Giants and White Sox punch tickets to play in October

The Giants and White Sox have clinched their respective divisions and will be playing baseball in October. Both teams will now focus on clinching home field advantage for the duration of the playoffs.

Cardinals lose Wacha for remainder of regular season

The Cardinals have placed RHP Michael Wacha on the 15 Day IL due to shoulder issues. Wacha was removed in the 3rd inning of his start against the Reds with the injury. Wacha will miss the rest of the regular season and likely the NLDS if the Cardinals are playing in October.

This is a big blow to a pitching staff that has struggled over the past few weeks as Wacha was one of the steady and consistent arms that manager Mike Matheny could rely on every 5th day.

Dakota Hudson will move into the rotation to take the place of Wacha.

Kyle Wright was recalled from Memphis to fulfill the vacant roster spot.

In my second season with the Montreal Expos I was able to throw my first Immaculate inning with my rookie pitcher against the Colorado. I have come close a few times but could never get it.

I like how my rookie pitcher dominated the Nationals in his first start but then the second start which was against the Nationals also, he got roughed up giving up 4 home runs. It was really cool how the game replicated that.

        Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2023

Chicago and Milwaukee Look to Gain Edge in game 3

The roof at Miller Park was open for Game 3 as it was an unseasonably warm day in October in Wisconsin. With the series tied at 1-1 the Brewers are hoping to get more out of the top of their lineup as Tim Andeson, Bobby Bradley and Yellich have struggled in the early slate of post season games. Each player is hitting under .100. Brailyn Marquez was on the mound hoping to continue their woes as the Brew Crew had Dylan File on the mound. File has been a sore in the side of the Cubs lineup this year he started the year with 3 outings against the cubs where he pitched 23 innings and allowed just 3 runs. The Cubs have shown patience at the plate since getting shut out in game 1 and game 3 was a prime example as they would end the day getting 8 men on base with base on balls. This started in the first inning as Bryant and Contreras got on base on walks and a single by Schwarber loaded the bases in the first with 1 out. Dylan was able to keep them off the board but left the first inning throwing 34 pitches. The Cubs were only able to get 1 run in on File but was able to run him from the game after the 4th due to his high pitch count. Marquez continued his great second year campaign as he went 7 innings striking out 7 and not allowing any runs. The Cubs brought in the lefty Chacin in the 8th to face the top of the order but could not get out of the inning unscathed as he gave up a solo shot to Christian Yellich to tie the game.
After the Cubs went scoreless in the top of the 9th Carl Edwards Jr got into trouble as he allowed a single and a double to put men in scoring position with no outs. Edwards rallied after a mound visit to strike out the side to get the game into extra innings. The Cubs were able to load the bases in the 10th and Danny Santana came in as a pinch hitter. He smacked a line drive that scored 2. Reyes was able to get another hit to make it 4-1. Clase allowed 1 hit in the 9th but shut the door on the Brewers as he got the final out by striking out Bobby Bradley.

In Game 3 of their series the Friars went up 2-1 in the series and the knocked around Marcus Stroman. Stroman was bounced out of the game after 3 ⅔ innings. Stroman walked 6 and gave up 5 runs in his outing. The Cubs will look to end the Brewers season in game 4 as AJ Puk will face off against Brandon Woodruff.

Cubs Look To Close Out Brewers

In Game 4, The Cubs had AJ Puk on the mound and had Oscar Colas in right field. The Cubs are rolling the dice that they can close out the Brewers tonight as Colas will not be available to pitch Game 5 due to playing in the field. Milwaukee had Brandon Woodruff on the mound and the Cubs got things rolling in the 2nd after they started the inning as Baez doubled and Ian Happ and Oscar Colas walked. With Puk up with the bases loaded no outs Cubs pulled off the safety squeeze to bring Baez home for the first run of the game. Victory Reyes made it 2-0 as he singled. Woodruff was able to get out of the jam after giving up a single to Rizzo to again load the bases as he avoided further damage by getting Willson Contreras to pop up to center to end the inning. In the bottom of the 2nd the Brewers had 2 on with no out after a double and a single. Tyrone Taylor was able to cut the lead to 2-1 after he drove in a run on a sacrifice.

In the 3rd Schwarber again had runners in scoring position early as he led off the top of the inning off with a double. Javy has struggled, managing just 2 hits so far in the postseason but did his part as he walked again to have runners at 2nd and 1st. With Ian Happ up he was able to take a 3-1 pitch right down the 1st base line that resulted in the 2 runners scoring as he ended up on 2nd as the cubs went up 4-1

The Brewers were able to get back on board in the 4th as Omar Narváez hit a 2 run home run to cut Chicago’s lead to 1. The Brewers were able to tie the game in the 5th as Tim Anderson got to 3rd on a triple and Yellich was able to bring him in on a single to make it 4-4. Puk was able to get out of the inning but after 5 innings the teams were back to square one.

In the 7th Cubs broke the tie on a 2 run double by Javy Baez as the Cubs pulled away 6-4 but the lead was short lived as Yellich again tied the game in the 7th with a 2 run home run. As the game headed to the 9th tied the Cubs got a spark from Willson Contreras as he singled to get the go ahead run on base. But after 2 quick outs from Hoerner and Baez quickly dampered the thoughts of a rally. Ian Happ came up big once again as he took a ball to right field for a no doubter home run to put the Cubs ahead 8-6.

With the lead once again, The Cubs handed the ball to Emmanuel Clase as they looked to eliminate the Brewers. Clase made short work of the Brewers as he was able to strike out the final 3 Milwaukee batters to advance Chicago to the NLCS.

All of the divisional series ended on the same night; the Padres rode 8 innings of shutout ball from MacKenzie Gore to beat the Mets 3-0. The Angels and Bo Sox completed sweeps as the Angels beat Minnesota 5-4 and the Red sox beat the White Sox 2-0. The NL will start the Championship Series in 4 days as the Cubs will face the Padres, who were the last team to beat Chicago in a postseason series.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

My Pirates have gotten off to a truly horrible, albeit realistic start in year 1. After 20 games I was at 5-15, dead last in Runs scored, HRs, SLG. ERA, HR Allowed....I've always been good at identifying balls from strikes and not chasing pitches, but this year, using Armor's sliders, the game really penalizes you for swinging at bad pitches to hit, even if they are strikes. You really need to wait for a good pitch to hit, which is awesome.

Hopefully, I've turned a corner. Pitching-wise, I have 3 straight good starts. Taillion lost a 1-0 shutout to Kershaw. Then we knocked Buehler around for 6 runs in 5 innings, with Archer going 6 scoreless. Then, in game 1 against the Brewers, I was able to rough up a spot starter of theirs for 5 runs in 3 innings en route to a 9-3 win. This 2 game winning streak is my longest of the year! The bad news for me is in this game I lost Josh Bell and Kevin Newman for two weeks.

A successful year 1 for me would be: 1) Taillon and Mitch Keller taking a step forward 2) Musgrove and Trevor Williams becoming steady 3s and 4s. 3) Archer pitching like an ace. If it looks like it'll take multiple years to rebuild I can flip him. If other pieces are falling into place, then if he's worth it I'll pick up his option.

Around the diamond, Bell at 1st, and then two of Kevin Newman, Kevin Kramer, Adam Frazier and Cole Tucker to step up and show they belong. At 3B, I'd love Colin Moran to be great so I can move him along for something good, as K'Bryan Hayes is the future over there. Catcher is a black hole that I'll need to fill from outside the organization. Sorry for the long post, the next ones will be shorter!

          Let's Go Bucs!

Cardinals split series with Reds, clinch playoff berth

The Cardinals will be playing baseball in October!

The Cardinals split their 4 game series with the Reds over the weekend, but did enough, and thanks to the Rockies, to clinch a spot in the postseason.

The Reds took the first two games of the series, but the Cardinals rode strong pitching performances from Junior Fernandez and Kyle Funkhouser to earn the split and the right to play in October.

The Cardinals magic number is "2" now, as they lead the Cubs by 4 1/2 games heading into the final week of the season. The Cardinals and Cubs will meet for the final 3 games of the season this weekend in Chicago.

The Cardinals are hosting the Brewers for their final 3 game homestand of the regular season.

              The Amazins

Mets Win in Bottom of the 9th, Sweep Astros
              June 5, 2024

The Mets flipped it right back after being swept by the Marlins by sweeping the Houston Astros at Citi Field, including a dramatic come from behind win in the finale.

The Mets won Game 1 and Game 2 by scores of 10-0 and 9-3, but trailed the finale 1-0 in the bottom of the 7th. Mets top prospect and recent call up, 2B Brent Durango, smashed his first major league home run into the left field bleachers, tying the game. Michael Conforto hit a pinch-hit double in the bottom of the 9th and Richard Urena brought him home with a double a couple of batters later.

Rookie C Eddy Fabregas also had a productive day at the plate, going 3-4 with a double.

SP Dakota Chalmers impressed once again going 7 IP with 7 K and 1 ER. In his first full season in the rotation, Chalmers is 3-2 with a 3.27 ERA and 1.10 WHIP, and has 68 K and 20 BB in 74.1 IP. He's got bonafide ace stuff, his biggest weakness being his stamina. 80 pitches seems to be his cap at this point in the career, and he'll have to increase that number if he wants to be a future #1.

The Mets have a day off before a quick 2-game series in Seattle against the 35-30 Mariners.

                Cardinals swept by Brewers

The Cardinals were swept by the last place Brewers in their final regular season series at home. The Cardinals just looked terrible in this series, no getting offense and the bullpen giving up runs like they were handing out candy on Halloween.

The only silver lining is the Pirates were able to take one game against the Cubs in their series, so the Cardinals will have a 3 game lead over the Cubs as the two meet in Chicago for the final series of the regular season. One win in the series and the Cardinals will clinch the NL Central. Get swept and we'll have a one game playoff.

Crazy to think it looked a few weeks ago as though the Cardinals were going to clinch the division early and were poised to make a deep run in October. Now they could be a wild card team and be out of the postseason before it ever really gets started.

Cardinals clinch the National League Central Division

The Cardinals (90-72) have won the National League Central Division for the 2nd straight season. The Cardinals were 3 up on the Cubs heading into a 3 game series with the Cubs in Chicago. The Cubs won on Friday afternoon, but the Cardinals were able to finally secure the division title on Saturday afternoon behind a stellar pitching performance by Funkhouser and the bullpen.

The Cardinals hold the 2nd best record in the National League behind the Giants which means they will be the host for the NLDS. And for the 2nd straight season the Cardinals will matchup with the Marlins in the NLDS. The Marlins swept the Cardinals last year in the NLDS.

The Cubs will be the number one wildcard and will host the Padres with the winner advancing to face the Giants in the NLDS.

Cardinals lose Christian Yelich for postseason

The injuries just keep piling up the for the Cardinals. The Cardinals have placed RF Christian Yelich on the 60 Day IL due to a broken wrist. Yelich suffered the injury on Saturday crashing into the ivy at Wrigley Field in an attempt to make a catch.

Yelich was hitting .265 on the season and was a veteran leader in the clubhouse for a team that is quite young in terms of guys with experience playing in postseason and pennant chases.

Chris Taylor will take Yelich's spot on the NLDS roster.

                    Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2023

Chicago and San Diego Square off in Game 1

After a 3 day break the Padres rolled into town for Game 1 of the NLCS. The Friars had Chris Paddack on the mound as he would take on Oscar Colas. Paddack threw a complete game shutout in his first postseason start and the Padres looked for him to dominate again. The Padres were the last team to beat the Cubs a postseason as they knocked out Chicago in the NLDS in ‘20.

Both pitchers lived up to the hype as the game was scoreless after 5 innings. Paddrick had 7k’s and had given up just 2 hits through 5 but he wouldn’t get out of the 6th; Kris Bryant changed the narrative when he took a 1-2 changeup that was left in the zone to left field for a solo home run.
                    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Rvr1wyx-BTQ" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The trouble continued for Paddack as he gave up a single to Rizzo then walked Contreras and Schwarber to load the bases with no outs. San Diego pulled Paddack and Baez proceeded to strike out. Ian Happ brought the score to 2-0 as he wore a pitch inside allowing Rizzo to walk home on the HBP. Rafeal Guerra grounded into what should have been a double play but the young utility player made a hustle play to beat the throw as Contreras was able to make it home. The Cubs couldn't muster any more but the damage was done. Colas went 6 innings and was able to avoid trouble to keep any Friars from scoring; the Cubs pen was perfect as Carl Edwards Jr, Jovanny Cruz and Class pitched a scoreless 7th, 8th and 9th inning to give the Cubs the 3-0 win in game one.

In Game 2 Kyle Hendricks returned to the mound looking to send the Cubs out west with a 2-0 lead. Kyle Hendricks looked to rebound from his start against the Brewers where he only lasted 2 innings before being removed due to injury. The Padres would send Dineslon Lamet to the mound for game 2. The Cubs got things rolling in the 2nd as Kyle Schwarber drew a walk to start the inning and Baez singled. Ian Happ flew out to shallow right field but not before the runners were able to advance on a passed ball. Nico Hoerner was able to make enough contact to get Schwarber in on a sacrifice as the Cubs took the early 1-0 lead. In the 4th Hendricks got in trouble as he gave up 4 hits to that lead to the Padres taking the lead as 2 runs scored but he was saved by Schwarber's arm as he was able to field a bloop single and nail the runner at the plate to end the inning.
                    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/si1xQUxwZTM" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The game remained tied until the 6th when a single & consecutive double led to the Padres taking a 3-1 lead and ended Hendricks' night. Hendricks gave up 9 hits in 6.1 of work. Andre Chacin took over and after giving up 2 singles he was able to settle to get out of the bases loaded jam without any more runs scoring. The Padres added another run in the 8th and the Cubs were down to their final 3 outs in the 9th. Contreras and Baez got 2 quick outs and the Cubs were fading fast. They got a jolt as Ian Happ was able to make contact and drive a ball that split the right and center fielders; Brantley had a play at the warning track but missed the ball. Happ hustled and was to second by the time the ball was fielded. The centerfield failed to hit the cut off man and Happ was able to cut the lead to 4-2 with an inside the park home run.
                    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3NVEFhPYObU" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Nico Hoerner was due up next and hit a grounder to the left side of the infield but the throw was off and allowed him to reach on an error. The Cubs went to the bench to hit for the pitcher’s spot and Oscar Colas looked to keep the 2 out magic going. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be as Colas saw struggles at the plate continue as he struck out swinging. Colas has been a .260-270s hitter in his 2+ year career but the past 2 postseasons he has struggled to get it going; in ‘23 he is hitting just .077. The Cubs were out hit 16-6 in teh 4-2 lost. After the game the Cubs took their frustrations out on Matthew Ross who was calling balls and strikes, Chicago could never get comfortable in the box as Ross’ strike zone changed at a whim and they felt Lamet got many favorable calls.

The ALCS started up with the news that Mike Clevinger was removed from the playoff roster. Clevinger had to come out of his last start but officials in Boston had been mum on his status. With his removal from the roster it was announced he will be out the remainder of the postseason as he has fractured wrist. In Game the Angels routed Boston 11-3. Berrios was roughed up and lasted only 5 innings. As Chicago-San Diego took a day off the ALSC was the sole game played and the Angels again took the Red Sox to task as they won in dominating fashion 9-1. Los Angeles deadline acquisition Shane Bieber got the best of Chris Sale as he gave up 3 runs before leaving the game in the 6th, that's when the bullpen imploded for Boston as they gave up 6 more runs as the Angels moved out 2 games to none in the series.

Chris Taylor will take Yelich's spot on the NLDS roster.
tough break with Yelich, i've been lucky that the Central has been a disaster in my 'chise so i've been able to rest my starters quite a bit down the stretch; its biting me in the *** now, can't get timely hits and San Diego has the momentum in the NLCS.

Cardinals use long ball to win Game 1 of NLDS

There will not be a repeat of last year, as the Cardinals hit 3 homeruns in route to a 4-0 shutout over the Marlins in Game 1 of the NLDS.

Things got dicey early for Kyle Funkhouser as he would pitch out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning and pitch out of trouble in the 2nd inning, as he then settled down to pitch 6 strong innings of shutout baseball. The bullpen was flawless as Jonny Venters, Corey Littrell, and Jordan Hicks would pitch 3 perfect innings to close out the win.

Nolan Gorman was the star of Game 1 as he would hit 2 homeruns in his first ever postseason game. In the 3rd, he hit a solo shot that gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Two innings later he would do it again, to make it 2-0 Redbirds. Brendan McKay would add a two run shot in the the bottom of the 8th, to push the lead to 4-0 as the Cardinals won their first postseason game in 2 years.

Game 2 will pit Jack Flaherty on the bump for the Cardinals and the Marlins will counter with Jarlin Garcia.

Michael Wacha available for the NLCS if still playing

The Cardinals learned on Saturday that Michael Wacha will be available for the NLCS should the Cardinals advance that far. Wacha who was placed on the IR due to shoulder issues, has been cleared to return to the mound, but will have to wait until the NLCS, provided the Cardinals get there. Wacha was one of the more consistent arms on the pitching staff and will be a welcomed addition to the playoff roster.

The Pirates continue their uptick in performance, both at the plate and on the bump. They completed a 3 game sweep of the Brewers, this represents their first series victory since their opening series against Tampa, as well as their first wins at home and in the division. We're still in last place, still about 9 games under .500, but it's starting to turn around a little bit. Up next is another series against the Dodgers, including a repeat of what was an excellent Taiilon vs. Kershaw duel, Kershaw took the first one 1-0, looking forward to the rematch.

Jarlin Garcia dominates Cards bats...Marlins win Game 2

Jarlin Garcia was masterful on the mound for the Marlins. The 30 year old pitched 8 scoreless innings allowing just 2 hits and striking out 6. Austin Davis closed out the game on just 6 pitches as he got Franco, McKay, and Moncada to hit lazy fly balls that ended the game and tied the series at 1 game apiece.

The Cardinals only managed 2 hits in the game as Harrison Bader and J.J. Bleday each recorded a single. Franco, McKay and Moncada are a combined 1 for 13 in the series.

Jack Flaherty was roughed up early as he only lasted 3 innings giving up 3 runs on 5 hits in those 3 innings. He was hit hard all 3 innings and some timely double plays kept things from getting uglier than they did. Once again the bullpen was solid as even Josh Rogers pitched 2 innings of scoreless baseball and striking out 3 in those two innings of work. Brandon Workman, Jonny Venters, Adam Cimber, and Roberto Osuna each worked an inning to keep the score where it was, but unfortunately the bats took the night off.

The two teams will travel Sunday to Miami for games 3 and 4 of the series. Junior Fernandez is expected to get the ball for the Cardinals in Game 3 while the Marlins will hand the ball to Trevor Richards.
