Re: MLB The Show 24 Franchise Mode Discussion Thread

Cardinals have interesting offseason ahead of them

The Cardinals finished the 2024 season with an 83-79 record that got them into the postseason as the 3rd wildcard team. They defeated the Brewers in the Wildcard Series but then were swept in the NLDS by the Phillies.

One consistent through the roller coaster season was the inconsistency of the pitching staff, primarily the bullpen. Sonny Gray was the ace of the staff and pitched like it all season. Kyle Gibson was a good combination with Gray, but was lost shortly after the all-star break. Miles Mikolas pitched well and Jack Flaherty was solid after being acquired from Detroit. The rest of the staff was inconsistent. Matthew Liberatore seemed overmatched more often than not, but the Cards couldn't move him to Memphis. Dakota Hudson and Cooper Hjerpe tried but neither was effective as they needed to be to help the rotation.

In the bullpen, there really wasn't anyone that you felt you could count on, expect for Jordan Hicks. When Hicks came over from the Giants, he gave the staff stability on the backend. But that was it, as Ryan Helsley, Genesis Cabrera, Jo Jo Romero, Andrew Kittredge, and Keynan Middleton were inconsistent as the bullpen blew multiple games over the course of the season.

Its no secret that pitching will be the primary focus for this Cardinals team this winter. I anticipate the front office seeking two arms for the rotation and maybe 4-5 arms for the bullpen as they look to rebuild it.

Offensively, the Cardinals were in the top 10 in runs scored and homeruns. There really isn't much needed in terms of everyday players, aside from the possibility of Paul Goldschmidt and Harrison Bader not being re-signed, but those spots are likely filled internally with Nolan Gorman playing first and rookie Victor Scott II being the favorite going into spring. Depth will be needed especially up the middle. Jordan Walker can help fill out the corner spots but the Cardinals need depth at middle infielder. When Donovan, Winn, and Edman were out of the lineup, Cesar Prieto and Brandon Crawford were relied upon with Gorman mixing in at 2nd base, but the club feels he's best as a first baseman. I would expect Mason Wynn to start the year in Memphis, depending on how Spring goes, as he tore his labrum late August, so getting him healthy and in a routine will be key.

In the outfield, its a log jam, something the Cardinals are getting used to. I don't expect Bader or Tyler O'Neill to be re-signed. Lars Nootbaar was highly impressive all season as well as October so its likely he's a lock for left field while Dylan Carlson will man the other corner. Victor Scott II and Mike Antico will likely battle this spring for the centerfield spot. More depth is in the minors but probably still a year away in terms of Chase Davis, Micheal Siani, Zach Levenson, and Won Bin Cho.

Willson Contreras had a great season winning the Silver Slugger Award for catcher in the National League. Expect him to return as the backstop behind the plate and bat in the middle of the lineup. Ivan Herrera served well as a backup and stepping in when Contreras was injured, but the Cardinals could seek a veteran backup and let Herrera get everyday at-bats and call games behind the dish at Memphis. Leonardo Bernal is another name to watch as he was exceptional in Springfield, so he could keep Herrera from catching everyday at Memphis if the Cards decide to promote him. He did have injury issues last year, so they could look to keep him at Springfield at least to start the season.

So there's the outlook for this winter for the Cardinals. They need pitching help desperately and that will be the upmost importance to the front office, with depth the other concern. But as always, something always happens in the offseason you're not expecting and your best laid plans get turned upside down.

Cardinals re-sign Jack Flaherty to 2 year contract

The Cardinals have re-signed RHP Jack Flaherty to a 2 year/$14M contract with the 2nd year as a mutual option.

Flaherty went 14-10 last year with a 4.61 ERA, but since being acquired from the Tigers, Flaherty pitched well for the Cardinals bringing a near 7 ERA down to under 5. Flaherty also had 143 strikeouts in 170 plus innings.

The deal allows Flaherty to have a showcase year so to speak and prove to the Cardinals that he can return to the pitcher that came thru their ranks and it he has a tremendous season, he can opt out and look for a bigger payday. The Cardinals are protected if he struggles next year that they can opt out of the deal and move on.

With Sonny Gray the clear cut ace, Flaherty won't have a whole lot of pressure on him, especially if the Cardinals are able to sign some arms this winter.

Marlins send Luis Arraez to Tigers for Riley Greene

The Marlins and Tigers made the first trade this winter as the Marlins since 2B Luis Arraez to the Tigers in exchange for OF Riley Greene. The Tigers will have one year of control over Arraez before he is a free agent, but this gives one more year for prospect Colt Keith to mature.

The Marlins add Riley Greene to a young core as the Marlins look to rebuild and improve so they can contend with the Phillies and Braves in the NL East.

        2024 Chicago Cubs 04/01-04-03

        Overall Record:5-1 (1st NL Central/1.0 over Pirates)

        Game Results:

        Game 1
        Cubs-4
        Rockies-2

        Game 2
        Cubs-2
        Rockies-1

        Game 3
        Cubs-8
        Rockies-0

Cubs net their first sweep of '24

Sure, the Rockies are predicted to be one of the worst teams in baseball. That matters not to the Cubs who have to be thrilled with their first sweep of the 2024 season.

The Rockies didn't make it easy either. Charlie Blackmon got the first homerun in Wrigley in 2024 with his game one 1st inning blast off of Jameson Taillon that gave the Rockies the 1-0 lead.

The Cubs would answer back however in the bottom half of the inning as they scored two to take the lead for their first time. Two was nice but it could have been more. The Cubs got the bases loaded with just one out after Nico Hoerner singled and Cody Bellinger and Patrick Wisdom walked. Dansby Swanson then accounted for the two runs with a two run RBI single before Ian Happ eventually grounded into a double play to end the threat and the inning.

Brendan Rodgers and Ryan McMahon then combined for a pair of doubles in the fourth inning that tied the game up at two each. But once again, the Cubs answered back in the bottom half of the inning. Dansby got the first run on the board with a leadoff homerun, his second on the season. Christopher Morel later hit a ball into the gap that he was able to leg out for a triple. He was then brought in for the Cubs' fourth run via a Yan Gomes rbi double.

Taillon really settled in after that first inning allowing just three hits and the two runs. He did however last just six innings as Julian Merryweather, Mark Leiter JR, and Adbert Alzolay were nearly perfect in releif as the trio allowed just one hit and no runs as the Cubs went on to take the game 4-2.

Game two was likely the Cubs worst offensive performance of the year as they managed just four total hits. Luckily, rookie Jordan Wicks was solid in his start (7.0 IP, 6 H,1 R, 1 BB, 6 SO) and the Cubs lack of offense was forgiven as the game went into the ninth tied. Cody Bellinger then hit a walkoff homerun off of the Rockies' Ryan Feltner to give the Cubs the 2-1 victory.

Chicago's worst offensive performance was then followed up by their best. A strong offense that included four homeruns (Seiya Suzuki (1), Cody Bellinger (2) and Patrick Wisdom (2 and 3) ) put up eight runs as Justin Steele pitched the Cubs first complete game shutout of the year.

The Cubs will now welcome the Dodgers (4-5/2nd NL West) to town in what will likely be a much tougher matchup to end the six game homestand.

That is a tough end to it all but sounds like it was a success with spotty pitching and barely making the postseason. Hopefully you can get back there in 2025 and further!

Re: MLB The Show 24 Franchise Mode Discussion Thread

Reds set the tone early in Pittsburgh as we begin a very important series.

McLain leads off the game with a homerun, his 15th of the season which is just wild. 10 in April however so he cooled down considerably.

Then Elly smashes his 11th in the 1st inning as well. Friedl leads off 2nd inning with another homerun lol. His 8th of the season. Then in the 4th Tyler Stephenson hits a 3 run homer. His 10th of the season. I was just all over Oviedo from literally first pitch.

We win it 8-2. They threatened a few times with 8 hits of their own. Graham Ashcraft with another quality start. Proving it was the right decision to call him up and place Nick Martinez in the bullpen. Martinez came in and saved 2 runs for Ashcraft. So maybe finally he gets it together in the bullpen.

This division race is going to the end. Brewers, Cubs, and Cardinals all already won their games. I'm just trying to hold on to 3rd place at this point lol.

                    August 27: Hops 6, Snow Sox 5
                    August 28: Hops 6, Snow Sox 5

Colorado Springs, CO (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops got back to their winning ways as they swept Colorado Springs to keep their very slim playoff hopes alive.

The Hops ended a four-game losing streak on Monday evening with a 9-1 victory over the Snow Sox. Juro Yamaguchi threw a complete game, allowing one run and striking out six as he improved to (7-11) on the year.

Flagstaff jumped on Colorado Springs early and often in this one, leading 8-0 after four innings. In the first, Emmitt Hampton hit an RBI double, scoring Robbie Westbrook. Roberto Geronimo followed with a sac fly to score Ryan Kelly. Emmitt Hampton then scored on a Brian Chin wild pitch to make it 3-0.

In the second, Donnie Roland lined an RBI double into the right field corner, scoring Bradley York. Ryan Kelly then singled home Donnie Roland to make it 5-0.

In the third, Bradley York singled home Thomas Sanders and Donnie Roland hit a sac fly that scored David Benitez to make it 7-0. Ryan Kelly would add a solo home run to lead off the fourth, his 19th on the year.

Colorado Springs would get on the board in the sixth on back-to-back doubles from Donnie Samuels and Donnell Marcus.

The Hops would add a run in the eighth after rookie Richie Jackson walked, stole second and third, and then scored on a Isaac Nettles ground out.

Brian Chin (4-15) took the loss for the Snow Sox, only lasting 1.2 innings and allowing five runs on six hits.

On Tuesday evening, the Hops used a five-run fifth inning to rally for a 6-5 victory over the Snow Sox.

Colorado Springs would grab a 1-0 lead in the first on a Donnie Samuels RBI single that scored Rodriguez. A Roberto Geronimo solo home run in the second tied the ballgame at 1-1. It was his 27th on the season.

The Snow Sox then struck for four in the bottom of the second off of Russell Fluty to blow the game open. Todd Austin singled and Jacob Myers doubled to open the inning. Dudeck struck out and Gonzalez struck out, but reached on a wild pitch with Austin coming in to score. Edmundo Rodriguez then blasted a three-run home run to make it 5-1. It was his first on the year.

In the fifth, the Hops struck for five runs to turn a 5-1 deficit into a 6-5 lead. Robbie Westbrook homered to leadoff the inning, his 17th. Forrest Owen and Bradley York singled. Donnie Roland doubled to left center, scoring Owen and moving York over to third. Thomas Sanders lined a two-run single to center to tie the game up at 5-5. Emmitt Hampton then lined a two-out, RBI double to put the Hops in front.

Russel Fluty (6-12) worked six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits. He struck out six and walked three. Pedro Macias pitched two scorless innings, striking out three, and Vic Miller came on in the ninth. He allowed a single and walked a batter, but managed to get Edmundo Rodriguez to strike out looking to end the game, earning his 29th save on the year.

Humberto Aguilar (12-11) took the loss for Colorado Springs. He only lasted 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits.

On Wednesday afternoon, thw Hops jumped out to a big lead, then held on for a 6-5 victory to complete the sweep. David Benitez and Forrest Owen each drove in two runs in the victory.

The Hops would jump on Chip Wolf in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs to grab an early lead. Ryan Kelly led off the game with a double to left and scored on a one-out RBI single from Phillip Choi. Forrest Owen then reached with two-outs on an error by third baseman Donnell Marcus. David Benitez then lined a two-run double into left center, but was thrown out trying to stretch the play into a triple.

Mike Rock would get the Snow Sox on the board in the second, hitting a solo home run to left off of Geraldo Rodriguez.

A two-out, two-run single from Forrest Owen in the third put the Hops up 5-1. Phillip Choi and Oscar Aleman scored on the play. A two-out RBI single from Richie Jackson in the sixth made ot 6-1 and it looked like the Hops would cruise. But the bullpen once again struggled.

In the bottom of the sixth, Mike Rock greeted Samuel Espinoza by blasting a home run to right. It was his second of the game and 23rd on the season. Rock, a switch hitter, hit a home run from both sides of the plate.

In the seventh, Juan Primo hit a two-out, solo home run (17) off of Kenneth Valdez to cut the lead to 6-3. Oliver Benedict tightroped his way out of an eighth inning jam to set it up for closer Vic Miller.

But Miller once again struggled. He got Juan Primo to ground out, and walked Mike Rock. Todd Austin then launched a long home run (22) to right to cut the lead to 6-5. But Miller would settle down, getting the final two outs to earn his 30th save on the season.

The win moved the Hops to (64-71) with 27 games left. They are 7.5 games back of St George in the ML West and 6.5 games back of Fort Worth for the second Wild Card spot with four teams still ahead of them. They do play St George seven times over the final 24 games.

Up next, the Hops will wrap up their nine game road trip with a three game weekend series in Prescott (60-74).

Around the League: Surprise has placed first baseman Ken Hollinger on the 10-day Injured List with a fractured foot. He will likely miss the remainder of the regular season. This is a big blow for the Saguaros as they currently sit seven games back of Scottsdale in the DL Central, but sit in the top Wild Card spot. Hollinger was hitting .262 with 23 home runs and 57 RBIs.

Santa Fe pounded out 19 hits as they whalloped El Paso 16-4 to get back to .500. Robby Flores went 4 for 4 with a double, home run (17) and three RBIs, scoring four runs in the win for the Jays. The Express have now lost four of five.

Las Vegas' Jon Reyes (6-8) tossed 7.2 innings of shutout baseball, scattering two hits, striking out 11 and walking six as the Nuggets defeated Phoenix 4-0 and they hang around in the DL Wild Card race at (67-66). Lima went 3 for 4 with a double, home run (21) and drove in two runs.

Chandler got RBI singles from Carl Lentzkow and Henry Ruiz in the 11th inning as they defeated San Antonio 3-1 in a battle of first-place teams and former IBL Champions. Chandler's Francisco Santiago was going for his 17th win, but did not figure in the decision. He pitched 7.2 innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out 11.

Albuquerque completed a three game sweep of Mesa on Wednesday afternoon with a 7-3 victory, scoring four runs in the top of the ninth, as the Mariachis remain very much alive in the ML Wild Card chase.

Las Vegas' Brandon Rousch (19,20) and Enrique Lima (14,15) each hit two home runs and each drove in three runs as Las Vegas pounded Phoenix 13-3. Catcher Norm Richard went 4 for 4 with a home run (14) and four RBIs, scoring twice for the Nuggets in the win.

Santa Fe's Jared Hughes (14-3) pitched 7.1 shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out eight, as the Jays blanked El Paso 2-0.

Rio Rancho scored six times in the top of the ninth to rally for a 15-13 victory over the Aliens down in Roswell. Roswell's Angel Rodriguez hit for the cycle, going 4 for 4, driving in four, in the losing effort. Bill Olsen led the Owlz, hitting two doubles and driving in five runs as the Owlz stretched their lead to 2.5 games over El Paso in the ML Central. Rio Rancho scored 34 runs in the three game sweep of the Aliens.

Ryan Kelly and the Hops are hot, but is it too late.

Cardinals sign Walker Buehler to 3 year deal

The Cardinals primary focus this offseason was pitching and that is where they started. The Cardinals have signed RHP Walker Buehler to a 3 year/$21MM deal. The 30 year old will have a player option after year 2.

Buehler was relegated to the bullpen last year after struggling as a starter and then injuries. He posted a fine 3.82 ERA and even recorded 3 saves. He had 17 starts, but only 3 of those resulted in quality starts.

Buehler will join Sonny Gray and Jack Flaherty as the only two known returners to the rotation. Miles Mikolas is likely to return if he's not dealt this winter as he is drawing interest.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Thank god I only have to play in Cleveland and hear their strikeout chime every other year. I was about to punch my tv after striking out 16 times in the series finale and hearing it every time.

Cubs' hot start continues with series win over juggernaut Dodgers

That Dodgers team is scary good especially the offense! The Cubs won their first series against LA in 2024 but it definingly felt like the Dodgers were going to strike with every at bat.

Game one saw Yoshinobu Yamamoto take the mount for LA while Kyle Hendricks started for Chicago. Neither were particularly good but they were serviceable and both left the game with it tied 4-4 in the sixth inning. Yamamoto allowed 8 hits, 4 runs ,3 walks and struck out a single batter. Hendricks allowed 10 hits, 4 runs but also struck out 5.

The Dodgers offense struck for five runs between the 7th and 8th innings and eventually took the game, 9-5.

Game two saw Shohei Ohtani start for the Dodgers and as to be expected, he was really good. That is despite the final score that got out of hand after he left the game after five innings of work. In those five innings, he only allowed 2 hits but did walk 3 and his second allowed hit was a two run double by Matt Mervis.

The game was broken open in the eighth innings when Joe Kelly entered the game and failed to record an out as he surrendered four runs that included Nico Hoerner's first home run and Christopher Morel's second, a three run shot.

The Cubs went on to win, 7-1 to tie the series.

Game three saw the Cubs get out to an early 8-2 lead after four innings as they got to Tyler Glasnow and knocked him out after just three innings. That powerful Dodgers offense reered its head however as they got the game back to 8-6 after the seventh inning but after that, Drew Smyly and Adbert Alzolay pitched two hitless innings of work as Alzolay got his fourth save of the season with the Cubs winning the game 8-2 and the series, 2-1.

The Cubs will stay in Cali as they head to San Diego to take on the Padres (6-6/1st NL West)

Texas Rangers update MOM year 2.

As we get ready for life after the All Star Break, Texas sits 54 and 42 yet 10 games behind red hot Houston. We do hold the number 1 wild card spot. The AL won the All Star game and Cy Young front runner Nathan Eovaldi from the Rangers was the MVP. My only other All Star was Cory Seagar who has 23 HRs at the break. Personally I think Garcia got hosed as hes hitting 280 with 16 hrs. The Rangers did make 1 trade so far as we traded Lorenzen for Langliers. Texas will open the 2nd half against the Sacramento As ( I rebranded them after year 1)
