There was no logical reason to vote for Ordonez. He had a great year, and was probably #2 though I would have Ortiz right there with him. But A-Rod was clearly the better player.

You can't say clearly the better player and prove it especially based on the fact that you probably saw very few Tiger games. So, without that, you have to go on statistics. The statistics are either identical or slanted in Maggs favor in almost every catergory outside of HR's and RBIs.

Bottomline is.... A-Rod deserved to win the MVP... so did Maggs. When left to choose between the two, A-Rod is probably the choice. But, I don't see how anyone can say with a straight face that he was CLEARLY the better player.

I completely agree. I would have voted for A-Rod in that situation though. I think if you're being impartial you would have voted for A-Rod.

It's almost as if they voted Maggs just to make a point and/or be different.

A-Rod was involved in a Pennant Race/Playoff spot. Maggs was not.

Even with statistics as they are, I would've voted for A-Rod. Defensively Maggs was the better player but I wouldn't be so quick to say the MVP is a statistics based award.

imo if arod isnt on the yanks i dont think they make the playoffs they probably go 4-10 in the month if not for arod's april not only that the whole year arod did so many things to help his team win, maggs did his thing also but you can argue they would be the same wit out maggs this year

I'd probably vote for A-Rod too... I just don't think it's fair to question the writer's integrity (as it has been done on ESPN) based on their vote. Magg's season was incredible. Take away A-Rod's year and look at Ordonez' numbers and they are staggering.

Ok, that's exactly the point I thought you were getting at. Yeah, in this case I completely agree.

It just stinks for Maggs that A-Rod had the season he did. That one crazy month pretty much sealed the deal as well for A-Rod.

Really?????? I'd like to see you argue that. I'd love to see an argument that the Tigers would have won the 88 games that they did without Ordonez. Especially when you consider that their other options in RF would have been Sheff - who was hurt for over a month and only hit .265 despite being a .300 career hitter - or Craig Monroe who hit a whopping .222.

I don't even think it's a question that the Yanks without A-Rod have more offensive weapons than the Tigers. It's not even close.

Especially when you consider that their other options in RF would have been Sheff - who was hurt for over a month and only hit .265 despite being a .300 career hitter - or Craig Monroe who hit a whopping .222.

I don't even think it's a question that the Yanks without A-Rod have more offensive weapons than the Tigers. It's not even close.

Yeah its close, But Alex was still worth a little more than two extra wins to the Yanks. Should he be punished for having a strong lineup around him? Yeah the Yankees probably would have been alright without him (but even thats arguable since the team BA without him in April was like .220) while the Tigers wouldve taken a bit more of a hit, but thats due to the remaining lineup, not the players' production itself.

Because A-Rod was the MVP by basically any definition you could use.

He won basically all the sabermetric stuff, and OPS. And he won mostly all the criteria that the stupid writers actually use except for batting average, like runs, homeruns, rbi's, stolen bases, and being on a good team.

And it's a little weird that the only 2 who didn't vote for him were Detroit based writers, and they handpicked one statistic that tells you very little of the story to justify it.

That's my biggest problem with it. I think they would have more credibility if they had simply said "we got to watch Ordonez all year and saw how important he was to this team" rather than picking out something like BA with RISP and ignoring the fact that Arod's OPS was actually a fraction higher with RISP.

I read the article Clay posted and I think it's pitiful that the writer's excuse is that Ordonez had the best season by a Tiger he's ever seen. That's what he hangs the biggest part of his argument on. There is no way that anyone can say that Ordonez was more valuable to the Tigers than ARod was to the Yankees. The Yankees could've easily tanked the rest of the season in April and May when ARod carried that entire team on his back.

I'd love to see that writer's voting history and see just how he's voted in the past.

While Maggs did have a fantastic season, there are 2 things that make the 2 votes he got questionable:

- both were from Michigan writers.
- Detroit did not make the playoffs.

I'm sorry, but IMO, you can't give an MVP to someone whose team did not make the playoffs. If the person was so valuable, his team would've been in October baseball. Without ARod, the Yankees don't make the postseason for the first time in . . . forever. Without Maggs, Detroit definitely does not get 88 wins, but even with him, they couldn't make the postseason.

I think the story is BS, and I'll think that unless A-Rod officially fires Boras. I think it's just Boras taking the hit for him to improve his image. Maybe the part about A-Rod not knowing it would be announced during the World Series is true. But there's no way that A-Rod was really convinced that the Yankees had no interest in bringing him back before he opted out. Everybody knew that the Yankees wanted him back, and wanted to meet with him before he decided to opt out.

The true story is probably what everyone thought, Boras messed up, the market wasn't that great for him. He realized the Yankees deal would be the best, so he went back.

I'm happy we have the best player in baseball back, but I don't want to hear this "I always wanted to me a Yankee" stuff.
