s the current standings:

        Image1558919334.006394.jpg

One wild game that we won during the current winning streak was a game in LA vs the Angels. We trailed 3-2 in the 9th. Devenski was in to close it out. 2 outs and nobody on. I pinch hit with Matt Olson(day off) hoping he can run into
one. I work a walk(something I’m not great at/30th in MLB). Pederson strikes out on a ball in the dirt, it’s gets away and he reaches. 2 on, 2 out. Eduardo Escobar, who we acquired from the Yankees after they offered him to us for
Christian Vazquez when they needed a catcher, hits a 3 run bomb to right center. We tack on 2 more runs, Angels score two in the bottom half and we hold on 7-5 for the win. I don’t think I’ve ever won a game reaching with 2 outs on a strikeout/wild pitch. Wild stuff. Player updates coming next

          2019 Texas Rangers Fantasy Franchise

One thing about drafting your team is that you can load up on guys that A) you play very well with and play to your strengths as a user and B) that the CPU sleeps on in the draft for whatever reason. We had the #1 overall pick and went with Mike Trout of course. From there we loaded up with a ton of power bats, offense is absolutely stacked. Somehow our pitching has been dominant even though we took most of our starters in later rounds(veterans Darvish, Morton and Archer all were drafted after the 10th round).

          Typical starting lineup:

          Mondesi (SS)
          Trout(CF)
          Carpenter(3B)
          Cruz(DH)
          Olson(1B)
          Springer(RF)
          Pederson(LF)
          Phegley(C)
          Escobar(2B)

We started the year trying out rookie SS Richie Martin at 2B. We liked his glove and his speed, but he couldn’t hit at all. With our offense that’s not too big of a deal since we have plenty of firepower, however we were in the midst of our biggest slump of the year when the Yankees offered us Escobar for Vazquez and we jumped on it. Escobar had big numbers at DH, but the Yanks were loaded at His main position of 3B with Moustakas and Franco. He’s been good for us and we’ve used him at both the leadoff spot and 9 hole.

We’ve had so many monsterous offensive performances so far it’s hard to highlight them all. A few surprises so far is that leading our team and MLB in HR(22) and RBI(53) is Matt Carpenter. George Springer is 2nd in the AL in hitting(.353) to go along with 18 and 40. He was a steal in the draft as many team passed on him. His defense has been subpar, but he’s been an elite hitter at the dish and still hits 6th in this deep lineup. Mike Trout of course has done everything well. He leads the league in runs scored(50) and he’s top 10 in a number of others as well as being 1st overall in WAR. His HR numbers are lower than expected with just 11 so far(6th on my team), we’ll see how that goes. Joc Pederson started off very slow and he’s been one of the hottest hitters in the league lately getting his average up to .282 and amassing 17 HR and 38 RBI. Mondesi hasn’t hit too much, but he’s a menace on the base paths leading the league with 24 SB.

I’ve only hit 3 HR in a game with one player this year in the Show(we’ll over 100 total games played). That player is Joc Pederson and all he did was go 4 for 4 with 4 solo HR! One of the few times I’ve ever hit 4 HR in a game in the Show ever! It was a tight game too in Anaheim and we won 6-5:

          IMG_1122.JPG

Pitchers up next and we’ll be up to date.

Man....I’ve had nothing to do today but grind my season all day long! 5 straight losses after starting the day feeling gung ho lol! Frustrating losses too! Balls hit hard but right at people, costly errors, bad calls by the ump and a couple mixed in user errors with the controller! 🤪 The last moves I made seemed to have the desired effects, was winning late. Great start by Reyes and plenty of offense, but my very tired bullpen couldn’t quite hang on (but did great), and left the tying run on 3rd in the 9th! Ugh! Think I’ll try once more to break the funk, but know I should probably hang it up for the night lol

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

Pitching has been great for us so far. We are currently tied for 1st in MLB in ERA(3.32) with the Rockies of all teams. We give up the least free passes in the league, but we rank dead last in Ks which is frustrating. On paper coming into the year I though we had a decent rotation of our veterans could perform and a strong bullpen. Well we’ve had a very strong rotation with a pretty shaky bullpen. We carry 7 relievers and I’d say 3-4 have performed well. Here’s what our staff looks like:

              Starters:

              Strahm(4-5, 3.49 ERA, 69.2 IP, 65 K)
              Morton(7-0, 2.66 ERA, 74.1 IP, 59 K)
              Archer(4-3, 3.62 ERA, 82.0 IP, 56 K)
              Darvish(6-1, 2.41 ERA, 78.1 IP, 58 K)
              Minor(8-1, 2.98 ERA, 66.1 IP, 39 K)

              Our best relievers have been Stanek(2-0, 2.43 ERA, 29.2 IP, 20 K, 2 SV) Buchter(1-1, 2.45 ERA, 14.2 IP, 14 K. 1 SV) and our closer Jeffress(15/18 SV, 3.04 ERA, 23.2 IP, 20 K)

Herrera, Baez, Cody Allen and even Tyler Lyons have not been great so far.

Hopefully we will continue to get great starting pitching as the year goes on and that some of the guys in the pen can play a little closer to the back of the mid baseball cards going forward.

DeGrom is on the Twins and has been filthy. He’s 7-1, 1.84 ERA, 83.1 IP, 84 K and has 3 CG SHO already. He leads in Cy Young voting.

In the NL, closer Ryan Pressly is 22/22 saves. He’s pitched 21.0 IP and has given up ZERO runs with a 0.57 WHIP. That’s nasty.

You and me both. I’ve lost three straight and I might as well go ahead and chalk up five in a row. I have Quintana pitching next and his super stellar 6.31 ERA against the 48-20 Dodgers in Los Angeles and then I face Clayton Kershaw after that. I’m sitting at 37-31 and still up 2.0 games in the NL Central but man, I’m sucking.

I’m so streaky in this year’s game. Lose 5 straight, win six straight, lose three, win four....

Cards lose both games to Twins due to bullpen failures

The Cardinals will head into the All-Star Break on a two game losing streak after dropping both games in Minnesota to the Twins. Both games the Cardinals led late only to have the bullpen blow it. Game 1 was Andrew Miller collapsing and Game 2 was Trevor Rosenthal's turn.

The Cardinals will end the first half of the season 7 1/2 games behind the Pirates in the Central and 2 1/2 behind the Reds for the 2nd wildcard spot.

When the season resumes on Friday, the Cardinals will host the Brewers for a 3 game weekend series.

                  July schedule:

                  VS MIL (3 GAMES)
                  VS CHC (3 GAMES)
                  VS LAD (3 GAMES)
                  @ SD (3 GAMES)
                  @ CIN (3 GAMES)
                  @ PIT (3 GAMES)

Cardinals have an opportunity by the end of the month to get themselves back into the mix of things heading to August.

The Jays played a few games above .500 ball for the first half of the season. The bullpen troubles were fixed, but the rotation took a bit of a dive. Bumgarner was a great addition as he kept the rotation and bullpen afloat by consistently going deep in games while most of the rotation struggled. Overall, the Jays picked up in August and Septemeber. Through 106 games the Jays were 55-51, they finished the regular season 89-73. With 12 games left in the season the Jays were tied for the 2nd WC spot with the A'a and Rays. 6 games left vs TB, and a 3 game set VS Oak. Jays were 6-3 in those games and clinched the WC spot by one game. What a turnaround!

The Jays made a mid-season decision to call up top prospect Nate Pearson, who performed well for the Jays in 13 starts for the Jays (5-6, 3.76)

Bumgarner was the ace we needed (15-10, 3.23, 247IP)
Stro and Sanchez both hovered right at a 4 ERA (3.95, 4.12)

The pen was great as the Jays had 4 BP arms with a sub 2.5ERA

Vlad continues to be among the best hitters in baseball (.351, 29 HRS, 101RBI) and was snubbed of an AS appearance.

Bo Bichette had a big year 2 despite only playing 107 because of a broken ankle (.295, .356OBP, 10HR, 44RBI). Both look to be part of the core.

                    Zobrist was a great offseason addition as a leadoff hitter (.306, .386OBP, 9HR, 59RBI)

                    Teoscar had a huge bounceback after an abysmal 2019 (.267AVG, 27HR, 90RBI)

Gyorko came down to earth and Tellez was horrible. Prompting the Jays to make a trade deadline acquisition of Jose Abreu from the last place White Sox. Unfortunately 30 games into his Jays career he tore his ACL diving for a ball. He is still under contract for 2021 and looks to be the Jays opening day 1B.

Overall the lineup did really well and outside of Gyorko and Jansen nobody was horrible. Drury put together another awesome utility role slash of (.282AVG, 15HR, 62RBI).

The Jays will take on the Red Sox in the one game WC playoff. Bumgarner Vs Chris Sale. The opening day matchup. I will update soon!

Mike Lowe Sliders, play first 5 games of season, the one game a series. Love it!
2020 Jays Postseason: After the Jays surprised the league by making a wild card spot they had to take on the 2x defending champ Red Sox.

Jays had a 3-0 lead early. Bumgarner was cruising throwing 5 scoreless innings. The 6th inning the Sox put up a 3 spot and tied the ballgame.

The Jays would come through in the 9th with an RBI single by Vlad Jr and shut the door in the bottom half to advance to the ALDS vs CLE.

The 113-49 Indians were scary looking. The Jays offense was riding high though, as they SWEPT the Indians. 10-7, 8-5, 9-3. Game 1 saw the Jays down 7-1 and they roared back against Kluber and won.

Next up was the Houston Astros for the right to represent the AL in the World Series. What a series it was.

Jays offense kept rolling game one with a 9-6 victory. Game two Whitley cruised and shut the Jays down in a 5-1 defeat.

Francis Martes picked up right after and shut the Jays down in game 3. No offense again in a 4-1 defeat despite 10 hits.

Game 4 saw the Jays with an early 4-2 lead through 3 innings. The Astros would tie it all up 5-5 in the 6th. The Jays would put a run up in the 8th and Cody Allen closed the game for the Jays to even up the series at 2 games a piece.

Verlander was roughed up early in game 5, giving up 5R in 5 innings and 10 hits. Aaron Sanchez tossed 6IP and 3ER to a 6-4 victory for the Jays. 3-2 series lead.

Astros needed a big start from Brad Peacock in game 6 and got it. He tossed 5.2IP of scoreless ball, and the rest of the bullpen completed the shutout. Astors win game 6 3-0.

Game 7. For a trip to the World Series vs the Cubs. Whitley Vs Bumgarner.

Jays jumped out in front scoring a run an inning in the 2nd-5th. Taking a 4-0 commanding lead. Bumgarner was dialing up a great game. Then the 5th inning came. Astros came alive and put up a 7 spot. Jays could not stop the tear. 8-4 Astros after 6.

Jays would not give up. Lucroy hit a leadoff HR in the 7th. Then Vlad Jr hit a massive 3rHR to tie up the game. 8-8.

Bottom 9. Runners at first and second 2 outs. Yan Gomes up for the Astros. Hits a towering 3R walkoff blast to take the Astros to the World Series. Heartbreak for Toronto.

MVP: Gyorko. Amazing. I have never hit this well with someone in a postseason.

                    43ABS, .488AVG, 7HR, 16RBI.

What a season. Passed expectations and could not have asked for more from this Jays team. Lets see what will happen in the offseason.

National League tops American League 3-1 in All Star Game

The National League got solo homeruns from Javy Guerra and Trevor Story and a sac fly from Buster Posey, as they defeated the American League 3-1 in the mid-Summer Classic in Oakland. The American League's lone run was scored on a solo shot from Aaron Judge.

The game was very much a pitcher's duel as the two teams combined for 26 strikeouts (12 NL & 14 AL), and allowed a combined 9 hits. The game also featured 6 combined double plays.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

                          2019 Texas Rangers Fantasy Franchise

6/10: Just when you start thinking you’re getting too good at this game you run into a a few game streak where you just can’t seem to do anything against your opponent and get humbled real quick. We just finished our 10 game Homestand at 5-5. We won the opener to bring our win streak to 11 straight. Lost game 2 and then ran off 4 straight wins on our way to another successful stand. Then the wheels fell off as we forgot how to hit and started getting hit all over the place. We dropped 4 straight including getting swept by second place Oakland in the final 3 games of the Homestand. They outscored is 18-9 and we just didn’t play very well combined with some bad luck at the dish(lots of squared up balls resulting in line outs and warning track shots).

We are 6 days into 20 straight days of baseball without a day off. We now head to Boston for 4 and then Cincy for 3 before coming back home for another 7 games. Weirdly enough Boston is tied for first in the East and they are 3 games below .500. The National League East doesn’t have a team with a winning record either. Very odd. The Reds are a 1st place team as well with the 2nd best record in MLB after us so we have a tough road trip coming up.

Matt Carpenter continues his ridiculous tear hitting 6 HR in the last 10 games. His season totals are up to .319, 28 HR, 66 RBI, .721 SLG!!

Jeffress was 5/5 in save opportunities saving all 5 of our wins while not allowing a run. He now has 20 saves on the year.

I sit at 67-48 nine days into August for my 2025 Cubs. I have dropped the first 2 of a 4 game set vs now second place St. Louis. They are 59-56 so it is still a pretty commanding division lead.

Harper continues what should be an MVP season with a .329 ave 41 Hrs and 115 Rbis. Still slugging over .740. Kris Bryant has also upped his HR pace a bit and currently is hitting .284 with 39 Hrs and 95 Rbis. Morgan Duran has upped his ave to .265 and has 33 Hrs with 94 Rbis. Also, with his 32 Steals he has reached a 30/30 season for the 5th time in his career. I'm thinking that he may get his first 40/40 year.

Kinda as a uniform note, I have decided to make the 1980's Striped unis my official home look and at this point I'm about 95%+ certain I will make the corresponding Blue over white 80's away my road look for 2026. I loved these as a kid and the last time the Cubs wore them full time was 1989. The 1989 cubs to this day are still my all-time favorite cub team even over the 2016 world series team.

I'm in the 2018 season with rosters from last year. My Stros just took out the wild card winning Mariners 3 games to 1 after losing the first game with Verlander. The bats woke up in the next 3 games and we took them down. Now we sit 1 - 0 in the ALCS after Verlander pitched 8 and a third innings of shutout baseball against the Indians who took out the Red Sox in the divisional series. The NL saw the Dodgers sweep the Brewers and the Nats handle the Diamondbacks in 5 games. The Dodgers are up on 1 to 0 on the Nats so far.

I'm still playing on 17 and I have to say that I've found a sweet spot on the game that most people don't seem to have on 19 yet. I hope y'all find it, but 17 is blowing me away. Btw this is my first MLBTS game ever.
