Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

    2023 Washington Nationals

Game One: Jesus Luzardo (5-6, 3.24) vs Josiah Gray (5-8, 3.35)

Enrique Hernandez hit a solo home run in the third to put the Nationals up 1-0, but Brian Anderson hit his own solo homer in the fifth and a two out, two run single in the ninth to give the Marlins a 3-1 victory. Josiah Gray was phenomenal, going seven innings and giving up a run on six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. He would end up with a no decision. Drew Mendoza made his major league debut at first, he struck out in the third and grounded out twice.

Game Two (Trevor Rogers 4-10, 4.63) vs Zach Davies (6-6, 3.39)
Lane Thomas started the scoring with a solo home run in the second, and the Nationals added three more in the third. The inning started with a walk to Keibert Ruiz, followed by a single from CJ Abrams. Brandon Nimmo struck out, but then Luis Garcia singled to score Ruiz, Kike Hernandez hit a sac fly, Joey Meneses singled and Gleyber Torres doubled to put Washington up 4-0. Miami would get a run back in the fourth when Jesus Sanchez hit a line shot that went right past Luis Garcia at second and just under Kike Hernandez’s glove in center to go all the way to the wall. Sanchez would end up at third and then score when Brandon Belt singled. Brian Anderson would drive in another run on a fielder's choice. Jorge Soler would lead off the sixth with a solo home run, which would be the end for Xach Davies. Soler was going to be his last batter anyway, but the homer made taking him out that much more imperative. Drew Mendoza picked up his first career hit with a double off of Elieser Hernandez in the bottom of the sixth, and he would score when Keibert Ruiz singled. This scene would repeat itself in the eighth, as with two outs, Mendoza hit another double and scored when Ruiz followed up with a double of his own. Trevor Rosenthal would come in to close the game and for the 22nd time this year, he would get the save.

Game Three: Pablo Lopez (6-6, 3.54) vs Cade Cavalli (5-9, 3.98)
Keibert Ruiz came through again, driving in the first run with a single after a fantastic at bat. Lane Thomas was aggressive in the basepaths and scored from second. The Marlins rallied in the third, scoring two on a Yolmer Sanchez double. They added two more runs via the solo home run, one in the fourth by Bryan de la Cruz and one in the sixth by Jesus Sanchez. The Nationals were able to get a run back in the seventh when Drew Mendoza hit a double and scored on a Brandon Nimmo single; but they could not capitalize on a two on and one out situation. Washington seemed too anxious at the plate, especially Joey Meneses, who may be in need of a day off as he has been playing nearly everyday. Sean Doolittle had to leave the game in the eighth what appears to be a groin injury*. The Nationals had more opportunities in the eighth and ninth, but could not plate another run. The ninth inning was especially frustrating; with a man on first and second and one out, Joey Meneses singled to right. Brandon Nimmo rounded third but decided not to risk being thrown out at the plate, but Luis Garcia was already halfway to third and had to go back to second, where he was thrown out. Lane Thomas would strike out on a pitch in the dirt to end the game.
*Sean Doolittle should be good to go without missing any additional time

The Nationals (45-50) are disappointed following the series loss against Miami, but there are some positives to take away. Drew Mendoza picked up three hits in the series, all doubles that led to runs, and he made great contact in several at bats. The hope is he can perform while Brandon Drury is out and can also give Joey Meneses some days off from playing the field.

Washington now travels to Philadelphia for four games prior to the All-Star break.

      Game 2 results: Toronto 3, Detroit 0
      Win: Mike Soroka (8-5)
      Loss: Tarik Skubal (4-4)
      Save: Jordan Romano (34)

      Game 3 results: Toronto 6, Detroit 5
      Win: Alek Manoah (12-4)
      Loss: Michael Lorenzen (5-8)
      Save: Jordan Romano (35)
Danny Jansen belted a home run for Toronto and Vlad drove in a pair. For Detroit, they were trailing 6-3 going into the bottom of the ninth, but made things interesting after a two run shot by Eric Hasse cut the margin to 6-5. That would be as close as the Tigers would get, however.

Cubs sweep the pirates to improve to 45-24 Bellinger hit a walk off single as the cubs scored 2 in the 9th to secure the sweep. Mervis hit another homer and had an RBI groundout. He’s at 5HR and 10RBI in his short time up in the majors. After the game the cubs have traded Edwin Rios to the Mariners for Robert Perez Jr and have recalled Christopher Morel who is .316 with 6 homers in Iowa. Morel will be playing 3B against righties while Wisdom will play 3B against lefties.

The 2023 home run derby was won by Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros. The Blue Jays had two representatives in the event in the forms of Vlad Junior and Brandon Belt, but both were eliminated in the first round. As for the All Star game itself, the American League defeated the National League 9-0. Jose Altuve of the Astros belted a three run shot in the bottom of the 5th to get the scoring started and then the AL piled on six more in the bottom of the 8th. Toronto's first series following the All Star break will be back at Rogers Centre against the Arizona Diamondbacks

              2023 Pittsburgh Pirates 04/20-04/23

              Overall Record:15-8 (1st NL Central/2.5 over Cubs)

              Game Results:
              Game 1
              Pirates:2
              Reds:1

              Game 2:
              Reds-4
              Pirates-2

              Game 3:
              Reds-6
              Pirates-1

              Game 4:
              Reds-7
              Pirates-4

Pirates start a new steak, a losing one

The Pittsburgh Pirates steak ended at 12 wins after their 2-1 victory against the Reds. With the victory, trouble could be seen in the horizon as Pittsburgh scored two in the first inning (Oneil Cruz HR) but didnt score after that.

The offense continued to struggle throughout the series despite getting a decent amount of hits. Aside from getting hits, a MLB offense needs to stream them together and score runs off those hits. Unfortunately, the Pirates couldnt do that against what is possibly on paper (and standings) the worst team in baseball. Pittsburgh didnt score more than two runs in any game against the Reds aside from game four which saw desperation runs come in the bottom of the 9th. Those runs were too little to late as the Reds took game four 7-4 and the series victory, three games to one.

Pittsburgh will look to bounce back as they stay home to face a tough test against the probable best team in baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers (18-5).

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

Prior to our series with Arizona, we have made a trade.
                To Pittsburgh:
C Alejandro Kirk, P Yimi Garcia, OF Benny Montgomery (prior trade acquisition with Colorado)
Toronto: C Henry Davis, P David Bednar
Although Kirk had been great defensively, he was only batting a little over .200 on the season and the Jays figured he could use a change of scenery. Coming back is Henry Davis, who is arguably one of the top prospects in baseball. But the big prize in this trade is David Bednar, who had racked up 25 saves so far this season prior to the trade. With this move, Toronto clears some more budget space and also bolsters up their bullpen.

Final from Game 1 of 3 against the Dbacks:
                  Arizona 5, Toronto 1
                  Win: Miguel Castro (4-2)
                  Loss: Kevin Gausman (10-3)
                  Save: Austin Adams (1)
Toronto trailed by just one run going into the 9th, but former Jay Lourdes Gurriel Jr put the game away with a bases loaded double to plate three runs and essentially put the game away. Newest Jay David Bednar came on in the 7th and pitched a scoreless inning in his Toronto debut

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

At the end of the month the Beavers sit at 51-55 currently 15 games back of the First place Yankees. I decided to tear it all down and trade away most of the guys to try and get younger and more talented. Currently we are 3.5 back in the Wild card so there's still a chance but I'm looking towards the future. Corey Knebel and Willians Astudillo were my two All Stars. We extended Drew Jackson for 1 year with a club option for a second for 2.72M.

                        Trades:
Sent Steven Brault to the Twins for Dennis Santana: was offered the trade and Santana was having a solid year.
We then sent Tim Beckham and Michael Pineda to the Cardinals for Ivan Herrera and Packy Naughton. We needed a catcher and Herrera was being blocked by Contreras and Packy was depth.
Next trade we sent Miguel Sano and Juan Lagares to the Astros for Forrest Whitley. Wanted to take a shot on Whitely and Sano was having a solid season.
Next trade we sent Alec Mills, Jonathan Villar, and Scott Manea to the Padres for Jose Azocar and Nick Martinez. Was looking to get younger and faster in the Outfield, Azocar was being blocked. Martinez gives us a solid veteran presence in the rotation with a two more years in the contract.
Next trade we sent Jose Alvarez, Anthony benboom, and Darien Nunez for Keston Hiura. Main piece in this was Alvarez and the others were throw ins for Keston. Milwaukee didn't want him anymore and figured give him a shot.
Next trade we sent Corey Knebel and Phil Gosselin to the Angels for D'Shawn Knowles. Trading our All Star closer for a solid Outfield prospect.
Next trade we sent Chris Archer and Shane Greene to the Giants for Luis Gonzalez. More young talent for the Outfield. Giants have a lot of Outfielders and figured he would be the most expendable.
Next trade we sent Dee Strange Gordon and JT Riddle to the Dodgers for Justin Bruhl and Andre Jackson. We get back two solid young arms and the dodgers get Gordon who was having a solid season.

                        Lineup as of 8/1:

                        CF: Jose Azocar
                        SS: Drew Jackson
                        LF: Nomar Mazara
                        DH: Keston Hiura
                        RF: Luis Gonzalez
                        C: Ivan Herrera
                        2B: Isan Diaz
                        3B: Cadyn Grenier
                        1B: Lewin Diaz

                        Bench:
                        Monte Harrison
                        Nick Banks
                        Willians Astudillo
                        Toby Welk
                        Ford Proctor

                        2: Nick Martinez
                        3: Jace Vines
                        4: Andre Jackson
                        5: Daniel Mengden

                        Bullpen

                        LRP: Zac Lowther
                        MRP: Jorge Acala

                        SU: Archie Bradley
                        CL: Spencer Patton

                        Transactions:
Optioned Drew Rom to Triple A and called up Zac Lowther. Claimed Ford Proctor from the Giants. Claimed Spencer Howard from the Rangers. Designated Miles Mastrobuoni for assignment. Claimed Kolton Ingram from the Angels. Claimed Christian Pache from the Athletics .

                        Injuries:
                        Still nothing...

                        Beavers 2023 draft class:

1: Chad Levine 21 year old C potential Starting Pitcher from Michigan. Has high k per nines, sits in the high 80's. Could be in the rotation by next year.

2: Aaron Robles 18 year old C potential Center Fielder from Venezuela. Has solid hitting stats with contact in the 70's. Think he should be higher potential, fielding stats aren't great will probably be in left. ETA 2025

3: Miles Dominguez 21 year old C potential First Basemen from Cuba. He looks a lot like Lewin Diaz stat wise just not a great fielder. ETA 2025-2026

4: Luis Martinez 22 year old B Potential Shortstop from the Dominican Republic. Has solid fielding stats could be in the majors soon just from that. ETA 2024

5: Desmond Stallings 19 year old C potential Relief Pitcher from New York. Has solid stats needs more development ETA 2025.

6: Ray Turner 18 year old C potential Relief Pitcher from Texas. Another solid young arm, has very low walks per nine. ETA 2025-2026

7: Abraham Zamora 20 year old B Potential Shortstop from the Dominican Republic. Definitely a project guy ETA 2026.

Looking forward to the draft going forward and will probably start making some moves as we get closer to the end of July

                        Offensive Studs:
Surprisingly Cadyn Grenier is leading the way with a .290 average after he took over for Riddle at Second Base at the beginning of the month. He also was the Rookie of the month! Tim Beckham leads the team with 16 home runs and Dee Strange Gordon leads the league with 23 stolen bases. Drew Jackson has also been solid hitting.282 with 17 Stolen bases.

                        Offensive Duds:
Miguel Sano hasn't been great with the average hitting .223 but with 12 home runs. Villar hasn't been great since the beginning of the season down to .236. On the Bench Lagares and Riddle have been struggling a bit as well.

                        Pitching Studs:
Michael Pineda is still my best pitcher at 2.73 with 85 innings pitched going 6-5 so far. Archer and Mengden also have both been solid. In the pen: Alvarez, Bradley, and Patton have been good and Corey Knebel has been nasty with a 1.63 Era and 15 saves.

                        Pitching Duds:
Alec Mills is starting to fall off with 4.95 Era and Drew Rom hasn't been able to find it since his debut outing. In the pen Brault in the long relief hasn't been good and Smith and Greene are struggling as well. Will definitely look to upgrade the pitching soon.

                        Injuries:
                        Still nothing...

                        Transactions:
Claimed Jackson Fraizer from the Rangers and released Jose Herrera. Claimed Miles Mastrobuoni from the Cubs and released Tim Kennelly.

Using the Braves and just finished up the Cincinnati series in April. Sitting at a 10-3 record. The Padres absolutely kicked my butt the whole series. Going against Cincy we swept them in large part to Ozzie Albies who went 11-11 with 5 home runs and 9 rbi in the series. Never in my show life have I had anyone put on a show like he did. 3 of his home runs were to give us in the lead after the 7th inning.

Pitching on the other hand has been suspect. Strider is on fire.....Shuster, Dodd, and Elder are getting rocked early and often, but we have been able to out hit everyone except those damn Padres. Kyle Wright comes back in 4 days and Fried is right behind him on day 5. That might help some. Then I think in game I'm going to give Soroka 2 more starts in Gwinett then pull him up. That will let me send Shuster, Dodd, and Elder back to Gwinett.

The Cardinals (36-27) dropped 2 games of a 3 game series against the Rangers in Arlington. The Cardinals are now just 1/2 game up on the Cubs in the NL Central.

The Cardinals won the series opener Monday night, but it was downhill from there. Jordan Montgomery had to leave in the 3rd inning of his start on Tuesday due to a strained finger and that put the bullpen in a bad spot the rest of the series giving how taxed they've been the past week or so. Jack Flaherty pitched well on Wednesday night, but lost 2-0 on two solo shots by Corey Seager as Jacob deGrom shut down the Cardinals bats with 14 strikeouts thru 8 innings.

Offensively the Cardinals are struggling, outside of Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado. There is no consistentcy amongst the other 7 bats in the lineup. Couple that with a bullpen that is taxed and shaky and the Cardinals are struggling to find ways to win ballgames.

The Cardinals get a much needed off day Thursday as they head home to face the Reds for a 3 game weekend series.

Has anyone finished a season with the Mets yet? You start the season projected to be $60 million over budget and I was taking a look at my projected 2024 payroll to see if I’ll have enough contracts coming off the books to make some off season moves. I noticed a few players that have club options for 2024 in real life have it as a guaranteed year in the game so I’m shedding less payroll than I anticipated. I did a test franchise and simmed to the offseason and they begin the off season already over budget and you can’t negotiate with anyone. One thing it will let you do is offer arbitration to eligible players instead of negotiating a contract with them so I was able to avoid losing any arbitration eligible players. It won’t let you renew any contracts for players that aren’t arbitration eligible yet, but if you turn that to auto it will let the cpu offer them contracts at their discretion. Then later in the off season it tells you that you can’t afford them and withdraws the offer but at that point you can manually renew their contract. By the end of the off season I could only afford to sign 68 players so I just wanted to give a warning to anyone using the Mets before you get blindsided in the off season. I’m only four games in to my franchise so I may rework some contracts and start my franchise over. It feels like the Wilpons bought the team back.

                                2023 Washington Nationals

Game One: Stephen Strasburg (8-6, 1.95) vs Joe Ross (7-3, 2.69)
Strasburg was dominant early, striking out 6 of the first 10 batters he faced, but the eleventh batter, Bryce Harper, hit a solo home run on a slurve that got way too much of the plate. Washington responded in the fifth; Anderson Tejeda doubled and advanced to third when Drew Mendoza grounded out. Tejeda then scored when CJ Abrams singled to right. The Phillies retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth following a Bruce Harper double and Rhys Hoskins home run. The ball was carrying all day long, and the Nationals had plenty of hard hit balls, but their lack of power meant that all these hard hit balls turned into fly outs, but for the power bats of Harper and Hoskins they resulted in home runs. That would end up being the difference in this one as the Phillies take game one, 3-1.

Game Two: MacKenzie Gore (7-7, 3.50) vs Martin Perez (5-4, 3.51)
The Nationals came into this game knowing they need to be more patient and disciplined at the plate. They have been too aggressive, swinging often and early in the counts and not letting the pitches come to them. The plan did not come to fruition early, as Martin Perez only threw 15 pitches through 1.1 innings before he left a cutter up in the zone that Gleyber Torres launched over the wall to put the Nats up 1-0. Edmundo Sosa would double and advance to third on a Daniel Robertson single, and then score when Rob Brantly grounded into a double play to tie the game. Brantly would make up for it in the fifth when he doubled to put men on second and third with only one out. Adam Engel would then double and Bryce Harper would homer to put the Phils up 5-1 and ruin MacKenzie Gore’s great outing. Engel would tack on another run with a solo homer in the seventh and that pretty much sums up this game for the Nationals, as even the role players in the Philly offense were making noise. Rhys Hoskins hit another home run in the eighth to make it 7-1, and that’s how this one ended. Martin Perez went the distance on about 80 pitches, as he was pounding the strike zone and the Nationals just did not work the counts all game long.

Game Three: Josiah Gray (5-8, 3.23) vs Ranger Suarez (4-8, 3.03)

Washington finally put their game plan to use: they showed more patience and restraint at the plate and were rewarded with a two run third inning. Victor Robles hit a one out single and advanced to second when Keibert Ruiz hit a weak ground ball to the pitcher. Kike Hernandez came through with a two out single to score Robles and Luis Garcia followed with a double to score Hernandez. That would be the only scoring in the game; Josiah Gray went 5 dominant innings of shutout baseball, giving up 2 hits and a walk while striking out 6. Victor Arano would go two innings, and Carl Edwards Jr and Trevor Rosenthal each went one inning to get the shutout. The Nationals had more opportunities to score but bounced into three double plays in the game. The Phillies kept Amed Rosario, Bruce Harper and Rhys Hoskins out of this game, and with JT Realmuto, Jean Segura, and Bryson Stott all being out with injuries, the Philly lineup resembled more of a AAA lineup than a major league team.

The rumor that the White Sox were shopping Andrew Vaughn and Lucas Giolito, and that Washington was interested in a package deal, was confirmed as the clubs agreed to a trade that sees 3B Ildemaro Vargas, SP Patrick Corbin and SS Samuel Infante going to the Southside. This is a definite win for the Nationals, and the White Sox seem like they are ready to start a slight rebuild as they are in fourth place in the AL Central and will likely miss the playoffs again. The Nationals also get out of paying Corbin the $23 million he was due for the season, despite the fact he was playing at AAA Rochester.

To make room for Andrew Vaughn, the Nationals sent Drew Mendoza back to AAA. He made quite an impression and will most likely be back at the MLB level at some point in his career.

Game Four: Zach Davies (7-6, 3,48) vs Noah Syndergaard (5-9, 3.58)
The Nationals had an early opportunity to score as they had bases loaded with two outs in the first but Lane Thomas could not come through, popping up to the first basemen to end the inning. The Phillies would get solo home runs from Alex Bohm in the first and Bryce Harper in the third. Scott Kingery would lead off the fourth with a bunt single, and would advance to third on a hit and run. Adam Engel then lined out to left to score Kingery. Washington would get a run in the sixth when Brandon Nimmo hit a lead off double and scored on a Luis Garcia shallow fly to center. Joey Meneses would double off the wall but Garcia was gunned down at the plate for the second out. Andrew Vaughn grounded to short to end the rally. Gleyber Torres would make it a 3-2 game with a solo home run in the seventh, but that would be all for the Nationals and they lose the game and the series.

Washington crawls into the All Star Break having played 20 games in 20 days, and it took its toll on the entire team. The team was exhausted for their final series in Philadelphia, and could not score more than two runs in any of the four games. Nonetheless, they enter the break at 46-53, which is a major improvement from last year. A new problem this year is where to play everyone, especially after acquiring Giolito and Vaughn. The plan entering the second portion of the season is to move Cade Cavalli to the bullpen as a long relief man to see how Giolito performs. Vaughn will be taking Joey Meneses’ position at first while Brandon Drury is out, and Meneses will most likely float around the corner outfield spots and fill in at first and third as needed. He has been struggling for the past few weeks, and the club is hoping he turns it around quickly or he may need to be replaced as an everyday player.

The Nationals will start the second “half” of the season at home against the AL West leading Astros, but they are not the juggernaut team of yesteryear….
