Cardinals need to do the improbable after losing Game 3

The Cardinals just can't put it all together as they lose Game 3 of the World Series and now trail the World Series 3 games to none to the White Sox.

The first two losses the offense and defense let the team down. Last night it was the pitching and offense as Junior Fernandez was again roughed up and Josh Rogers has allowed a homerun in every postseason appearance this year, and last night's 2 run shot he gave up was the deciding factor in the game.

Not really much else to say aside from venting frustration. The team gets a lead and the pitching decides it doesn't want to win. Pitching is strong and the bats don't want to connect. Team can get out of danger and defense looks like Little League.

Game 4 will feature Dakota Hudson for the Cardinals while the White Sox will turn to Mike Soroka.

      The Amazins

Mets Agree to Deal with White Sox, Peterson Headed to Chicago

      June 21, 2024

The Mets have agreed to terms on a deal with the Chicago White Sox this afternoon prior to their game with the Cincinnati Reds.

      White Sox Receive:
      1B D.J. Peterson

      Mets Receive:
      SS Carlos Tejeda
      RHP Lester McCarthy

D.J. Peterson came into the year in a planned platoon at first base, splitting time with Steven Logan. Unfortunately for Peterson, Logan has emerged as the every day first baseman, and Peterson can't seem to find his footing in the majors, sporting a sub .200 batting average this year. Peterson was acquired from the Mariners prior to the 2022 season, and in 862 AB over the last 7 years he is hitting .233/.329/.367 with 23 HR and 98 RBI. Not quite the level of production you want from a big league first baseman. The 32 year old is making $2.3M this season and has one arbitration year left before he hits free agency.

For the Mets, this move was more about getting something of value for Peterson rather than losing him for nothing on the waiver wire since he is out of options. The White Sox, who are currently 3.5 out of the AL Central and Wild Card, acquire a first baseman with big league experience and a couple years of controllability. Peterson will immediately become the most talented 1B in the White Sox organization and should get a shot to earn the starting job over there.

The pieces the Mets are getting back are both years away from the majors, if they make it at all. SS Carlos Tejeda is a speed first, contact second middle infielder, and fits the mold of the Mets trying to bring in more speed to their organization. The 20-year old will report to Double-A Binghamton.

RHP Lester McCarthy is a 21-year old flame thrower with a nasty breaking ball. His problem isn't his stuff, it's his control. He struggles with walks and is known to hang a breaking ball or two. He will also report to Double-A Binghamton.

The Mets will recall 3B Walter Sato to fill the vacant roster spot. Look for Sato to get a lot of pinch-hit opportunities with the occasional start at third. C Jonathan Lucroy will spell Steven Logan at 1B when he needs a rest. C Eddy Fabregas has proven to be more than capable with the bat in his hand and is serviceable behind the dish, so he'll enjoy an uptick in playing time as well with Lucroy now getting more reps at first.

Cardinals walkoff Game 4 to stay alive

There will be a Game 5 as the Cardinals walked off the White Sox in 10 innings in Game 4 to keep hope alive.

The Cardinals struck first with a Yoan Moncada sac fly in the first, but gave it back in the 3rd when Zack Collins hit a 2 run double down the left field line to give the White Sox the 2-1 lead.

The Cards would tie it in the 6th when J.J. Bleday delivered an RBI double and then 2 innings later in the 8th, would hit a go ahead homerun to put the Cardinals up 3-2.

Heading to the 9th, the Cardinals turned to Roberto Osuna, but after being a perfect 35-35 in the regular season and 3 for 3 in the postseason, he would blow his first save of the season when Nick Madrigal took him deep to right center tying the game at 3 apiece. Corey Littrell would stop the bleeding and get it to the bottom of the 9th where the Cards went down 1, 2, 3.

Littrell pitched a perfect 10th. McKay would lead off the bottom of the 10th with a double. Paul DeJong pinch hitting for the pitcher spot would strike out. C.J. McElroy who came in for Bleday for defensive purposes would ground out to second and McKay would take 3rd. Eddie Ortiz would come up with two outs and on a 1-1 pitch, single to right to drive in McKay and give the Cardinals the walk-off win in Game 4.

Game 5 is tomorrow night with the Cardinals turning to ace Kyle Funkhouser. The White Sox have no announced a Game 5 starter.

Cardinals force series back to Chicago, win Game 5 4-2

The World Series is heading back to Chicago as the Cardinals win Game 5, 4-2 over the White Sox.

Kyle Funkhouser started for the Cardinals and was solid for 5 2/3 innings before being lifted for Brandon Workman after giving up 2 runs that at the time had the Cardinals trailing 2-1, but the Cardinals would get 3 in the bottom of the 5th, to go ahead and get the win for Funkhouser.

The Cardinals struck first in the 4th when Brendan McKay hit a solo homerun to right to put the Cardinals up 1-0. But as mentioned the White Sox got 2 in the 5th thanks to Ben Gamel RBI single and then Reynaldo Lopez, White Sox starting pitcher, of all people drove in one with a RBI double down the right field line.

But the lead would be short lived as the Cardinals would get 3 in the bottom of the 5th thanks again to the youngsters, as J.J. hit a solo shot to lead off the inning and tie the game at two. After Eddie Ortiz singled up the middle, Nolan Gorman got his first hit of the World Series with a 2 run blast to right center that put the Cards up 4-2 which would be the final score.

The bullpen was again solid for the Cards as Burdi pitched a perfect 7th, Venters a perfect 8th, and Hicks gave up a hit with one out but then got Christian Pache to hit into a game ending 4-6-3 double play for his 2nd save of the postseason.

The teams are off tomorrow, but will be in Chicago on Thursday for Game 6 as Jack Flaherty will get the ball for the Cardinals and Jesus Castillo will take the hill for the White Sox as they try to close this series out for a 3rd time.

Cardinals force Game 7, win Game 6, 5-3

There will be a Game 7 for the 2026 World Series. Every postseason series the Cardinals have been involved in have gone the distance. They went 5 against the Marlins in the NLDS and 7 against the Giants in the NLCS.

The Cardinals jumped out early scoring a single run in the first and second innings. Moncada doubled home Harrison Bader in the first and McElroy hit a sac fly in the 2nd that put the Cards up 2-0.

But the White Sox would fight back getting single runs in both the 3rd and 4th innings.Delvin Perez hit a solo homerun in the 3rd to cut the lead to one, and then Doug Pedersen and Gavin Sheets hit back to back doubles in the 4th to tie the game.

Nolan Gorman would hit a solo shot in the 6th to put the Cardinals back up 3-2, and Harrison Bader would hit a solo in the 7th to make it a 4-2 game.

In the 8th, the White Sox got within a run when Jomar Reyes had a groundout RBI that scored Gamel and cut the lead to one, 4-3.

The Cardinals would get one more in the 9th when Andrew Knizner doubled, and was pinch ran for by Tommy Edman. C.J. McElroy, who started in right, singled home Edman to get the insurance run to lead 5-3.

Roberto Osuna would get Gavin Sheets and Zack Collins to each fly out and then strike out Logan Sowers to close out Game 6 and force the dramatic Game 7.

The Cardinals have not yet announced who will start Game 7 tomorrow night. The White Sox are going with Michael Kopech.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

Cardinals are the 2026 World Series Champions!

The Cardinals have done the improbable of coming all the way back from a 3-0 series deficit in the World Series, to clinch their 12th World Series Championship!!!

The Cardinals got off early in Game 7 against Michael Kopech taking an early 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning with Bader and Franco driving in back to back runs to put the Cards up.

In the 4th, Harrison Bader would deliver a 2 out RBI that made it 3-0 Cardinals and they would get another run in the 5th when Yoan Moncada delivered a solo shot into the right field seats to make it 4-0.

But the White Sox would fight back in the bottom of the 5th, as Junior Fernandez was touched up for back to back 2 out homeruns by Zack Collins and Logan Sowers. Brandon Workman came in to get Delvin Perez to pop out to end the threat.

The Cardinals would use Dakota Hudson in the 6th to get through the inning and then turned to Corey Littrell to pitch the 7th to get Sheets, Collins and Sowers. He would walk Sowers that would bring the tying run to the plate, but he struck out Delvin Perez to end the threat.

He would start the 8th against Ben Gamel and get Gamel to ground out to Nolan Gorman. With the top of the lineup coming up next, the Cardinals turned to Zach Burdi who would strikeout Madrigal and Engel to get the game to the 9th.

The Cardinals got Roberto Osuna up to take the ball with a 2 run lead and facing the heart of the White Sox lineup (Reyes, Pedersen, and Sheets), but the Cardinals offense took the pressure off, exploding for 6 runs in the top of the 9th to push the lead to 8 runs, capped off by a grand slam by Andrew Knizner.

Roberto Osuna would get Reyes to pop out, but then Pedersen singled to left. Osuna got Sheets to pop out to Gorman and then Zack Collins to pop out to Brendan McKay to clinch the Cardinals 12th World Series title and their first since 2011.

J.J. Bleday was named World Series and NL Postseason MVP. He hit .407 with 2 homeruns and 4 RBI's in the World Series and .365 with 3 homeruns and 7 RBI's in the postseason.

Up next is the offseason as the Cardinals have a few decisions to make as they for the first time in 15 years, will be the defending World Series Champions!

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

Just started an Orioles rebuild and had a blast in Spring Training figuring out my Opening Day roster

SP: John Means, Alex Cobb, Asher Wojciechowski, Wade LeBlanc, Aaron Sanchez

The final two spots in the rotation were up for grabs between three first-year Orioles: Wade LeBlanc, Kohl Stewart, and Aaron Sanchez. Sanchez was signed to a one-year, $2.0M contract and earned a rotation spot after allowing only 2 ER over 20.0 IP this spring. LeBlanc and Stewart posted uninspiring numbers in their opportunities, but LeBlanc got the nod for a rotation spot due to his 1.13 BB/9 in 16.0 IP compared to Stewart's 2.55 BB/9 in 17.2 IP.

RP: Mychal Givens, Paul Fry, Shawn Armstrong, Hunter Strickland, Hunter Harvey, Tanner Scott, Dillon Tate, Miguel Castro

Strickland and Sam Tuivailala were signed (one-year, $1.0M and $800K respectively) for the chance to compete for a spot in the pen. Strickland earned his spot, as did Harvey, Scott, and Tate, who all beat out other veterans on the 40-man for their spots.

                      C: Pedro Severino, Chance Sisco

Severino seemed to throw out anyone who ran on him, so he'll get the bulk of the playing time behind the plate. I wish there were a way to check how many runners your catcher has thrown out.

                      1B: Chris Davis

                      Davis had a decent spring, posting a .910 OPS and 0.67 BB/K.

                      2B: Scooter Gennett, Hanser Alberto

Gennett and Alberto platooned at the keystone and batted second all spring and will continue to do so during the regular season. Gennett signed a one-year, $3.0M contract with the Orioles and had his best offensive year only two seasons ago.

                      SS: Jose Iglesias

Was out-hit by Richie Martin, but Iglesias sported an OBP over .400 and his glove plays every day.

                      3B: Rio Ruiz

Slugged .477 and held his own against lefties (.333 BA), will get the chance to play every day.

                      UTIL: Pat Valaika

One of the most contentious roster spots was awarded to Valaika after his power display this spring. He belted 4 home runs and played every infield position.

OF: Trey Mancini, Austin Hays, Anthony Santander, Mason Williams

Williams beat out Dwight Smith Jr. and Cedric Mullins for the 4th OF spot after getting 11 hits in his 24 at-bats this spring.

                      DH: Renato Nunez

Nunez was the most potent bat in the O's lineup this spring, swatting 6 home runs while slashing .435/.527/.823 and batting cleanup.

                      IL: D.J. Stewart

Stewart was swinging a hot bat before he dislocated his shoulder, gathering 9 hits in 23 at-bats including 3 home runs and 2 doubles. He will start the year on the Injured List and miss at least the first 3 weeks of the regular season.

Gonna give Adley some time to progress. Only played 3 games so far and Severino went 4/4 in my last. I'm hoping I can flip him (any many more) by the deadline.

They're a lot of fun to play with. Went 1-2 against the Yankees and Ruiz already has 3 home runs. I have no clue what to do with Davis and his contract other than hope he hangs 'em up after the season.

This is pretty cool. My franchise play through with Oakland is currently entering the 2049 season.

                              Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2023

Fall Classic Moves to West Coast

For Game 3 the Angels were hoping that the home field would provide an advantage after losing the first 2 games in Chicago. LA would go with Eduardo Rodriguez who was 14-10 with a 4.14 ERA. The cubs would go with Brailyn in game 3, Marquez was brilliant in his first postseason start but had a rougher time against the Padres and looked to bounce back. The score was scoreless until the top of the 3rd after a Contreras single and a double by Baez set up a Ian Happ to make it 2-0 on a ball that dropped just short of Trout in Center.

In the bottom half of the inning, Marquez looked to keep rolling but Mike Trout changes things as he hit a towering shot in the center.
                              <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ICkm6gXig_I" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Marquez would end up giving up back to back home runs as he left a pitch in the zone for Rendon as well.
                              <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/B4yk7QXuKKg" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Marquez was able to get Dickerson to fly out but Jo Addell got on board with a liner just past Baez at short, after stealing the 2nd Brian McCann came up with 2 outs was able to single to give the Angels the lead.

In the 5th the Cubs were able to get back to even as Justin Turner walked & Contreras knocked in a run on a double to even the game

Unfortunately Brailyn would not be able to hold the lead as he would struggle with giving up the long ball in the 5th. He faced the top of the order and Jamhai Jones would get on with a single to left field. After getting Simmons to pop up to the left side of the infield Trout was up with a chance to take back the lead. Marquez tried to run a high inside fastball in on Trout but missed his mark and left it over the plate which Trout was able to get enough of to get it over the outstretched Contreras to make it 5-3.

Marquez was able to get Rendon to a 1-2 count but again couldn’t keep his punch outpitch from going over the plate and Rendon crushed it for his second home run and went back to back with Trout once again.

After a mound visit to warm up the pen Marquez was left in to face Dickerson who put the ball in play and ended Brailyn’s day. Marquez would lead the mound visibly frustrated with his day as he could only go 4 ⅓ innings, striking out 4 while giving up 6 runs on 10 hits and a walk including 4 home runs. Wick was able to stop the bleeding and get the final 2 outs to get the Cubs out of the 5th.

The Score would remain at 6-3 until the 7th when Yovanny Cruz would face the 2-3-4 hitters. After getting Simmons to strike out Cruz would not allow Trout to go for his 3rd home run as he was intentionally walked. Rendon capitalized with the runner at 1st as he hit a double past the outfield that allowed Trout to score. The Cubs would get a runner on in the 9th as Turner singled and Marino Valaquez pinch ran and stole 2nd. Contreras and Baez proceed to get quick outs. Happ continued his impressive world series as he plated a double to score the runner but the Cubs could not get closer losing 7-4.
The Cubs and Angels will suit back up for game 4 tomorrow night. The Angels will run out Jose Urena; The Cubs brass were not forthcoming with a starter for game 4 only stating that they will decide between Puk and Darvish the morning of the game.
