Re: MLB 12 The Show - PS3 Impressions Thread

I've played about 3 regular games and also did a few HR contests with the Move along with a real short game. I forgot how gorgeous the game was. The overall graphics, animations, lighting - just fantastic.

The ball physics are very nice but they haven't surprised me. I just sort of expected them and since I haven't played the game in two years I can't really remember how it used to be. But the tail action on balls down the line is done well.

I picked up the Move and me and the kids are having fun in the HR derby. My son hit 12 HRs in one round. It's fun but I don't think I will ever use it to play in a franchise mode. More of a fun, exhibition type of game with the kids. The pitching can be fun too but the Move is hard. The swing is slow/laggy making you swing really early. Pitching is interesting and also tough with full motion. I think it's something you have to practice at and be committed to if you want to be good at.

Overall I find a lot of the old consistent tweaks I made to the Show apply to the new version as well. The pitch speed at 0 is perfect for me. I do think the pitch speed is slower when you drop it to the bottom by about two clicks if I had to guess. I"m not sure you would feel much difference at default. I can turn on fastballs and still try to have an eye at the plate even though I'm a hacker at heart. On default All-Star I think fielders arms are too strong. Stealing seems too easy and it may be a little HR happy but I don't mind tweaking sliders at all. Still have to play more and the game plays pretty well out of the box unlike most sports games it seems.

I found pulse pitching pretty hard at first but I'm getting the hang of it. I definitely like it and it is something you adjust to. My first few innings were horrible in terms of hitting the spot but I have adjusted. Using a zoomed out BTP view also makes it a thing of beauty. My brother and his friend came over last night and his buddy was horrible. We were down 16-1 to the Red Sox and he had given up about 15 of those runs as we alternated every inning. I'm not sure what pitching control scheme would have helped him lol.

Overall I'm really happy with it and glad I picked it up. Can't wait to play more tonight.

I'm quite pleased so far, other than the fact that I lost half a night's sleep getting acquainted. I'm not sure how I feel about the pulse pitching. It's definitely a challenge and leads to more realistic control, pitch counts and walks, which is fantastic. However, I don't much enjoy the mechanics of it so far, and I get almost dizzy trying to time the pulse just right. It seems to me that analog pitching is more enjoyable in the sense that it feels more interactive using the analog stick rather than pushing a button, more "hands on," if you will.

What I like best is that I've been given the option to choose one way or the other. Year in and year out, this is the most reliable, no-brainer purchase I make.

Ball Physics are absolutely amazing. Last year, I'd see the same hit twice in the same game, even inning sometime. I've yet to see one even close to another. They all hang in the air or drop faster than the one before it. I love it.

Also, absolutely love playing in the Marlins Stadium. Dissapointed the HR thing doesn't go off though.

Re: MLB 12 The Show - PS3 Impressions Thread

As a (mostly) newbie to the Show, I am really impressed with the three games I have played so far. I haven't yet tried out the Pulse Pitching yet, mostly because I really like their analog system. But I haven't seen a baseball game yet with the variety of hits and ball physics like this one, it's just ridiculous the things that I've already seen. Balls accurately bouncing off the wall; I saw a routine throw that bounced in and out of the first baseman's glove; bouncing and spinning liners right down the first bag line; I tried to check swing with a batter and the ball bounced off the barrel and flew foul. Everything just seems to have real weight to it, and coupled with the unbelievable graphics and presentation, it's like watching a game on TV.

So worth the money I spent on a PS3. The game is just a lot of fun. Simply unreal.

Analog feels looser this year. I walked several batters already. Last year, I felt it was too easy to throw strikes on default sliders.

Today I saw two outfielders drop an easy flyball out, which is more times that I have seen it happen in '08, '09, '10 and '11. It was nice to see it happen to be honest, it's usually just an automatic out in past years.

After about 5-6 games, I thought I'd give my impressions.

                          Positives:
                          • The ball physics are incredible. Everything bounces like a real life baseball, I've seen slices, hooks, and balls that just died mid air. I'm finally seeing choppers, and bloop singles (This was a major gribe of mine). Every hit feels different.
                          • To add to this, the fielding greatly benefits from the ball physics as well. Heres an example of what I saw. Reyes sliced one into right field off of Lee, and as Pence charged after it, the ball tailed and fell 5-10 feet short of him, and just to the right. He dove at the ball, but couldn't get to it in time, and stumbled onto the grass. Reyes made it to third easily.
                          • Pulse Pitching is phenomenal. When you make a mistake, you feel it. Whether that be a ball 4, or a monster homerun, its a mistake that you don't want to make.
                          • Commentary is better. I'd love for them to eventually revamp it entirely, but to be honest, what I've heard is pretty damn good. Its hard to judge, because I play so much of this game that its bound to get repetative.
                          • The sounds are unbelievable.
                          • I see stats all over the place in the middle of a game, and I hear the announcers talking stats. Its a beautiful thing.
                          • The game is about as perfect looking as anything I've ever seen.
                          • Swing animations, finally. Very thankful for this.

                          Negatives:
                          • Still see the Pitcher stopping too many liners up the middle. Its annoying, but certainly better than last year.
                          • The crowd doesn't feel as alive as I hoped.
                          • The presentation is still a little dull. I love the cutscenes, but the graphic overlays are still a little bland.

This game still needs a quick sim option for the franchise heads who want to skim through an entire season without it taking 30 minutes.
                            lol

Or at least have an option when prompts come up to ignore them.

Example; when a pop up comes up while simming the schedule that says 'Brett Gardner has suffered turf toe and will be out 2-3 weeks'
after all the options they give you to deal with the injury, give us one that says Have CPU Fix and Dont Ask Again.

that way, u can whiz through a full season in no time.

                              We discussed this at CD.
I think we'll see this next year.
If you choose "sim season" from one of the two "sim season" options(it's in two places if you look..one on the front end...the other from the schedule)...it will just continuously sim seasons(and off seasons) until you back out.
Aaron seemed to think they could add it.
We could do it with the debug machines at SCEA and it's pretty nice.

Analog hitting - you do not need to press any buttons to swing power/contact/normal, at least I can't find anything in the controls or in the tutorial that says anything about that.. which is great, btw.

Played another game tonight vs Anaheim and let me just say this game is baseball nirvana. I practiced with analog hitting and along with Pulse Pitching, it's like you have total control over your actions and it pairs that with the abilities of the players.

                                Final
                                STL - 4R 11H 1E
                                LAA - 2R 5H 1E

From start to finish, there was nothing and I mean nothing that had me say anything except for, "Did that just happen?". I hit my first HR against CJ Wilson with Berkman and took a 2 run lead in the first inning. Carpenter was his normal self, giving up 2 runs in the bottom of the first innning and then went on to pitch 8 innings, striking out 8 Angles. Brought Motte in to close the game out and with pulse pitching, you can tell the difference with a tired Carpenter vs a rested Motte. This game plays a game of baseball better than anything ever programmed, nothing even comes close. Bunting is even a blast with analog hitting. Hitting variety, ball physics? I saw singles, doubles, a triple, 2 HR's, a nubber down the line for a single, a wicked opposite hit that tailed away into the corner. I still think I haven't seen the same hit twice.

I found some options I turned on to see foul balls and HR celebrations, so I can't wait to see one of those after a big HR (I found that setting after my 2 HR's).

It's just a complete package, nothing feels added in just for adding it in.. and the game is beautiful in 1080p. Just the way the views change during the game on broadcast is a thing of beauty and playing a night game as the sun sets in Anaheim was surreal.

Pujols was 1-3 with a walk and I was stressing out everytime he came up to bat. So far, veteran feels perfect.. but I assume as I play more the next step will be all star.

                                What an experience....
