Cardinals split mini series with Blue Jays

The Cardinals split their mini 2 game series with the Blue Jays in Toronto losing game one in walkoff fashion, but then bouncing back to take the quick finale with a 6-0 shutout.

Cards will pack up and head to Miami for a 4 game weekend series with the Marlins.

Jack Flaherty to IL with pulled groin

The Cardinals have placed Jack Flaherty on the 15 day IL due to a pulled groin. Flaherty left in the 3rd inning of his start in Toronto due to the injury.

Austin Gomber was recalled from Memphis to fill the rotation spot.

Cardinals activate Funkhouser from IL, option Leiter

The Cardinals have activated ace Kyle Funkhouser from the 15 day IL and he'll be back in the rotation for the Miami series. Funkhouser was on the IL with a strained oblique.

Jack Leiter was optioned to Memphis to make room. Leiter was chosen over Gomber as Leiter was roughed up in his last start and the front office thought it may be best to let Leiter pitch in Memphis for a while as he hasn't surpassed AA ball in his young career.

          The Amazins

Panic Time in NY? Mets Swept Again, Have Lost 12 in a Row
          August 7, 2024

The Mets went winless over their six game home stand, their latest sweep coming at the hands of the Nationals. The sweep included a devastating loss in game 2. Saturday night saw the Mets battle back to tie the game at 3 in the bottom of the 8th, only for an error by LF Michael Conforto to allow the Nationals to take back the lead in the 9th and win 4-3.

The Mets (68-51) will get a day off before heading to Saint Louis to take on the Cardinals (59-58).

The amazing thing is that the Mets still have the best record in the majors, even after having lost 12 in a row. However, I think that has more to do with the lack of "great" teams in baseball this year. One could have argued the Mets were in a class by themselves this season, but that argument has lost validity.

Unfortunately, the trade deadline has passed. The Mets did little except to move on from a piece of their rotation, and while RHP Agustin Aponte has been solid so far in the bullpen, the Mets are winless since his arrival. This is the team the Mets will head to the postseason with, although that is no longer a foregone conclusion. The Mets lead in the division is down to 5 games for the first time since June. In fact, they actually have the worst record within the division at 23-32.

              Milwaukee Brewers 10/4/2021
Game 3 Brewers vs Red 1-1
Brett Anderson gets the nod. A 3.04 ERA with a 12-9 record this season, he's hoping for plenty of groundballs as he typically pitches to contact.
A quiet first lead to Nick Senzels second homerun of the series in the 2nd inning. A sinker that sank but Nick Senzel got out the pitching wedge and sent it to the cheap seats. Another run in the 3rd gave Cincy a 2-0 lead. Sonny Gray was dealing and had a perfect game through 5.
Fast forward to the 6th and Eric Sogard got Milwaukee their first base hit in the bottom of that 6th inning, but nothing more came of it. Their second hit of the game showed promise with a 2 out double by Keston Hiura but again nothing to show for it. Going to the 9th, Milwaukee only had 3 hits in total with 2 being by Eric Sogard, who got Sonny Gray out of the game after 8.1 pitched. Again though Sogard got to 1st and 1st is where he'd remain as pinch hitter Khris Davis struckout on a slider, low and away.
Amir Garret came into close the game and gave all the Reds fans quite the scare allowing a hit to Yelich after getting Cain out on a grounder. Then Semien walked to put runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out. Hiura came up and hit a blooper to RF loading the bases with 1 out. But there was no spectacular comeback for the home fans as Josh Bell popped out and Narvaez struck out to end the game with the bases loaded. Cincinnati takes a 2-1 lead in the series heading into tomorrows matchup between Jovanny Walker and Ben Woodruff who will pitch to try and extend the series for Milwaukee.
If Walker can half way replicate Grays numbers of tonight. 8.1 innings, 12K's, 0 walks, 2 hits we can safely expect the series to end.

                Mets Report

                Sweep in St. Louis

The Mets took the three games pretty easily against the Cardinals. With 5 xbh from the team ( 4 doubles and a homerun) and 7 1/3 strong innings from Jacob deGrom who gave up just a solo run while striking out 7 earned his fourth win of the year in the 5-1 victory.

In game two Noah Syndergaard went just 6 innings, but the good news is he only gave up one run and the pen closed it out. Ken Giles finished it off with his 10th save of the year in a 4-2 win for New York.

In the final game Marcus Stroman went 8 solid innings giving up zero runs. And the team only up by just 2 the team put up four runs in the 9th to secure the win, 6-0.

Injury news Mychal Gives who had to be taken out of the first game of the series complaining of elbow pain was placed on the 10 day IL with what was classified as a Sprained Ligament.

In San Diego up against the Padres the Mets dropped the first game in a 3-2 loss. Mackenzie Gore kept the Mets guessing all game. In route to his 3rd win of the year in 7 innings of work while striking out 5.

in game 2 the Mets got a solid outing from Thomas Szapucki who went 7 innings
He did give up 3 runs on 4 hits and also struck out 7. He got plenty of offensive assistance with 5 xbh, in there George Springer supplied a double and homerun and three RBI in the 7-3 win for New York.

In game 3 the Padres jumped in front in the first inning with a solo shot from Fernando Tatis Jr. The Mets took the lead in the 3rd. And in the 6th the Friars tied it up on a rbi sinle from Eric Hosmer. In the seventh the Mets jumped back in front on a solo shot from Jordan Lupow who was starting to give J.D. Davis a break. The pen for New York stood strong and preserved the victory for deGrom, his 5th of the year in the 3-2 win.

The Mets head back home 3 vs Arizona (16-13) and 3 against the Phillies. Noah Syndergaard looks to continue his return to form in the first game vs the Diamondbacks, who counter with With Chris Bassett (1-1).

                  Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

Cubs-Cardinals Rivalry Set to Renew For first time in 2024

The Cubs headed south to St. Louis for their first match up against the Cardinals. The Cardinals have been a disappointment the last few years. In 2020 they sold off a lot of pieces and looked to rebuild; the sentiment last year was that they were ready to turn the corner but failed to produce and finished near the bottom of the standings in the Central. The 2024 season brought new optimism but the results have been more of the same through 39 games. In the off season St. Louis added to their rotation as Snell and Glasnow were signed away from the Rays. but pitching has not been their problem as the Cardinals have continued to fail at the plate as their youngsters have not produced. Entering the series the Cardinals sit at the bottom of the central with a 15-24 record. In the first game JB Bukauskas would get his first start with the Cubs as he faced Michael Baird. The Cards were looking for a spark in the first and the game started off in a testy mood as Baird ran a fastball inside and struck Kris Bryant on the first pitch of the game. The move would backfire through as Rizzo would avenge his teammate by tacking the second pitch to dead center for a home run. Oscar Colas finished the 1st by also hitting a home run. The Cardinals were able to get back into things as they added runs against Bukauskas in the 2nd and 3rd inning. The Cubs were able to add to their lead in the 4th but the Cardinals come back by adding 3 against JB in the 7th The last few innings were a rollercoaster as the Cardinals took a 8-7 lead in the 8th after Card Edwards Jr got into a based loaded jam with no outs. Harrison Bader drove in the lead taking run on a perfect suicide squeeze. The Cubs were able to ty the game in the 9th with a RBI double by Danny Santana. Clase was able to hold serve in the 9th to send it to extras. The Cubs would put the game away when they loaded the bases for Willson Contreras; he would end up breaking the Cardinals will with a grand slam as the Cubs survived in the 12-8 hitting clinic.

In the 2nd game the score would remain low as the Cardinals were able to win 2-1 on a Dylan Carlson home run in the 1st inning. Puk was on the mound and went on to pitch 6 innings but the Cubs offense could not contend with Jack Flaherty as he allowed only 1 run.

Adonis Medina would get the start in the final game of the series against
Blake Snell. Medina started off the track in the 4th when he allowed the 8th and 9th hitters to get on. After a RBI single broke the 0-0 tie, Tyler O’Neil put things out of reach with a 3 run home run. The Cubs would only manage 1 hit as Snell went 8 innings and struck out 11. The Cardinals fans were upset as he was not allowed to pitch the 9th to go for the 1 hit shutout but the Cubs would still go quietly in the shutout loss.

Cardinals and Marlins split 4 game weekend series

In what should be no surprise to anyone given how the NLDS went last year, the Cardinals and Marlins split their 4 game series over the weekend in Miami.

The teams alternated wins with the Cardinals winning Friday and Sunday, while the Marlins won Thursday and Saturday.

Saturday's loss was frustrating as Kyle Funkhouser pitched his first game after returning from the IL and was searching for his first win of the season and looked to be on his way, until again the bullpen was unable to hold a lead and took the loss. Richard Rodriguez was tagged with the loss after giving up a 3 run homerun in the bottom of the 8th, but the lead was blown by Zack Burdi who ended his day allowing 4 runs while recording one out in the 8th. The Cardinals led 5-1 going into the bottom of the 8th, but ended up losing 6-5.

Sunday was a better day, as Austin Gomber got the ball after being recalled from Memphis when Flaherty got injured and Leiter optioned down. Gomber went 7 innings allowing 2 runs on 8 scattered hits and struck out 5. He picked up his first win as Jordan Hicks pitched a perfect 8th and Roberto Osuna a perfect 9th to preserve the 6-2 victory.

J.J. Bleday continues to be a nightmare for pitchers as he has now hit safely in 11 straight games and has homered in his last 3 games. On the flip side, Nolan Gorman went the entire series (played 3 of 4 games) and failed to record a hit and is now looking at 6 straight games of being hitless.

The Cardinals are off on Monday as they head home to prepare for the Dodgers who come in for a Tuesday thru Thursday 3 game series.

Cardinals activate Juan Fabregas from IL

The Cardinals activated OF Juan Fabregas from the 10 Day IL on Monday. Fabregas was placed on the IL due to a mild knee sprain. He will be back in the lineup starting Tuesday night.

Jhon Torres was optioned back to Memphis to make room for the returning Fabregas.

Im at a loss. What the heck do I do with Jeff McNeil. I really want him to succeed but for some reason I cant hit with him. I had zero issues with him last year (19') but hes just killing me. I dont wanna give up on him, but the frustration with him is making me try way to hard with him and fail even harder.

Trade him? Send him down (has plenty of options)? I have a kid in the minors who I just drafted last season whos already 22 years old, 75 overall (C potential) but a pretty decent contact hitter (ratings wise) but hes not on my 40 man, which I have only one spot left for.. ugh.

MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

(Note: When I scout I like to choose a random theme. This year I looked up random pro athletes that played baseball and assigned them a draftable player. Then in the office I edit that player to look like the and change their name.)

The Dodgers 2020 MLB Draft came to end with the front office doing what they set out to do. For the second year in a row the Dodgers went heavy on pitchers after selecting a position player.

                        - 3B Curt Edmondson: The 19 year old R/R has the tools to eventually take over third base duties from Justin Turner if he develops as projected.
                        - The Dodgers selected 4 starting pitchers.
20 year old Patrick Mahomes R/R 71 ovr 90 po
19 year old Mason Murphy L/L 70 ovr 77 po
21 year old Bryan Rockwell L/L 60 ovr 81 po

I had zero issues with him last year (19') but hes just killing me. I dont wanna give up on him, but the frustration with him is making me try way to hard with him and fail even harder.

Trade him? Send him down (has plenty of options)? I have a kid in the minors who I just drafted last season whos already 22 years old, 75 overall (C potential) but a pretty decent contact hitter (ratings wise) but hes not on my 40 man, which I have only one spot left for.. ugh.

You have a few options to try and shake a slump.

                          1. Change up your approach at the plate. This more applies to directional hitting, but can work for zone hitting too. If playing directional, try different influences, see what works. You can also work a few more contact swing in earlier counts.

                          2. Sometimes the issue isn't the player, but me (or possibly you in this case). You've already mentioned you're pushing too hard. I find often when I break these slumps, it's when I'm not thinking about breaking the slump. A few ways you can fool yourself into not thinking about it: Mix up his spot in the order. Skip batting intro cutscenes for a game to help you lose track of who is at bat. Pause and toss on some music when he comes to the plate.

                          3. If things get drastic, and you're ok with making player edits, try editing the players swing to a swing you feel more compatible with. This can sometimes make all the difference. Think of it like a player retooling their swing.

#2 is the one that gets me most often. Well said.

Agreed 100%. #3 gets me a bit too with a few players. Last year, I couldn't catch up to the ball with Baby Vlad for the longest time...edited his stance a little bit, and all of the sudden couldn't miss.

This year, with the Mariners, the same thing was happening with Kyle Lewis on my M's...Instead of changing anything though, I just adjusted my approach with him. Went from sub-Mendoza line first 2 months, to hitting around .250 with a .325-ish OBP and around 20 HR's at the start of August. A bit easier to learn how your players play when you play every game.

                                Cardinals drop series to Dodgers

The Cardinals (12-13) have dropped another series to begin the 2027 season and are now 1 game under .500 and trail the Central Division leading Reds by 3 games as we wind down the first full month of baseball.

The Cardinals won the series opener behind a strong pitching performance from Junior Fernandez who went 7 1/3 innings allowing 1 run on 5 hits and earning 7 strikeouts. The bullpen was able to secure the 7-1 victory by allowing zero runs on just 1 hit and 1 walk. Juan Fabregas returned to the lineup in a big way going 3 for 3 with 2 homeruns, a double and driving in 6 runs. The other run was scored via an error by Mitch Walding of the Dodgers.

Games 2 and 3 though weren't much fun as Dakota Hudson was decent going 6 innings allowing 4 runs on 8 hits but the offense was shutdown Sixto Sanchez. Thursday afternoon's series finale wasn't any better with Michael Wacha getting roughed up for 5 runs over 6 innings. The offense put up 4 runs in the 4th when McKay (2 run homerun), Fabregas and Bleday went back to back to back off of Shane Bieber. But that would be it and the bullpen would take 5-4 deficit and increase it to 9-4 before all was said and done.

The Cardinals remain home as the Mets will travel to St.Louis for a 3 game weekend series.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
