Any idea why you don’t have to pay the full value of the contract when you release someone with multiple years left on his contract? I released Cano with four years left at $24 million per year, but but I’m only having to pay him for three years and the amount I have to pay decreases every year

Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024
Cubs, Bryant Call Off Negotiation Talks.
The Cubs have been quiet in trade talks as they choose to not fiddle with a roster that has won 3 straight championships; the big news coming from Wrigley stemmed from the Cubs and Kris Bryant’s camp agreeing to suspend contract negotiations until after the season. Bryant opted into the final year of his deal that is paying him over 30 million a year but the two sides failed to get a deal done in spring training. The Cubs still pursued getting a deal done sooner rather than later but Bryant has announced that he has informed his agent that he will not participate in contract talks until after the postseason. Bryant has normally been rock solid but has seen his production dip this year though he has been on an upswing of late. Bryant's agent took a bombastic attitude with the media saying his client would not be taking a hometown discount but Bryant’s tone was more subtle tone, “I've made it known that i'd like to spend my whole career in Chicago but now is not the time to discuss it. There was a lot of speculation back in 2020 about keeping this group together and it restarted this year - I think it contributed how things went earlier in the year.. I turned the corner a bit once I stopped worrying about it.” The Cubs will again have to face a hard decision on what to do with their core as Contreras, Baez and Schwarber all have contracts up in the next 2 seasons and will be looking at a final big pay day in their 30s
Cubs host Diamondbacks
The Cubs were able to get take 2 of 3 from the NL West leading Dbacks but missed the sweep due to a poor performance out of the bullpen in game 1. Bryailyn Marquez t had another great start as he went 6.1 innings and struck out 13 on just 2 hits. The Cubs were leading 2-0 in 6th as Marquez gave up a hit and a walk when he was removed from the game for Kyle Ryan with one out. Ryant allowed another base hit but kept the damage to 1 run. In the 8th Rowan Wick would give the game away as he walked 2 and gave up a single to load the bases. Wick would miss on a 3-1 pitch as Marte was able to drive in 2 to put the Dbacks up. The Cubs would tie it up but the d'backs could ultimately win it in the 12th. Wick has struggled as he has a 4.62 Era. The Cubs made a roster move prior to the 2nd game of the series at Wick was demoted to triple A Iowa as Dellin Betance would get the call up. Betance started the year in Baltimore but was traded in June as a reclamation project and sent to the farm to find his control again. Betance posted a 8.63 ERA in 24 appearances with Baltimore but has able to post a 2.75 ERA in 24 innings at Iowa. The Cubs brass framed the move as a way to bring in a refresher arm during a long stretch of consecutive games but many wonder if Wick will get a chance to return to the show and if his time with Chicago has come to an end. The Cubs were able to win the next two games of the series 8-1 and 5-2 as Puk went 7 innings and gave up only a run and Kyle Hendricks got the no decision after the bullpen gave up the lead in the 7th but responded in the bottom half of the inning.
Cubs Continue Long Grid of Consecutive Games
The Cubs would finish their home stand with 4 games against the Reds before finishing this stretch of games against the Pirates and Cards to end July.
The Cubs only managed a split of the series against the Reds as they won the middle games. The bats struggled in a 1-2 loss as Adonis Medina pitched solid and he worked the no decision leaving the game tied 1-1 after 6. Continuing a current theme, the once lights out bullpen again gave up runs as the cubs fell 1-2. Jacob Degrom would ensure that the bullpen would not let him down as he went the distance striking out 7 in a complete game as the Cubs won 8-1. The Cubs lineup has waned down the stretch of july but continue to excel against lefties as Jose Abreu went 3 for 4 with a home run. The Cubs were able to win the 3rd game 5-4; Chicago had the early lead but a 3 run home run by Cody Bellinger left Marquez with the no decision. The Cubs were able to take the lead back with a solo home run by Javier Baez. The game also saw Kris Bryant hit his 299th home run. The Cubs would go on to lose the final game 2-6 as Colas gave up 4 runs and the cubs couldn’t muster any offense.
The Cubs would travel to play the Pirates next in another 4 game series. The Pirates sit in 3rd in the central as they are 2 games under .500 but have a glimmer of hope to reach the playoffs as they sit 6 games back for the final wildcard spot. The Cubs would gain the lead in the 3rd on a 3 run home run by Anthony Rizzo and that was all that the Cubs needed as AJ Puk would go the distance for the shutout as the Cubs took game 1, 4-0. Kyle Hendricks would not be able to turn things around for himself in the second game. Hendricks has stumbled out the 2nd half blocks and got roughed up for his worst performance of 2024 giving up 7 runs in 4.1 innings. The cubs would make it closer but would fall 4-7. The Cubs were able to win a close one in the 3rd game as they were powered by Kyle Schwarber in the 2-1 victory. Schwarber was able to go deep in the 2nd. Schwarber has had a season to forget so far as he missed 2 months with a knee injury and hasn’t looked right since. The left fielder was hitting .244 when he came back in early July and has seen his line drop to .223. DeGrom was able to earn his 13th win going 7 innings and striking out 7 on 3 hits. The win is No. 13th for DeGrom and ties him with Hendricks for the NL lead in that department. The Cubs and Pirates would split the series as the Pirates won the August 1st game 1-7 as Medina gave up 6 runs in 5 innings of work.
Wick / Cubs Part Ways
After the 3rd game of the Pittsburgh series, the Cubs announced that they were shipping Rowan Wick to the Marlins. Wick was demoted earlier in the month but posted a solid ERA in AAA Iowa. Wick will join the Marlins for the rest of the year and is likely to be moved into a set up role for a Miami club that is fighting for a playoff spot, currently tied for the 2nd wildcard spot. The Cubs were able to get two lower minor leaguers.
The Cubs ended up going 18-8 in July; Kris Bryant was able to win player of the month honors as he posted a .370 batting line with 10 home runs; Bryant had posted a .198 average in June. Christopher Morel also won rookie of the month honors as the infielder hit over .300 in limited playing time. The Cubs will suit up again on August 2nd with 3 games in St. Louis; the Cubs will have a quick 2 game series against the twins in between off days before facing off against the Brewers who currently trail Chicago by 6.5 games in the central lead.Comment

Cards take 2 of 3 from Cubs. Head to Boston to close out month of June
The Cardinals took 2 out of 3 from the Cubs in Chicago and now sit 6 games behind the division leading Reds as the month of June closes out. The Cardinals will travel to Boston for a 3 game weekend series with the Red Sox.
The Cardinals won on Tuesday and Wednesday, but dropped the series finale after Jack Flaherty for the 2nd straight start was unable to get out of the 4th inning allowing 6 runs on 7 hits, walking 4 and striking out 4. He also gave up 2 homeruns. Giovanny Gallegos was again stellar in an inning eater role going 4 innings allowing just 1 run on 3 hits and striking out 7 over those 4 innings.
The first game of the series saw newly acquired Gwang-Hyun Kim make his Cardinal debut and was impressive going 7 complete innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and striking out 11. Michael Wacha won his start Wednesday night going 6 innings allowing just 1 run on 3 hits and striking out 3. The bullpen was solid this entire series giving up just a total of 3 runs over 9 innings of work.
Juan Fabregas continues to put up MVP numbers as he was 9 for 12 in the series with 3 homeruns, 3 doubles, a triple and drove in 10 runs in the series. On the flip side, Brendan McKay continues to struggle at the dish playing just two games of the series, he was 0 for 5 with 2 walks.
As stated the Cardinals will head to Boston to take on the Red Sox who are in the midst of a heated AL East battle with the Rays, Yankees and Blue Jays. All 4 teams are separated by just 3 games for first place with the Red Sox being just 1 game back of the Rays.
Cardinals place Cristobol Lorenzo on 10 Day IL
The Cardinals have placed back up catcher Cristobol Lorenzo the 10 Day IL due to a strained pectoral suffered in Thursday's series finale. He is expected back within 2 weeks.
Zach Jackson, who just returned to Memphis after a lengthy IL stay was recalled from Memphis Thursday night to fulfill the vacant roster spot.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

It’s August 20th and Pete Alonso is running away with the triple crown after a massive hot streak that gave him an 8 point lead for the batting title. Even with the lead every at bat feels like it’s do or die. Just had an 0 for 4 game, then we had an offensive explosion in the 7th and 8th innings and he finished 2 for 6 and maintained his averageComment

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread
Trying to get one more season in before 21 is released. I’m playing with the giants. No offense if you are a San Fran fan , because I’am. This team has literally no one I trust in the bullpen. Through April I already had six blown saves and have what I would consider my six, seven, and eight starters in my bullpen lol. I made a trade for Barns and Workman from Boston. Should really change things.Comment

Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024
Cubs End Long Stretch of Games in St. Louis.
The Cubs ended the first weekend in August with a 3 game series against the Cardinals. St. Louis had loaded up on pitching this past offseason but their lineup continued to let them down as they have had another lackluster campaign. The Cards currently sit 5th in the division and are likely to have a losing record for the 3rd straight year. St. Louis made a deal in the deadline as they acquired Miguel Andjuar from the Athletics for Harrison Bader and Rangel Ravelo. Andjuar is having a career year but was expendable as the A’s needed more depth as they looked to contend for a wild card spot.
The Cubs would blank the Cards in all 3 games as they were able to win close games and a rout. In the first game the Cubs were able to get on the board when Javier Baez reached first in the 4th inning and was able to get to 2nd on his 13th stolen base of the year. The Cubs were able to move Baez to 3rd but had 2 outs before a wild pitch allowed the only run to score. Braiyln Marquez was able to get the win going 6 innings and striking out 11 while spreading 5 hits.
In the second game Kyle Hendricks was able to get past his recent slide as he went 7 innings and allowed no runs in a 6-0 win. Kris Bryant started the game with a lead off home run, his 21st of the year and 300th in his career. Even though the Cubs were the away team, the Cardinals fans in attendance still gave the 3rd basemen a standing ovation to honor the milestone; Bryant was thankful for this after the game, ‘The rivalry against the Cards and Cubs runs deep but it shows that the cardinals fans are all class and overall love baseball, it would have been nice to hit that home run at home but it was special to still get honored in that way in a opposing ball park.”
In the 3rd game Oscar Colas was a one man show as he won the game and drove in the only run of the game. Colas was able to get the complete game shutout in a 1-0 game as his solo shot to right field in the 4th was the deciding factor.
Top Central Teams Face Off
The Cubs would have book end off days as they play 2 in the Twin Cities against the AL Central leading Twins. The Twins are one of the top teams in the AL and have been led by former Cub Ian Happ. Happ has succeeded with being able to play full time splitting time between right field and DH. Happ has cooled some but is still in the running for AL MVP with a line of .283 - 33 HR - 86 RBI - .603 SLG. The Cubs were able to hold the slugger in check as he went 1 for 8 in the quick series. In game 1 the Cubs left handed batters feasted against German Marquez as Rizzo, Colas and Santana all went yard, with Rizzo and Colas homering twice the Cubs made light work of the Twins starter who was only able to go 2 innings before Maeda was able to cool Chicago’s bat some. Puk was able to pitch solid in the 9-3 victory getting his 9th win of the year.
In the second game the Cubs decided to skip Degrom in the order and were able to pitch their own Marquez on full rest so that Degrom can start game 1 of the next series. Brailyn did not get the strike outs that he normally racks up but still got the W in the 5-1 game. Marquez gave up a run on 3 strikeouts as Willson Contreras and Oscar Colas homered.
The Cubs will have another day off as they return home to face the Brewers for 3 games.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread
Had the same thing going with Dan Vogelbach (Weird, right?) in year 1 of my Mariners franchise. Felt like I had to perform with every at bat...ended up losing the plate discipline that I'd had with him throughout the first 120 games of the season, and up falling off significantly in September. He still had the power, but his average dropped from .330 to .300. The cold streak ended up holding over through the playoffs, where he struggled mightily.
Keep pushing, but don't forget what got him there!Comment

Cardinals drop 2 of 3 to Red Sox
The Cardinals drop 2 games of their 3 game series with the Red Sox in Boston. The Cardinals pitching staff really just couldn't contain the high powered BoSox offense.
The Cardinals did win Saturday thanks to Dakota Hudson doing a great job thru 5 innings allowing just one run on 5 hits, but then the bullpen allowed things to get interesting as a 4-1 lead turned into a 4-3 lead, before the Red Sox hit into 3 ending inning double plays in 3 straight innings and Jordan Hicks sat down the side, 1,2,3 in the 9th for the save, the only 3 up/3 down inning for the Red Sox in the series.
The Cardinals will head home for a big 4 game series with the Central Division leading Reds. The Cardinals trail the Redlegs by 6 games at the moment so a sweep and they are right back in the thick of things. Get swept and it may be too late to overcome a 10 game deficit. At the very least, split and keep it at 6 games and gear up for the 2nd half of the season.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Top NL Central Teams Battle at Wrigley.
Chicago has been able to build on their lead in the Central to 6.5 games over the Brewers. Milwaukee still has the 2nd best record in the NL but are running out of time to end the Cubs dominance in the division. The Brewers have 9 games left against the Cubs as they will play the next 3 at Wrigley, a 3 game series in Wisconsin in 2 weeks and the final 3 in Milwaukee in the 2nd to last week of the regular season. . Adding to the level of difficulty, The Brewers will be without Christian Yelich (shoulder) and Keston Hiura (finger ligament) are out for several weeks but hope to be back during the last 1 or 2 of the season. The Cubs looked to capitalize on the short handed Brewers as taking 2 of 3 may all but assure a 5th consecutive division title. With having 2 days off the Cubs were able to stack their rotation for this series and will throw their best at Milwaukee with DeGrom, Hendricks and Oscar Colas on Sunday night.
In game 1, DeGrom would go against Michael Fulmer. The Cubs had a late scratch as Danny Santana would miss the next few games after having a tricep strain. The Cubs were able to get on the board in the 2nd when Kyle Schwarber lead off the bottom of the second with a solo home run. The Homer was the 11th for the lefty outfielder who has struggled since coming back from injury. Scharber has seen his average dip to .222 since July and some had question on whether the Cubs were ready to cut his playing time as they have given him over a month to return from injury but Santana’s injury will prevent a benching at least for a little while. The Cubs would add to the lead as Schwarber would go 2 for 5 and Rizzo went 3 for 4 to lead the Cubs hitters. DeGrom kept up his solid play as he went 7 innings and struck out 6 in the 6-1 victory.
In the second game, Freddy Peralta would face Kyle Hendricks. The Brewers again would only get less than 5 innings out of their starter as the Cubs 2, 3 hitters lead the way as Rizzo and Contreras both homered in the 6-2 victory. Hendricks was able to keep pace and win his 15th of the year, the same as Degrom.
In the 3rd game the Cubs would again get out the early lead as they lead 3-2. Oscar Colas would settle down after giving up 2 early runs and went 7 innings while striking out 11. The Cubs used a big 8 run 8th inning to propel them to a 11-2 victory and the series sweep. In the end the Brewers' weaknesses were apparent as none of their starters went more than 4.1 innings in the 3 contest and the Cubs were able to keep MVP candidate Omar Navarro in check as he went 1 for 11 in the series; Omar came in with a .308 batting line that ranked 3rd in the National League. The Cubs now are firmly in the lead over the Brewers by 9.5 games. And will finish up the home stand against the Cardinals and Pittsburgh.Comment

Cardinals drop 3 of 4 to Reds
The Cardinals had a prime opportunity to get back into the divisional race in a 4 game series with the Reds, but unfortunately dropped 3 of the 4 games and now find themselves 8 games back as the season approaches the unofficial half way mark (All-Star Game)
The Cardinals won the series opener on Monday, but that excitement was short lived as the Reds would take the final 3 games in fairly convincing fashion and expand what was a 6 game lead over the Cardinals into an 8 game lead.
The Cardinals offense was woeful in the final 3 games only managing to push across a total of 5 runs in those 3 games. The pitching wasn't much better as the Cardinals allowed 17 runs over the final 3 games of the series.
The Cardinals will remain home this weekend as they welcome the Yankees to St.Louis for a 3 game series.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Cardinals place Devon Snow on 10 Day IL
The Cardinals have placed starting backstop Devon Snow on the 10 Day IL due to a finger contusion. The Cardinals debated whether to place the 26 year old on the IL, but given the amount of games they are playing without an off day, they wanted to free up a roster spot to ensure they had 2 catchers at 100% for this run of games.
Snow is hitting .236 on the year with 9 homeruns and 31 RBI's. Snow was designated the primary backstop when the Cardinals non-tendered Andrew Knizner in this past offseason.
Zach Jackson has been moved to the starting role and journeyman backstop Austin Wynns has been recalled from Memphis to serve as the backup.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
