Bring back Wilpons might as well
They're already at the second threshold (they have the second largest payroll in baseball), signing someone like Snell would put them above the highest threshold. They'd have to pay like $70 million this year to get him, and once again have the highest payroll in baseball to probably be 3rd Place.

They have like $150 million coming off the books next year. Makes a lot of sense to stand pat, and try and make the big splash next offseason.

Hopefully this thread can stay active.

When the game comes out I would love to know everyone's roster solutions to this mess.

I remember I tried to explain to someone back in 2022 that the Mets were built to win THAT year.
They told me I didn't know what I was talking about.
It is amazing how unknowledgeable people can be.

We didn't win in 22 or 23 so now 24 is not even a rebuilding year but a salary dump year.

We came close on Yamamoto but this isn't horseshoes.

Lord knows what the Mets will like on the actual game.

22 was a great year until we ran into the Padres. But when they beat tye Dodgers too it was a little easier to get over. I doubt I can beat LA in 24 without a significant in season trade/trades but I do feel confident I can win a wild card series or if I can't get in the playoffs, at least not be eliminated before the last series of the year in 24. Unless the Show reduces the Mets budget, I'm not playing with a salary dump mentality like in real life Met management.

          This is ridiculous.

Max was right the Mets are throwing in the towel for 2024.
They really were. I wasn't a fan of their moves last year. They spent a ton of money to not really improve their team (on paper). Some of that was bad luck (Diaz), but it can't really be a surprise when your 40 year old starting pitchers aren't the workhorses they used to be. And they're paying for that this year; they've got $50 million going to players not even on the team.

But they've got a chance to make some moves next year. Re-signing Alonso would obviously be a huge priority. But they'll certainly be in on Sasaki. And it's not like they'll be terrible this season. They're just probably not going to be on the level of the Phillies or Braves.

The Verlander signing was one of the absolute worst EVER. If they weren't going to keep him then it was stupid to pay him 86 million because they are stuck with paying $35 million of his salary !

It would have been smarter to keep him and let the damn contract run out this year because we are handcuffed by his contract anyway.

If he can get healthy you can get at least 20-25 good starts out of him.
Now he is gone and we have no pitching and are stuck with paying a huge portion of his deal.

I don't know what Eppler and Cohen were thinking on that deal. That is a terrible contract for the Mets anyway you look at it.

Re: MLB the Show 24 The Mets

I like what theyve done this off season. Don’t go handing out huge multi year contracts to guys over thirty where the player ends up in decline for half his contract. I’m even ok with letting Alonso walk or trading him at the deadline, I want no part of a ten year deal for a guy that will turn 30 in the off season. My plan in The Show is taking the Braves approach, once I call a player up and identify him as someone I want long term I’m offering a ten year deal so that I get all his prime years and I’m not stuck with some useless 38 year old because I waited until the last possible minute to sign him to a big deal. If I’m dipping in the free agent market it will for someone younger like Soto.

I also love that the top guys in their farm system are position players. The game isnt great at replicating this but in real life it seems like a much more sustainable way of building a team. In 2015 the Mets looked like they’d be an annual contender with Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard, and a rehabbing Zach Wheeler in their rotation but you never know how a pitcher will hold up. Give me a team full of guys that can hit and a rotation full of Jose Quintana’s, guys that may not have the sexiest stuff but you can count on them for 30 starts that are mostly 6ip giving up 2-3 runs

Re: MLB the Show 24 The Mets

I’m personally looking forward to simming my first season and reading a lot of the one year deal players to continue to build out the farm. Then in the first offseason try to spend a bunch of the freed up money for 2025 since that’s what the Mets are going to do. I did the same in last years game and I’m in 2026 with a highly competitive team that’s in first in the league and a World Series favorite after a leap in 2025.

Personally I like the projects with the Mets because you can try to grow some young talent and trade some for big names when it makes sense to make the team competitive.

If I stick with my plans and run with a Mets franchise I’m considering moving Diaz.

Think I could get a younger starter and a pretty good prospect for him and clear some salary.

Feel like I’m good enough pitching in the game that I can use a cheaper, lower rated reliever to close.

Will depend on the team budget the Mets open within the game this year.

                          Any suggestions?

I can't think of any at the moment, but maybe there is a possible contender that needs a closer and can swing a deal.

Keep in mind Mets will have a lot of budget space in the game since the game does not have the feature that forces you to pay Scherzer, Verlander, and McCann this year like they are in real MLB
