MLB THE SHOW 17 - 2017 SEASON - SPRING TRAINING - GAME 2 vs CLE

CIN SP Matt Belisle (0-0) vs CLE SP Corey Kluber (0-0)

With Kluber pitching for CLE, RED'S newly acquired LF Andrew Benintendi leading off, klubbed one to deep right field, clearing the wall and giving the REDS a quick 1-0 lead.

Kluber settles down and pitches three scoreless innings, REDS get a couple hard hit balls, but nothing to show for it on the scoreboard.

RED'S SP Matt Belisle pitches three innings, there was a couple of times he found himself having to get out of a few instances with baserunners in scoring position. He managed to do so, and did not allow any runs in his first start in years.

RED'S rookie sensation SP Robert Stephenson (remember it is 2017) comes in to pitch scoreless 4th, 5th and 6th inning. Stephenson who was the RED'S 1st Round draft pick in 2011, straight out of high school is looking to make his case in joining the starting rotation. Manager Bryan Price said, "he made a strong case in being a starter today' but Spring Training is just started."

Top of the 7th inning, power hitter Billy Hamilton, (POWER HITTER?), YEP! At least for today. Punished a fastball from CLE's RP Dan Otero, taking it for a long homerun ride. "That ball was screamimg as it left", said RED's 1B Joey Votto. REDS lead 2-0.

BACK TO BACK! LF Adam Duvall must of had some Billy Hamilton's BIG LEAGUE CHEW, because he too popped RP Otero's bubble with a blast to left field, increasing the RED'S lead to 3-0.

Another former RED who was brought back RP J.J. Hoover comes in the 7th inning and strikes out the side, CLE hitters looked lost against him. Hoover was brought over from ARI with another former RED 3B Kristopher Negron. Half of the trade looks good so far.

RED'S RP John Lamb comes in the 8th inning and allows CLE's C Yan Gomes to make the score 3-1, serving up a blast to left.

RED'S CP Nick Christiani (Nick is on the RED'S 40 MAN and will most likely be on the AAA Louiseville Bats at start of the season) came in in the 9th to close it out and record a SAVE.

Matt Belisle gets the WIN, the REDS start Spring Training 2-0.

The REDS only get 3 HITS, all three hits were HOMERUNS.

Even though I told myself that once I turned everything over to CPU control that I wouldn't make a single trade, well I did. lol. Two of them that got saved lol.

I guess I'm looking to get the team younger. god for someone that hates analytics I sure am a sucker for it in this game. I traded Eric Hosmer BACK to the San Diego Padres for my original first baseman Matt Olsen.

The second trade I made was to move 3B Eugenio Suarez to Baltimore for 3B Johan Carmargo.

These two trades along took me from (-10K) in weekly revenue to a positive
$504K per week. So I guess what I am trying to do is keep this team above water financially.

There were several other trades that I mad that I didn't save that I might go and see if I can refind if you will.

Once I start tinkering, I can't seem to stop. this is my addiction in this game lol. I will keep you all posted.

The Yankees have swept the Tigers, but in the middle of the series we completed an interesting early season deal with the St Louis Cardinals.

Yankees Get:

The Yankees have been interested in acquiring Bader for a while now, with interest dating back to last season’s trade deadline. With Ozuna having left for Texas over the offseason and not being replaced, there’s a hole in the middle of their lineup. There two best hitters after Goldschidmt are Carpenter and DeJong, and both are notably weaker vs left handed pitching. Their offense sits towards the bottom of the league in production, and are being outscored by each of their division rivals.

They need a boost on offense, and that’s what Clint Frazier does best. With Tyler O’Neill on hand who is more then capable of sliding over into CF, Frazier will take over LF and jump into the 5th spot in the everyday lineup. His contract is very team friendly as well as he’s locked into a 1.8M salary per year through the 2023 season. Mesa adds extra upside to the deal for them. Porcello was off to a solid start at AAA and gives them an experienced option with Wacha, Hudson, and long man Ponce de Leon all struggling to open the season.


For us, we’re stacked offensively. Moving Frazier who comes with some concerns defensively for a strong defensive CF made sense. Bader isn’t much of a threat at the plate but in this lineup he doesn’t need to be. He’s an elite fielder with top level reaction and a very strong arm. His speed is also at an elite level though he’s surprisingly not that great at stealing bases. He’s 25 like Frazier ad comes with the same amount of team control, though he’s set for arbitration after this season. Shreve is simply a throw in to fill a spot in the minors.

For Bader, this deal brings him home. He was born and grew up in NY and was a fan of the team as well. He takes over as the everyday CF hitting 9th. When Gardner returns he’ll be our backup OF.

I like this because many of my trades were to bring back former Reds that I liked or maybe rookies or younger players with C=ties to Cincinnati.

That is the beauty of baseball. I had no idea their potential can increase too. I just had my first draft ever. Can you give me any tips? When do the players become available to my minor league rosters? How should I bring them along to see progress?

(Most of the below is my opinion, based on about 20 seasons worth of mostly simming franchise mode in 2019. Might not necessarily be the best info, but it's been my experience.)

Drafted players are added to your minor league rosters in the offseason. A warning: You have six picks by default and can draft up to 10 players, but you can only carry up to 95 total players in the offseason. If you had a full roster of 90 and no one retires, everyone you draft after the fifth player will be automatically cut. If you have one guy retire, you keep the first six guys drafted. And so on. To avoid this, I usually cut a minor leaguer late in the season or "force" retirement by editing an old player's age or overall. Old enough or bad enough, and they'll probably retire. (You can use this to your advantage and sign rookies other teams cut, as well.)

Tips for progress:

Be patient, and play a player at the appropriate level. If a player is a 50 overall, keep them in A. They don't progress as quickly, but they WILL progress. If you move them along too quickly and they struggle, their stats might go down. In A, they tend to add 1-2 points in all attributes per season.

If a guy is really struggling, consider moving him down a level. If a guy is kicking ***, consider moving him up. But most important, don't rush them. I often don't put guys on my 40-man until I KNOW they're going to be in the majors, because as soon as they play a single MLB game, they're subject to morale fluctuations, which can make them unhappy (and thus perform worse) in the minors. They'll also cost you more to sign.

Finally ... cheating a little can make things more realistic. That "18-year-old" catcher I drafted then eventually traded? He was actually 22 years old when I picked him. I edited him down to 18. At 22 years old and 50 overall in the draft, he would've been 29 years old when he made his MLB debut at 81 overall, and he would've been in his 30s by the time he was actually a star. By editing his age, he instead was a 25-year-old rookie, which is reasonable, with a realistic age for his prime years. Whenever I see a prospect older than 22, whether it's on my team or a computer-controlled one, I drop their age in the offseason. General rule: 23+ and below a 65 overall, and I make them 18. 23+ and 65 or higher, and I'll make them 21. IMO, this better replicates star HS and college prospects, because in the real world, pretty much every single player in the draft is 22 years old or younger. No one gets drafted at 25.

If all you're changing are ages, and if you do it for every team and not just your own, it's not really cheating. Just fixing a bug. But if you're a little more open to cheating, you could apply similar rules to individual attributes. Often teams draft "blue-chip" prospects with an overall rating in the 40s. This is realistic—busts do happen all the time—but the draft isn't deep enough to counter this with late-round gems. I never draft those guys, but I do go through and add attribute points to CPU draft picks from time to time.

Back to non-cheaty tips:

*Morale can help rookies a lot. If you promote them to the majors during September call-ups the year before you plan to move them up full-time, you can then offer them a real contract in the offseason. This allows you to negotiate money and also their role on the team. Offer them a one-year deal with the role of "backup" or "depth." They'll sign, and that will then be their expectation. And then when they're a starter, they'll be happy. Every time I want to sign a player to a one-year deal, I try to get them to agree to a role that's at least one level below what I actually plan on. Helps keep them happy, which boosts their stats, which improves production, which in turn boosts stats. This can take your borderline rookies with high potential into legit stars a bit faster than you'd think. Progression in the majors happens faster than in the minors if they're playing and playing well.

*Don't be afraid of C or even D potential prospects. Their right-now attributes (the left-hand column for each category) are always accurate on the scouting reports, so you'll always know if a guy can hit, run, or field NOW, relative to his peers. The only thing your scouts tell you is how much better they can be. But if you draft a C potential guy with a great bat, he's always going to have a great bat. Maybe he sucks in the field or is slow ... in which case you have yourself a quality, cheap DH or bench bat. And because they have low potential, they're never going to have one halfway decent season and demand a $10 million salary. If you want to build a team in a small market, these guys are key. I currently have an outfielder on my 40-man roster who will be an injury call-up if needed. His overall is about 65. He has D potential. He can't field at all. He has no power. But he has really high contact, decent vision, and is super fast. For the MLB minimum, he's an excellent temporary replacement. I feel like a lot of people would just cut that guy. I love them.

*Like being patient with player development, make them be patient with contracts. When you have prospects under team control, don't give them a long-term deal as soon as they ask for one. Keep them on one-year deals. It's cheaper this way, and they'll be happier. If you sign a guy to a five-year deal with a "starter" role, he very well might expect to be an ace a year later. Now you've got an unhappy player for four more years if he's not actually an ace. But on a one-year deal, players never seem to change their expected role.

My Braves are 31 -24 on the year. Unfortunately I am not in 1st place anymore. I was a front runner for the month of April. It was me and the Nationals. Now the Mets are in 1st, I'm 3.0GB and the Nationals are 5.0GB.

One main injury on my team is Jason Heyward, broken ankle will be out for 2 months. He was attempting to steal 2nd when the injury occured. Also lost OF Matt Joyce to fractured forearm, out for 2 months. He was stat line: BA .289 4HR, 12RBI OPS .741. I didn't make a trade. I brought up Adam Duvall and Rafael Ortega and so far so good.

My team still is batting over .280 for the year. It pains me to still be struggling with Freddie. I can't get to HR swing going. He has only 4HR's in 208 AB's. Acuna Jr. and Donaldson have 12 & 14 respectful in less than 196 AB's

Pitching: SP Max Fried has been the Ace of the rotation.I pitched in the #3 slot, but now after a day off he'll be the No. 1 starter opening our first series against the Nats at home.
Fried is 7-2, ERA 2.20, 69 IP, WHIP 0.96, K/9 9.56. Julio's doing well for me. He has 7 wins as well, but ERA is 3.88. CP Kimbrel is been dominating on the back end when he is called upon. 16 saves out of 17 save opportunities. He has 43K's in 27.1IP. That's a 14.16 K/9.

If I can finish this month off on a 3 game winning streak I will be a happy camper.

Cardinals place Braxton Garrett on outright waivers




The Cardinals have placed LHP Braxton Garrett on outright waivers yesterday. The 26 year old Garrett was removed from the 40 man roster and the Cards are hoping to outright him to Memphis, but he will have to clear waivers first.


The Cardinals added Garrett to the 40 man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, but after his extremely rough outing in the Spring opener, the Cardinals have decided to outright him back to Memphis and add a more major league ready pitcher to the 40 man in his place.


Garrett pitched primarily at AA Springfield last season where he was 11-6 with a 3.89 ERA and he recorded 153 punchouts. He made 2 starts at Memphis where he was touched up badly giving up 5 homeruns over 7 innings of work and posted an ERA of over 9.


The Cardinals have not said who will replace Garrett but its likely to be RHP Ryan Helsley.

I just really began a Phillies Franchise. Pulled off a few unrealistic moves to bring in Miggy, and Jose Abreu. I still play Hoskins and the latter named two when I can.

Currently about 13/14 games in and currently on a 8 game win streak. We are dead last in HRs in the league with 3...

But our pitching is lights out. Miggy, Hoskins, and Segura has been raking. Abreu has struggled as well as Haseley.

Nola just got his first win in three appearances. But is 1-1 with 1.17 ERA and 38Ks...

Will give more updates as we get deeper

CIN SP Shohei Ohtani vs SFG SP Johnny Cueto

This would be SP Shohei Ohtani's MLB Spring Training debut, and his debut did not go well. In three innings Shohei allowed 4 RUNS on 5 HITS. Wether it was nerves, just a bad outting or simply Ohtani was out matched by MLB hitting, it has made the RED's ownership and front office a little nervous.

The rest of the RED'S pitching did not fair that much better against SFG's batters. REDS LOST 4-7. Their record is now 2-1 and play ARI tomorrow.

CIN SP Mike Leake vs ARI SP Robbie Ray

Another former RED brought back via trade this year is SP Mike Leake. Mike got the start versus the Diamondbacks. Mike pitched 3 good innings, allowing just 2 HITS, NO RUNS and 4 SO and left with a 1-0 lead.

This lead would hold up until the bottom of the 8th when RP Michael Lorenzen would be the unlucky pitcher on the mound when a series of bizarre events would happen. A broken bat infield single, a bunt down the third base line that would end up a single, a throwing error by 2B Pat Valaika, another bunt towards 1B that no one seemed to be able to get to and a few hits to the outfield and the score would be 1-4, ARI leads.

The REDS tried to rally but was snuffed out on a double play ball, REDS managed to score one more RUN, but lost 2-4.

The REDS are now 2-2 in Spring Traing and play the White Sox next.

MLB THE SHOW 17 - 2017 SEASON - SPRING TRAINING - GAME 5 vs CWS

CIN SP Homer Bailey vs CWS SP Miguel Gonzalez

The Soxs would get off to a 1-0 lead against Homer and the REDS when LF Melky Cabrera would launch one way over the rightfield wall in the top of the first. Bailey would settle down and pitch through the 3rd allowing just the one run.

The REDS would tie it, 1-1, in the bottom of the 4th and then take the lead in the bottom of the 6th to go up 2-1. In the bottom of the 8th the REDS would tack on 2 RUNS to make it 4-2, and this would be the final score.

The REDS are 3-2 through thier first five games and first trip through the rotation. The REDS batting is terrible, they are 27th in the league in BA at .211, 19th in the league in both RUNS 15 and HITS 34. Good news is the pitching is 7th in ERA with a 2.86, 7th in RUNS ALLOWED with 14 and 2nd in SO with 45, only 1 behind the LAD who have 46 SO.

Next up at MIL, SP Anthony DeSclafani gets his second start, lets hope it goes well.

By the way there are trade rumors that CINCY may be eyeing one or two White Sox players...any guesses. Remember it is 2017, and one may be a rookie.
