Re: What Are You Working On? - MLB The Show 23 Edition

Couldn't go on vacation with a clunker game so I went back into BR and I think went 3-1...still not hitting well, haven't hit well for like 2-3 weeks, supposed it's not playing as much and alternating between online/offline, rookie/legend/all star/etc

Jumped in to play one ranked game with luzardo and I won 7-2 but it was still pretty sweaty. The guy didn't swing at anything out of the zone. I think I pitched luzardo for 7 and then brought in rollie fingers and he was lost against rollie so I just kept him in there. I'm not 37-0 in ranked.

I played a casual game after because I didn't want to try as hard and I was just gonna use all RP to test them out. First guy quit quick, the 2nd game was tighter at shippett and I think we got to the 8th before he quit. I was up 6-4 and he drilled one in the gap but jrod ran it down so I think he got mad and quit.

I've been trying to go back and figure out the leg kick timing and I just can't hit that way. I'm gonna try a little bit more but it's just so hard to look at the pitcher release, determine what pitch it is, determine location and at the same time out of my periphery pay attention to the leg kick or hand shift from each batter. It doesn't seem like a timing cheat almost if you can master it but it's so hard to look at all that stuff at once.

I went in practice mode with trout and still couldn't really get it down. People say his leg kick being higher makes it easier but I kept getting jammed with him. Everyone seems to hate corbin carrol cause he doesn't have a good timed swing but he's prob my best hitter this year.

Well we finally got a Willson for the Cards theme and its only a 98 but with the Brock Captain boost puts his contact over 100 both sides so he's very respectable and that 98 Nootbaar should do fine as a platoon but now i can use my Wildcard as the 99 Musial instead of Torre to catch so my lineup is this now

      CF -O'neill Potm
      3B- Sig Capenter
      DH-Big Mac
      1B-99 Stan the Man
      LF- Retro Holliday
      2B- Finest Gorman
      SS- Allstar DeJong
      RF-Brock/98 Noot
      C- Contreras

      Bench
      94 Bader
      97 Goldy
98 Nootbaar who will go in for Brock
      95 Edman

      Rotation
      99 Sig Waino
      97 Wacha
      97 Gibson
      97 lynn
      97 Flaherty

      Bullpen
      non cardinals
      97 Diekman
      98 Matzek
99 Franco wanted 4 lefties and the Cards have never had good lefties
      99 Rollie

      Cardinals
      79 Zuniga
      95 Gallegos Capt
      95 Romero
      99 Helsley

also almost done with the Br Program and i need 4 more cards to get that 99 Raines who i have gotten in most of my Br drafts and he is insane ... i took 99 Bo with my 2nd collection pack so i think after i finish the BR program ill hop into ranked with the Cards team and see how high i can get until the next program drops

The Finest program is...interesting. The rewards suck but I like that they're fiddling around with program structures (hopefully using them to improve upon them next year).

I really like that you can unlock players by merely playing a single moment (which then goes into the individual player missions to advance the primary program path). I think that a structure like this is really good - you're not necessarily 'forced' to grind a bunch of moments to begin getting cards to get a program grind underway. (I think this structure would be particularly fantastic for the monotonous programs like Topps Now).

I think the offensive player repeatable PXP mission might be a bit too short at 100 PXP (you can PIV one player and finish the entire main program path - which is incredibly weird and that doesn't even account for the other missions you'd accomplish along the way by using that one player). On the other hand, it does give the user a tremendous amount of flexibility in how they go about finishing the primary program path.

This new collection thing though gives me pause. As of right now, the cards are strictly from odds-based premium packs and I'm not a fan of that.

As for me, I'm basically just putzing around with TA 2. I'd like to at least unlock the second Set 2 collection pack (I took Aaron with the first) so I can try out that David Wright. I've noodled around with TA 1, but that grind sucks without them including any sort of repeatable mission for the Charisma series. At least with TA2, we got the mission for Incognito cards (and honestly, some of them are kinda fun).
Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.

Thank you for making me not feel like the lone person who can’t make the leg kick timing thing work. I can tell it would be great if I could figure it out, but it’s just not happening.

I also really like the new player unlock moments mechanic, the associated missions balance out how few points you get in the program for each one. I think it’s also a fair compromise on the collection angle - I can live with the pack-only upside when they leave the option for an easily-started, but potentially lengthy grind. So we effectively have online, offline, and pack-driven advancement options all within the same program.

We can’t expect SDS to not try to encourage pack/stub purchasing as that’s their moneymaker, so I appreciate the way that they still build in progression options for those who don’t want to go that route.

Aside from that awful 2-phase program path in one case, I think SDS has done a good job in adapting the structure of their programs based on the community’s feedback over time this year. The Father’s Day program was hitting rock bottom, but the trend line has been positive ever since.

It 1000% works if you can master it. If you replay a perfect swing the foot step and timing is perfect. But it's hard

I couldn't get trout down in practice mode with only fastballs inside for strikes. I do practice on legend with speeds turned up but I don't think it would've mattered.

Trout and turner are supposed to be easier but the short strides like musial I actually find a little easier than the higher leg kicks.

Jimmie Foxx you can time up his hands easier than foot too.

I think it's worth trying but I've tried it in the past too for extended times and I eventually give up on it.

Makes sense. I just can’t process that variety of inputs quickly enough. Speed I can pick up decently, location/break is trickier but doable, but I can’t take my eyes off of focusing on the pitch long enough to track the leg kick.

Is prob easier if you use the same 9 hitters all the time and really just focus on their swings... Maybe too if all 9 had more or less the same leg kick style

Good point. As someone who is a completionist offline player at low difficulty levels, if I ever get more than a week with the same lineup, it’s a shock.

Had a little time and started doing some Extreme Mini Seasons games to finish the Finest program. I actually really enjoyed the structure as it wasn't the same, drawn out grind. The progress happened pretty quickly and I think I got it all done in like 3 or 4 games.

But now I find myself at the end of the rope. It just feels like the game is dead and buried which is wild considering the gameplay is actually pretty solid this year. When all the cards open up next month maybe that will make things more interesting. As for now, it just kinda feels like I'm done for the most part. Doesn't mean I won't play but there's really nothing to look forward to.

i finally took some time to play last night and i also liked the structure for the Finest program and almost got it all done in 1 game agaisnt the cpu but i like most of the cards especially that Nootbaar and Willson on the Cards team will be good with the boost that they get from the Brock captain.. im hoping for another Cards player in the new Ranked or Br program but other than that i think i will maybe just play ranked and use a couple of the different Captains and see which ones are fun and i do believe we really need a 2B captain or a powerful SS or 2B for the 50hr club captain also ...

other than the SS captain or the durability captain has anyone used any captains and liked the boost they give with different players?

i really like the 90s pitching captain as well

(Disclaimer: impressions below are mainly for non-Season 5 eligible squads. I also build 100% theme team-eligible teams, if you mix/match, you can stretch the viability even more)

I've dabbled with nearly every captain card in the game (I made it a point to buy them all when they came out). I'm definitely a HUGE fan of the short kings/tall kings captain cards.

I think the Tall Kings card in particular could easily be a "meta" card - 97s get boosted to the point of being on par with most "pure" 99s and 99s get crazy good H/9 and K/9 when boosted with this Captain. There's a NICE mix of different styles of SPs you can use here (Waino and Wacha are disgusting with this theme team). I prefer mainly hard throwers but there's also a nice pool of sinker/cutter guys eligible as well. If you have stubs to blow on a Captain...blow it here....

The Short Kings card may be a little more of a "taste" thing, but if you prefer shorter players/shorter strike zones for your hitters, it definitely can work. The C/1B/CF pool is pretty shallow (but with viable options at each spot), but there are some REALLY good swing-based hitters (like J-Ram, Rollins, Altuve, Raines) and you get sizable boosts vs RHP (plus nice boosts to fielding). And even though the Morgan captain card doesn't have great numbers vs LHP, his swing is so good that he still slaps balls pretty hard. (Edit: if you're looking to do a theme team for Season 5, this one is a lot more viable with Set 4/5 cards than the Tall Kings)

I still like the Clemente program hitting captain (Lindor), which you almost definitely have (as I believe you've grinded-out a lot). Definitely check-out the player pool again (I think the Season 5 releases have added more depth to the player pool).

Depending on your thoughts about older era players, the 50s-60s Mays card is pretty fun. Nice speed/fielding boosts plus hitting. I actually prefer the 70s-80s era personally, but the Bench captain card doesn't particularly stand-out to me.

Well i was looking forward to jumping in ranked using some of the Captains like the 50hr club although theres not 2B or SS that we can use there ( we need AROD) and the short kings capt since i unlocked the new Tim Raines ( he rakes) but man o man are the rewards for the new season lame and id probably say the worst rewards all year almost ...

Yeah, those rewards are...meh. Feels like SDS is 'punting' for the remainder of the year...looks like no offline content at all for today either....

If you DO wind-up trying out some of the more exotic theme teams; I'd still love to hear about your outcomes online...curiosity shall we say
