Any feedback on the three game series? How did it play? Was the variety there. Percentages of hit types seem balanced? Sustained rallies?

Re: FenwayMac Variety Hitting and Scoring Sliders

From that series I had a rally in the 7th inning with some timely hits and a huge 3 run homer. But again, majority of my runs come from homeruns. I did have one great hit with Trumbo. He turned on a inside slider and hooked it down the line for a double but I have yet to be able to consistently hit the inside pitch. They are usually fouls. All and all I do enjoy the set I just have to get my reactions up.

I tend to typically lay off inside pitch if it is on the black. Seems too hard to generate enough contact for a solid hit. If I am looking to pull up one of the lines, I would general move the PCI down to the 4 squares that make up the lower inside quadrant and hold off until I get a pitch more over the plate than the black. Occasionally I get caught looking doing this, but other times they are called balls because of the variable umpires.

I generally like pulling the ball lol. I eliminate the outer half of the plate unless I have to swing at a pitch out there.

No box score tonight because the game is going in to the 13th inning, but lots of positives to report:

Score is 6-6 in the 13th. Travis Shaw ties the game up with an RBI double with two out in the bottom half. There have been four lead changes throughout the game.

Houston has four doubles and two home runs, have struck out 16 times, and drawn four walks

Boston has stuck out five times, drawn three walks, and have a triple by Bogaerts (causing Papi to have to chug around three bases. Bogaerts nearly passed him, LOL) a solo shot by Ortiz, and the run-scoring shaw double. Five Red Sox have RBI's

Calling it for the night, but definitely one of the most entertaining games thus far.

Solid game against Houston. Five stolen bases against Wright, who was exposed for having a slow, knuckleball delivery. They also punched me out looking a handful of times painting the black on full counts.

Re: FenwayMac Variety Hitting and Scoring Sliders

Finished my test run with the Orioles. The power is definitely still there with the power slider at 4. My bats were there today as I hit various doubles with Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo. Started a real franchise with the Mariners and only got 5 hits against Darvish. Some neat hits I did see today were hitting a Curve ball to opposite field and it hit the line for a fair ball. I also hit against the shift and hit a grounder down the line for a double. I am enjoying the variety!

Re: FenwayMac Variety Hitting and Scoring Sliders

A nice finish to the series and home stand. I am in the middle of ten straight without a day off, so I have had to be creative to get guys some rest and the fatigue has showed in less power over the last several games. This game reversed that though with some a couple home runs from the Sox and doubles from both teams. Even got a steal!

Some neat hits I did see today were hitting a Curve ball to opposite field and it hit the line for a fair ball. I also hit against the shift and hit a grounder down the line for a double. I am enjoying the variety!
I have noticed that a lot of times at the beginning of the season, a lot of power is there because everybody is fully-charged and swinging away. It usually tails off after a few games or so.

Re: FenwayMac Variety Hitting and Scoring Sliders

I have just crossed the 40-game mark using a slider set that consists of:

                      Contact=7
                      Power=4
                      Timing=5
                      Solid Hits=3

The purpose of the set is to attempt to find more of a balance in hit types (singles, doubles, triples, home runs) as well as how runs are scored. i am attempting to create more sustained rallies that score via other methods other than the home run, which was happening almost 19% of the time for me with a contact at 6 and power at 5.

                      Storylines:

Before getting into the analysis of numbers, here are some of the highlights currently going on in my season:

                      - Red Sox are 24-16 at the 40-game mark. Currently trailing the dreaded Yankees by 1.5 games in the AL East. I love the fact that it is the Yankees that I need to mow down this season.

                      - David Ortiz leads the league in batting average and home runs, but trails in RBI. I think that The Show is being quite kind to the big guy in his final season, as he is an absolute beast at the plate. I have more to say about him in a bit.

                      - Brock Holt currently holds a 20-game hit streak that was extended with his last at bat with two outs in the top of the 9th against KC. Keep plugging away!

                      - ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATING NEWS - in the 40th game, Mookie Betts appeared to drop a ball in the outfield. In actuality, he took one off of the face and had to be removed for the game with concussion-like symptoms. After the game I checked the DL and as it would turn out, Mookie has a fractured cranium and is OUT FOR THE SEASON! This is going to take some serious thought as to how to adjust to this severe impact to the team. Trade? Free agent? Pull up a prospect. Have not even had time to process this yet.

So what's up with Papi and Shaw?

You will notice that overall my team looks pretty average in regards to most stats except strikeouts and walks. Strikeouts have been talked about earlier in this thread and I draw as many walks as I can. I often go deep into the count and have a decent eye to hold off, but if that baby is borderline, I am swinging and making contact.

Other than that, the other elephant in the room is the performance of David Ortiz, as well as Travis Shaw. Ortiz has been raking all season. I will say that even though it may not be obvious, the Ortiz with these sliders is a lot more varied and he has several more singles and doubles that my previous sliders. I also draw a lot of walks with him. BUT, here is the deal. Ortiz has a red-hot zone in the bottom half of the strike zone. And he is a lefty. And (while stat sources may vary) it is safe to say that well over 2/3 of pitchers are right-handed, thus giving Ortiz a healthy amount of righty-to-lefty at-bats. This, adding to the fact that I generally hit really well low in the zone has added to his success.

Which also then explains Shaw. He has a hot-zone in the lower-inside 4-square of the strike zone. He also bats left. Rinse and repeat.

I don't really feel too much else here seems out of place. Jackie Bradley has been a nice performer, and now with Mookie out for the season, I am going to rely on him more that ever.

                      Team Stats

Here are my team stats and ranking in the league:

                      BA- .269 10th

                      Hit Percentages

This is one the main focuses of my sliders. Lower the home runs, raise the singles and doubles. At 30 games, the percentages fell as follows:

                      Singles - 63.2%
                      Doubles - 20.9%
                      Triples - 2.0%
                      Home Runs - 13.9%

                      At the 40-game mark:

                      Singles - 64.9%
                      Doubles - 19.3%
                      Triples - 1.9%
                      Home Runs - 13.9%

Real MLB Red Sox (through 62 games)

                      Singles - 60.8%
                      Doubles - 24.5%
                      Triples - 2.8%
                      Homeruns - 11.9%

Real MLB Average (through 64 games)

                      Singles - 65.3%
                      Doubles - 19.6%
                      Triples - 2.0%
                      Homeruns - 13.1%

                      Hit Percentages Analysis

Remarkably, as I continue to add more games to my sample size, my hit percentages have fallen within a small fraction of actual MLB league averages! While the actual MLB Red Sox are besting my team in SLG, doubles, and triples, they are also doing so in real life. My franchise, on the other hand, is generally top-third in most categories, so my percentages, I feel, accurately represent that ranking. I am quite happy with what I am seeing!

                      Extreme Ranks

The laundry list is MUCH shorter this time around as only a few categories stand out as "abnormal" for my team stats.

BB - 89 29th - All I can say is, I do what I can. I am a patient hitter and on a good game I can draw about 3-5, but overall I only average 2.23 per game. If is coming in the zone on a full count, i gotta swing, and for the most part I make contact. Sometimes I get caught looking.

Strikouts - 174 1st Which leads to this stat. I don't strike out much. I have played long enough that I am good about getting a bat on the ball most of the time. In the future I may need to up to Hall of Fame to decrease the PCI size to maybe aid in more strikeouts, but as a whole, as long as I am making an out at a realistic rate, I am not overly concerned with this stat as much as maybe I should be.

BB Allowed - 53 1st. My one pitching anomaly is likely an indicator that i will need to lower the pitch control down a notch in order to miss the zone more often. I simply paint the corner fairly often and would rather force the hitter to make a mistake than make one myself. Because I got at the batter more often, it also results in a few less strikeouts, although I am not entire disappointed in 22nd place, as I am within a group that could easily get me to mid-pack soon.

Home Runs - 53 6th I only bring this up because if I am 6th in the league (rather that my old position of 1st by a large margin), and I am hitting homeruns at a nearly 14% clip, then what the heck percentages are the teams above me hitting at? This league seems home run heavy in general, but I don't believe my sliders influence any of that. Just an observation.

                      Team Stat Summary

Overall, i am very encouraged and surprised with the results from the change. So close to league average in hit variation is fantastic. I look forward to running the numbers as I continue to move along through my season. Same goes for the team stats. I don't feel nearly as out-of-balance with as many of the categories as in the past. I am happy with the increase in batting average as well as the DECREASE in home runs and SLG. I am a lower-end top-third team, and I feel my stats reflect it well.

                      How does it play?

In one word, Awesome. The increased variety of scoring attack has made for very interesting, entertaining games. I used to feel that if I fell behind my several runs early, that it was over. I now am experiencing occasional sustained rallies where I am moving the base runner and scoring them with varying methods (including walks with bases load and wild pitches). It just feels good!

Well, on to games 41-50. What to do about poor Mookie!

Late edit: The Red Sox happily welcome back "The Flyin' Hawaiian" Shane Victorino to the Red Sox. It cost a pricey 7.0 million for one year, but the switch hitter with decent speed should help fill the void left by Mookie Betts...I hope.

                        Fenway,

Definitely have enjoyed following your excitements with sliders in creating the most statistically realistic experience you can. I too have been frustrated with the insane amount of home runs I've accrued in my current Cubs franchise. To put it in perspective, guys like Addison Russell and Javy Baez are knocking bleacher shots like they are Rizzo & Bryant. Going to restart a franchise and use your exact slider set to see how it goes, I'll throw my results in here

Thanks! I have had a lot of fun running the data, especially since it is working like I had hoped. I have relied on these threads for years for advice, tips, and help so I am happy if I can help anybody to have a good gaming experience.

So, while the numbers seemed pretty decent after 30 games, they really settled in nice at 40. So, I would recommend you get in a good sample size to help determine whether it is working for the Cubs or not. I feel that teams are pretty jacked on energy at the beginning of the season, so don't get discouraged if you are hammering the ball initially for 10 games or so.

Now what you should be able to feel from the get-go is the FEEL of the games. The types of hits, how you score runs...if you watch enough baseball on television, you will know if something feels right or feels off.

I look forward to hearing your results!

I've been playing numerous games this week trying to settle in on a set of sliders. Maybe I missed it somewhere...is this on all-star, hall of fame, or legend difficulty level? Both pitching and hitting?

I play on All Star for both hitting and pitching.

Have played a few games with these and have to say I love the feel of the game. Excited to get more of a sample size. How do these look when simming?

Any suggestions if you're using classic pitching and timed hitting?
