Re: MLB The Show 24 Impressions Thread

Impressions from someone who hasn't bought the game since I think 2020 and only dabbled in 2 or 3 games a year ago.

Thin black font on a bright white background makes it so you really have to concentrate to see a lot of the writing outside of the main gameplay. I mentioned all the reasons why in the "MLB The Show 24's Bright White Menus Causing Some Discomfort" thread, but this game legitimately has the worst menu system in video game history. I don't understand how this was shipped like this.

Despite not playing in a few years (minus maybe an hour or 2 a year ago), the controls were easy to pickup. The Show still plays a great game of baseball, just like I remember. I'm still trying to find the right sliders for me (pitching is easy, hitting is hard), but I am definitely enjoying the on field play.

Animations also look good. I've seen some pretty ridiculous web gems pulled against me.

Presentation is a bit disappointing, which probably has more to do with my expectations than the actual product. The statcasts and overall theme of what they seem to be going for are all positives. Something just seems to be missing. The commentary crew are fine enough, just underwhelming. I always remembered really enjoying the color commentary in The Show, and I'm just not getting that right now. It's fine enough, and it's still about 80 paces ahead of where Madden is right now, but I just had higher expectations based on my memory.

Franchise...I'm not surprised by what I've seen, which is not a good thing. Franchise seems mostly untouched from where I left the series 3 or 4 years ago, and the reason that I stopped buying it was because it had been left mostly untouched for a while even back then.

Overall it plays a solid game of baseball with some nice touches in a few areas to get you locked into that 9 inning game. The UI is a total black mark, and franchise should just be called franchise-lite.

I think you echo my sentiments as well. I love the game, aforementioned thin franchise mode in all, but there are some warts for sure.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly.

The good: Gameplay is the best in the series, on my tv the colors are vibrant and the skies are fantastic. The sounds are good as I always mute the commentary. Due to some health issues I let the CPU do my scouting so I can’t say much about it. Thank you SDS for roping in the strikeouts. This is the first year that I have not touched the sliders except to increase the injury slider to 8. Game is great out of the box.

The bad: Stadium creator is just laying in the weeds waiting to die. There is a lot of low hanging fruit to pick that would make it much better.
The uniform creator is also in the weeds, something as simple as adding another slot or two and the ability to interchange would be a big plus.

The ugly: the menus and fonts are a bad decision and I suggest whoever thought that was a good choice needs to pee in a cup and get checked out. ZZ Top said it best “go get yourself some cheap sunglasses “.

          Damn you, CB😉

I put a lot of stock in what you think of the game and I trust your opinions, because we have a similar history. I had no intention of buying this but after three or four of your posts, I'm downloading it right now!

And, even though I can get it on Xbox game pass for free, I'd rather buy it on its original platform (I'm on PS5) and reward the developers for the single greatest sports video game ever made, year after year.

I’m noticing more infield pop ups around the pitchers mound are being handled by position players instead of pitcher.

Can someone please help me..I have MLB The Show 24 on xbox series X and when I go to try and play online in a ranked match it always takes me to the top of the screen. I have restarted it 100 times and and ive even deleted the game and then installed it again and it does the same thing.

Defense matters so much. I played last year with the Diamondbacks who start out as a pretty good defensive team and I kept adding players over the few seasons that I played. Most players that I added were also gold or platinum at their position.

Now playing this year, I have been running a test franchise with the Tigers. They have some decent defensive players, certainly not a terrible team, but man what a difference fielding is from that power house I had last year.

Defense is by far the best it has ever been in a baseball game!

                  Positive :
I've seen enough improvements overall that the game feels as much fun, if not more, than MLBTS 23.

The lighting, the colors, but mainly, the sky, looks unbelievable this year. I know it's not a deal breaker for most, but I kinda have almost as fun watching the game than playing it!

I've seen more animations from players, making me smile a few times. Rolling the dice, bowling, etc. is fun and just add to the experience.

The combine is nice but geez that the ambiance is worse than when we we're 1800 in the Olympic Stadium for an Expos game.

The interactions with the agent, the coaches, etc. is also a nice touch.

                  Negative :
Only one thing. The menus (color and font) are not great on a visual standpoint. I know, maybe I'm old, but the handwriting font makes it unpleasant, let's say it that way.

Overall, while there's no wow factor, that game is fun. I've already played it 40 hours and I will surely have the same kind of year I had with MLBTS 20.
Yeah usually when im in a duel like that ? I either change speeds or use a pitch they havent seen even if its the lowest rated pitch, also do not be afraid to walk guys to save pitches. Tactical walks is a real thing

For anyone interested I have 212 strikeouts through 30 games of franchise. Playing every game, every pitch using Legend pitching with meter pitching mechanic. That averages out to 7.06 strikeouts per game.

Finally played a little bit of a spring training game last night. One thing, and apparently it was just a me thing since I haven't seen anyone else mention it, but the players always felt a bit light and twitchy (for lack of a better word) for me on 23. Didn't have that same feeling last night on 24. Definitely felt more weighted.

Like everyone else, I'm not thrilled with the UI. I can tolerate the white, although it wouldn't have been my first choice. The pink seems like it would have been a better fit last year with Jazz and the Marlins being on the cover. It's a little thing, but that extra little delay (with the sound effects) navigating to the franchise tile in the main menu is annoying. The UI as a whole needs to be more friendly. I just want to play franchise, let me pin that tile or do something where I don't have to go through the other tiles to get there.

I'm enjoying MLB24. The big issue I had with 23 was CPU striking out to much. That seems to be resolved. I think the game is playing a really good game of baseball. I really like how you can feel differences in defenders. Hitting feels good.

Only 3 gripes really from me:

                          1) It is disappointing to me that custom entry doesn't allow for quick counts. My typical way to play is to play entire game but with quick counts on.

I do find the custom entry addition to be intriguing and have played around with it. Not sure if I'd stick with it or not but what I've found out in my test plays is that with the type of custom entry conditions I would like, the loss of quick counts is making the game almost as long as normal full game with quick counts on. So the only real benefit for me is if I raise the entry conditions significantly.

Applaud the idea. I think the custom entry conditions is potentially a fun way to play for those who want some impact on games but don't want to play full 162. I really wish they would add quick counts to this feature however.

                          2) As someone who isn't interested in the Derek Jeter or Negro League storyline type modes, it really does feel like the game is stagnant. There are some quality of life things that make each iteration slightly better I couldn't honestly tell someone playing an older version to run out and grab this. It plays great, I'm having fun but realistically I could probably plop in a past version and have a very comparable experience. There are a lot of things they could be doing to improve the overall experience (eras modes, more managers tendencies, GM tendencies, A ball, deeper drafts. Etc.). Yhe current direction seems geared to these storyline modes which maybe they are finding to be popular. But in my mind these are very niche modes (I have zero interest in Derek Jeter for example).

                          3) I find the announcing to be very bad. I know it is bound to get repetitive (it does in all video games). But I find this so much worse than with the previous announcing crew. Maybe it because they have more story telling with this crew? I don't know. But about 15 games in franchise and I cringe hearing "Boog do you think you could draw a walk" or "Boog did you ever catch a foul ball as a fan". Matty V crew seems more just about the action so though it also repetitive it didn't seem as annoying to me.

Inning 2, up by three runs against the Astros. Astros manage to load the bases with no outs. I get it to 2 outs without a run scoring. 2 strikes on the batter at the plate

I couldn’t agree with this more. I can’t seem to enjoy playing the game without quick counts … pitch counts way too low on both ends… I’m up 0-2 way too often when pitching …Can’t draw enough walks. I just don’t enjoy it.

Custom entry really excited me as I do like to get in and out of games quickly … but as you said, it’s a feature targeted at people who like to get through games quickly while still having an impact … yet it doesn’t allow you to use the other feature that appeals to these same types of people.
