THE PITCHING BATTLE CONTINUES


Even the number 5 starters for these teams show dominance over each other’s offenses! Quintana and Urias both looked as razor sharp as any pitcher this post season. Only 1 run would be scored in the entire game for the second time this series! This time it would be the Cubs that squeak out the victory however on a solo shot from Kris Bryant!

Sutter would notch his 4th save of the postseason as the Cubs would go on to win Game 5, 1-0, giving them a 3-2 series lead! One win away from clinching a spot in the World Series! They’ll have to find a way to do it on the road though as the series now shifts back to LA for the last 2 games! This has certainly been a worthy Championship matchup as every game so far has been decided by a single run.

Seattle Mariners Franchise: Year One


2019 DRAFT ANALYSIS:

The 2019 MLB draft has come and gone. It will be sometime before we know if these prospects are future all-stars or will ever step foot on an MLB roster. Today we'll give a run down on each of the Mariners prospects from the 2019 draft class.

Draft Rating: C+

Rnd 1:
Victor Perez, 1B (19 yrs/Texas) Perez has probably has the most upside of any of the Mariners picks. His fielding ability is unmatched he could man the firstbase corner in the majors right now. At the plate though his bat lacks pop and the ability to make contact needed at a MLB level.

Rnd 2:
Israel Feliciano, RP (20 yrs/Puerto Rico) The Mariners second pick throws a 96mph fastball and excels at strikeouts and his curveball has a wicked break to it. Felicianos' weakness comes in his pitch control where he is prone missing over the heart of the plate and giving up homeruns.

Rnd 3:
Victor Pino, RP (18 yrs/ New York) While Pino lacks the strikeout ability of Feliciano, Pino is a reliver that excels in keep guys off the bases something the Mariners current relievers have problems with. Pino is only 18 though so realistically it will be sometime before the NY native is ready to ply his trade in the majors.

Rnd 4:
Hugo Goto, SS (19 yrs/Japan) The switch hitting Goto could probably come off the bench for half the teams in the MLB. With his speed, fielding ability and patience at the plate you'd think he would have been snatched up much earlier. The downside to Goto is he's very injury prone. If he can overcome his durability issues he could become the steal of the draft.

Rnd 5:
Johnnie Bush, SP (18 yrs./Jamaica) Not much can be said about the man from Jamaica. Bush doesn't really standout at any particular area. While he could develop into a decent rotation starter his future could see him being at LRP and coming into a starting rotation if injuries were to arise.

Rnd 6:
Moses Valenzuela, SP (18 yrs/Dominican Republic) The Right hander from the DR like the Mariners 5th pick doesn't excel in any particular area. Where Valenzuela does make his mark is his ability to make it deep into the later innings of games. He never seems to get tired even when the pitch count rises.

Cardinals send Paul DeJong to Houston for prospects

The Cardinals and Astros agreed to a trade at the end of spring training that will send Paul DeJong to Houston for prospects. The 29 year old DeJong was slated to start the year in Memphis after Greg Garcia and Yairo Munoz beat hi out for the backup infield positions. DeJong will likely be the everyday shortstop in Houston who ran thru a plethora of youngsters during the spring without really finding an everyday player.

The Cardinals thought at one time that DeJong would be the everyday shortstop for a long time in St.Louis, but it just never panned out. The Cardinals used Tulowitzki last year and have Ozzie Albies locked up for the next 4 years.

Yankees claim Andrew Miller off waivers

The Yankees have claimed 37 year old Andrew Miller off waivers, bring him back to the Bronx. Miller will join the likes of Dellin Betances, Jack McGee, Sean Gilmartin, and Sean Doolittle in the bullpen as the Yankees try to shore up a big weakness with last year's club. The Yankees are looking to end their 7 year drought from the playoffs.

Indians send Mike Trout to IL with leg fracture

The Indians have placed superstar Mike Trout on the 10 Day IL with a leg fracture. The injury is expected to keep Trout out of the lineup for 2-3 weeks. Trout is looking to repeat his 2022 success in Cleveland where he hit .312 with 36 homeruns and drove in 115 RBI's. Trout is in year 3 of a 9 year deal that he signed Cleveland during the 2021 offseason.

WE HAVE LIFTOFF


Boston being down 3 games to 1 in the series and on the brink of elimination, did not enter the game completely out of hope. Because of the fact they had to play a wildcard game against Oakland to begin the playoffs, which their ace Sale started. Followed by a full 5 game series against the Yankees in which Sale started game 5, positioned it to where he was now the Game 5 starter here. But Houston was well aware of this obviously, and kept their own secret weapon in their pocket to counter. Justin Verlander, who went 17-5 with a 3.10 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP during the regular season!

Similar to Game 5 against the Yankees, Sale stumbled a little coming out of the gates in the 1st inning, hitting Altuve with a pitch, but then striking Jackson out. Then Altuve would steal 2nd.

Bagwell then singled to center moving Altuve to 3rd putting men on first and third with 1 out.

Correa would then drive a ball to deep right center that bounced over the wall for a ground rule double, scoring Altuve and putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.

After striking Bregman out, Sale would throw out in the dirt that got by Chirinos to the backstop allowing Bagwell to score and Correa to move to 3rd!

Fenway was immediately silenced as everyone could surely sense what they’ve been experiencing all week, that this just may be the end.

Regardless Sale would settle down and keep the score there and the Sox in the game till the 6th inning. But Verlander was not as generous, throwing a no hitter through 7 innings!

Sale would leave the game in the 6th inning with the bases loaded and 2 out, handing the ball to Carson Smith.

Smith would get Altuve to fly out and end the inning!

The Astros widened the lead in the top of the 7th to 5-0, with a base clearing 2 run triple to Center by Correa, followed immediately by a ground rule double to right by Springer scoring Correa!

Verlander’s no-hit bid was finally ended in the bottom of the 7th when Damon went oppo against the shift to the left field corner for a double. Betts would also get on but Boston would score no runs.

Houston added another run in the 8th when Altuve scored from second on a Jackson single to center.

Verlander would finally be removed before registering an out in the 9th, after Foxx worked a walk and Martinez singled to center putting runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs. Boston would manage to scrape 1 run across but it was too little too late! Houston wins the game 6-1, and the series 4-1!

Houston has secured their spot in the World Series by cruising through this insanely talented AL bracket with little resistance! They are definitely playing superior baseball right now, and few would disagree with the fact that the best team won! Congratulations Houston! Now to find out who they will be facing from the Cubs /Dodgers series!

ONE SEAT LEFT AT THE TABLE


Game 6 would be a rematch of aces from Game 1, Hershiser vs Prior, which took 10 innings to finally get a 1-0 winner. Prior only allowed 1 hit in that game and it came with 2 outs in the ninth! And didn’t get a win! That’s been the theme of this series since! Lights out pitching!

The Cubs offense would start much earlier in this one, as Sandberg led the game off with a single. Then stole 2nd.

Bryant struck out. Then Sandberg took 3rd on a wild pitch.

Hershiser would then strike Williams out. But Banks would again come through when it mattered and single to center scoring Sandberg.

Sanchez would then single to right but Haniger would strikeout to end the inning holding Chicago to only 1 run.

Then both teams would return to hanging zeros until the top of the 5th.

Descalso would start the 5th with a single to left, followed by Sandberg smashing a double into the gap in right center, moving Descalso to 3rd!

Then Hershiser would throw another one in the dirt that got past Piazza and Descalso would score plus Sandberg moved up to 3rd with still no outs.

Bryant would then ground out to Robinson on the right side scoring Sandberg. After a couple more singles by Banks and Sanchez, Rich Hill would come in for Hershiser and finish the inning without allowing anymore runs. 3-0 Cubs

Twice the Dodgers left the bases loaded on offense without getting a single run in the middle innings.

Bottom of the 9th would still be 3-0 Cubs, and they of course turn to Sutter to attempt to get his 5th save of the postseason and send them to the World Series.

Sutter struck out Bellinger on a nasty splitter, then got Freese to pop out right back to the mound. Then Sutter struck out Robinson on another filthy splitter! Cubs win and are headed to the World Series to face off with a red hot Houston team!

The Giant's nosedive has continued throughout August with the Bombers finishing with a horrendous 6-21 record. Newly-acquired Giants pitcher Martin Perez has been struggling since his acquisition, posting a 4.20 ERA on the season, a big jump from his low-3's ERA from his time in Texas. On the flipside, however, the other pitcher acquired from the G-Men's moves at the deadline in Yu Darvish has been surprisingly great in his current stint, going 2-3 with a measly sub-2 ERA for his games in San Fran. Top prospect Kevin Kramer, acquired from the Pirates has also struggled at the plate but has posted strong 2B defense.

Ahead of September callups, the Giants have added pitchers Andrew Suarez, Derek Holland, Shaun Anderson, Reyes Moronta, Catcher Aramis Garcia, and Center Fielder Victor Victor Mesa to their 40 man.

Mesa was acquired in a prospect swap which sent pitcher Luis Medina to the Marlins for the 21 year old center fielder.

THE ULTIMATE PRIZE

Here we are! Finally near the end of this historic inaugural season of baseball like the world has never seen! 2 teams have emerged from the field of battle and now prepare for one last “winner takes all” fight to the death!

Way back in April when this journey began there were countless questions and a world of uncertainty. Slowly the questions would be answered as the calendar relentlessly moved forward.

There was little disagreement that certain franchises would begin their journey with a definite advantage, either because of the sheer length of history and pool of potential players that would report, or the market the franchises played in or in some cases a combination of both location and history. These were teams of course like (The Yankees, Redsox, Dodgers, Giants, Cubs and Braves). Early significant injuries would have a huge impact on some of those quickly falling from the top of that ladder.

The Giants in particular were hit hard by the injury bug, losing Mays early for a huge chunk of time, along with other big names like McCovey, Irvin and more for smaller periods but were consistently missing multiple pieces.

To a lesser degree the Redsox dealt with significant injuries as well like losing Williams for a spell.

Others in that group of expected favorites dealt with a lopsided pool of All-Star/ HOF players. Too many at certain positions, but obviously lacking in others. Teams like the Cubs who were loaded with Pitching but scrambled to figure out their outfield. Or the Braves having HOF position players on the bench, but mediocre starting pitchers even by normal modern day standards. The Giants had that same exact issue along with the injuries. All and all the Giants did well to even make the playoffs considering what they had to navigate, let alone do as well as they did. The same could be said for the Cubs. They struggled to keep pace with the Cardinals in the Central early, but by June seemed to have it figured out as they steadily climbed further and further out in front and never really came close to surrendering first in the division.

But of that initial list of “favorites “, 2 teams really capitalized and surfaced as monsters! The Yankees and Dodgers. Both dominated their divisions with no real resistance all year. At one point the Dodgers tied the all time record for consecutive wins.

There were surprise franchises as well. None bigger than the Nationals/ Expos. A team with far less history than most to draw from, but happened to draw seemingly the perfect collection of players to accent the modern day talent already in place. Their pitching staff was already solid, Sherzer, Strasburg, Corbin, Doolittle to name a few, but now had Gary Carter behind the dish. Same with their infield of Adams at 1st, Dozier at 2nd, Rendon at 3rd and Turner at SS! But they would also add arguably the best outfield trio in the league with Vlad in LF, Andre Dawson in CF and Rookie Harper in RF! That’s a complete lineup there that contributed to the Braves struggles and made it hard on Philadelphia to gain ground.

Then there’s Houston. Similar to Washington their history is short, and had very few legends report. But their foundation of modern day players is formidable! And I believe if you could upgrade one position on their modern day team, hands down it would be 1st base. Enter Jeff Bagwell, their lone position legend to report. But they also beefed up their rotation and bullpen with top notch legends. However they too would have to navigate the injury bug all year as well, losing Michael Brantley right away for the season, then constant other injuries, seemingly always down multiple outfielders. The front office played smart though, never panicking and selling their future, which is in better shape than most in this league. They utilized their farm players, and ultimately when they did finally make a move, they were smart about it and didn’t reach for the moon, but rather filled a need adequately for reasonable compensation. Most notably the acquisition of Jackson to play CF.

At the end of the day, there were 3 teams that emerged as odds on favorites early in the season in my personal opinion. The Yankees and Dodgers as previously mentioned. The other being the Indians!

The Indians had to put in a little work making trades, spending money, and taking chances a little gambling with their future, but they seemed to make all the right moves. Adding Shawn Green and Nick Markakis to the outfield with Doby and Lofton. Santana at 1st, Lindor playing 2nd because Vizquel of course has dibs on SS, and Ramirez at 3rd. Cliff Lee won the AL Cy Young, Doby won AL MVP, Ramirez and Lofton both battled all year for the batting title. Brad Hand was reliever of year, long relief like Blylevyn. The only position you could criticize was catcher, and that almost seemed irrelevant. It was shocking to see this team get completely smashed by Houston in the divisional round!

All 3 of those mentioned “favorites“ teams did make the playoffs but none made it to the World Series. But that’s a testament to the competition in this league. Any team that played well enough to make the final 10 cut that is the playoffs, is capable of winning games no matter who the opponent is.

Can’t wait to see which of these 2 teams claims the ultimate prize! Equally excited to see how the offseason plays out and begin figuring how next season is gonna look.

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE “1st EVER”


One look at the batting averages on the Chicago Cubs lineup card and it’s obvious how they managed to earn a spot in this World Series! Masterful pitching and solid defense! It surely wasn’t the offense carrying them lol. But while Chicago has arguably the best complete staff in baseball right now, Houston has claim to arguably the best ( definitely the hottest), single pitcher in the game at the moment in Mike Scott, who would take the mound in game 1 against Kyle Hendricks. Scott has been almost untouchable in his previous 2 starts this postseason. Both pitchers are 2-0 having won both their previous starts. Another stat worth noting is both teams have dominated at home this postseason. Houston has not lost at home going 4-0 to this point, and Chicago has only dropped one going 4-1 so far.

As advertised both pitchers would start the game hanging zeros! The Cubs would strike first in the bottom of the 3rd with a solo shot to center surprisingly by Ian Happ, who has been almost completely non existent on offense this entire postseason to this point. Cubs up 1-0!

Top of the 4th the Astros would respond. Jackson lead off with a single then reached 2nd on a wild pitch.

Bagwell hit a hard ground ball in the hole between Descalso and Sandberg for what appeared to be a sure hit, but Sandberg made an incredible diving catch and threw him out from his knees. Meanwhile Jackson moved over to 3rd.

Correa would then ground out to Banks at short but Jackson’s immediate break for home allowed him to score easily, tying the game back up at 1-1. That’s how it would stay heading to the 7th.

With 1 out in the top of the 7th Bregman would smash a double to center marking the end of Hendricks evening as the Cubs brought in Cishek.

Cishek would get Springer to chase an inside slider striking out for the 2nd out of the inning. Then Reddick would get a ground ball single up the middle scoring Bregman on a close play at the plate. Astros go up 2-1, then Cishek would strike out Chirinos on a slider to end the frame.

Bottom half of the next inning with Devenski now pitching for Houston, Happ would strike again leading off the eighth with a double to left.

Heyward would follow with a ground ball up the middle that Altuve had to go a long way to get but Heyward would beat out the throw for an infield single moving Happ to 3rd with no outs.

Then Descalso would hit a ball very hard on the ground to Bagwell at 1st freezing Happ at 3rd, but the slight hesitation of Bagwell looking him back cost Houston the second out of a would be DP. Still 1st and 3rd with 1 out now. Next Sandberg lined a single into left scoring Happ to tie it back up at 2-2 and moving Descalso to 2nd.

Devenski then got Bryant to strike out chasing a slider, but Williams would work a walk. Bases loaded with 2 outs for Banks

But this time Banks would get harmlessly underneath one and pop out straight back to the catcher Leon. Inning over still tied 2-2 headed to the 9th.

Moving ahead to the bottom of the 11th inning with Peacock on the mound for Houston, Williams would lead off with a weak blooper to left that fell for a single.

Then Banks would do it again, blasting a 2 run walk off blast to left! Cubs win 4-2 and take the early 1-0 series lead!

2019 Texas Rangers Fantasy Franchise

Sep 29 End of Reg Season Update: The last few weeks have been busy as hell for me with my work schedule and then I was away for a few days for the 4th. Haven’t updated in a while, but I managed to finish out the reg season and start the playoffs. We actually played poorly down the stretch, losing the last 4 games of the year to be stuck at 99 wins on the year(still best in MLB). Luckily the LAA lost a few and we were able to clinch the division with a few games to go.

We had a number of massive offensive performances this year having the highest scoring team in the league. If I had voted for MVP, I would have given it to Trout who I feel had the better overall season, but those who voted gave the slight edge to Matt Carpenter. Finishing 3rd behind them was their own teammate Joc Pederson. Here’s each players #’s for the year(AL RANK):

Matt Carpenter- .289 Avg(19th), 62 HR(2nd), 142 RBI(2nd), 114 Runs(4th), 45 2B(2nd), .667 SLG(2nd), 1.006 OPS(4th), 5.6 WAR(12th), Silver Slugger 3B, 153 Games played, Player of the Month for May(.321, 15 HR, 31 RBI)

Mike Trout- .339 Avg(2nd), 53 HR(4th), 144 RBI(1st), 144 Runs(1st), 44 2B(t-4th), 51 SB(2nd), .384 OBP(7th), .651 SLG(4th), 1.035 OPS(3rd), 12.0 WAR(1st), 225 Hits(1st), 1st 50/50 club member in MLB history, 46-Game hit streak(snapped on Sep 28/Game 161), Played 160 games, Silver Slugger OF, 3rd in Hank Aaron Award voting, 1 error all year(.998 field %), Player of the Month for July(.350, 9 HR, 23 RBI)

Joc Pederson- .303 Avg(10th), 66 HR(1st), 123 RBI(4th), 97 Runs(t-11th), 44 2B(t-4th), .786 SLG(1st), 1.126 OPS(1st), 7.1 WAR(5th), 139 games played, well over 100 less ABs on the year than the other two(505 AB), 7.7 AB/HR, Silver Slugger OF, Hank Aaron Award winner, 2 separate 4-HR games, Player of the Month for August(.391, 16 HR, 28 RBI)


As you can see all 3 had massive years. Looking back I feel I should have gotten Pederson more opportunities and he would have broke Bond’s HR record. I stand by my vote for Trout for having the more all-around dominant season both offensively and defensively, but congrats to Matt Carpenter who had a ton of clutch HR for us a drove in a ton of runs.

As a team we led the league in Runs scores with 904 and shattered the HR record with 383. As you can see I score most of my runs via the long ball, but our overall runs scored is still in line with a big time MLB offense in real life as there is currently 3 teams on pace to outscore us this year.

We ended the year with a team ERA of 3.97, tied for 17th in MLB. Stanek was great for us when we moved him into the closer role and Acquiring Verlander at the trade deadline was def a big boost and he will hopefully win the arm to help carry us through the postseason.

Other honorable mentions for reg season were Verlander finishing 2nd overall in AL Cy Young voting behind Robbie Ray(KC). Stanton(CR) edges out real life teammate Judge(MIA) for NL MVP. Kershaw(SF) wins the CY Young by a landslide(21-7, 1.83 ERA, 256 K, 7 SHO!!) Ryan Pressly(SF) wins reliever of the year for NL saving 45/47 chances with a 0.58 ERA for the year! Votto edges out Justin Turner for the NL batting title. JD Martinez took the AL batting title over Trout and Osuna won reliever of the year for the AL with a perfect 48/48 saves and 1.32 ERA.

Also for us, Alberto Mondesi led MLB in SB with 75!

MountUrCastle's San Francisco Giants Rebuild
season 1 finale

After having an abysmal August the Bay Bombers fought their way through September, never logging a losing streak longer than 3 games which is impressive given their nosedive last month. The Giants closed the 2018 MLB season with a 77-85 which placed them 18th in the league overall, giving them the 12th overall pick in next years draft.

Yu Darvish continued his impressive run finishing the season with a 2.84 ERA, giving him far and away the pitching lead for our team- the next closest pitcher being Jeff Samardzija with a 3.56 ERA across the whole season, while Buster Posey lead the offense with a .301 batting average and absolutely fantastic stats all across the board. Prospects Kevin Kramer and V.V Mesa also impressed in their time with the Giants- while not posting any spectacular stats they remained great defenders with respectable batting averages.

The 2019 world series goes to the Phillies, who managed to beat the Red Sox in 7 games. Directly after the final game, Pablo Sandoval announced his retirement from the MLB, with the Giants farm director following suit.

In exclusive free agency, the Giants resigned:
-Martin Perez 2 yrs 5.4 per
-Gregor Blanco 1 yr 1.8 per

Bryan Atcho to be their Hitting Coach for 3 years


With the Giants in rebuild mode, many rumors circle around Posey's tenure as a Giant. While his big money contract may be difficult to move, there are some rumblings about a 3, possibly even 4 team deal in a Posey move. The rumored final ask for Posey is upwards of 4 top prospects.
