Yet, here we are 2 weeks later, and he is back with the Yankees. Their foot is in their mouth, but I'm not sure they care at all. The important thing is, they have their man to play 3B.
Steinbrenner made Cashman look pretty dumb in the process. But Cashman is used to being undercut.

I think it was similar to Pettitte where the Yanks' initial offer stayed on the table, it was just assumed that Bora$ would stick to his demand of a $350 million basement. Thus Hank stated that A-Rod's days were done if he opted out because he figured A-Rod wouldn't sign for anything less than $350, which the Yanks wouldn't touch.

We'll never know how much of Hank Steinbrenner's comments were not so much directed at ARod, but at Boras himself. Now that ARod reached out to them personally then they'd be complete morons to not entertain those talks.

Amazingly enough the Yankees will come out of this smelling like roses. Not only do they land the best player in baseball for below market value, but they catch one of the most "feared" player agents in the business in the biggest gaffe we've seen since the birth of free agency as we know it.

          Win-win for the Yankees.

By making the extension offer public earlier, the Yankees avoid looking bad as long as the final contract is what they offered before minus the texas money. The Texas money was really the only reason they've been so adamant about him not opting out, and if it's not an issue anymore, then the Yankees look fine.

Could look even better if Buster Olney is right, he's saying 10 years $220 million. Less than his old contract.

If it's 222 million over 10 then the Yanks won big.

Well the FAN did say A-Rod was leaving $60 million on the table, so I wouldn't be shocked if it was that 10 years, $220 million.

Despite how badly this has looked for A-Rod and Bora$, I think A-Rod could take a huge step back in the right direction if he accepts this "low" offer.

                  Re: A-Rod to Opt Out

As for the whole ordeal of the Yankees refusing to negotiate with Bora$ and the conflicting reports that the players' union would fight it: Any player can tell an agent they want to negotiate their own contract, so as long as A-Rod is okay with Bora$ not being there it is perfectly legal.

Also, it's very interesting to see both sides of the coin as to how the media is taking this. Most of the NY media says Hank and the Yanks are looking great in this situation because they stood their ground and A-Rod came crawling back to them. Despite the fact that A-Rod will be a Yankee again, the the Yankees did stick by their word and never got into a bidding war for A-Rod and are paying under market value for him.

Oh, the Yanks definitely came out the winner in this. I really wondered how in the world Boras would get anyone to pay the money he was touting. If he was a great pitcher, I could see people putting alot of value on him. But not 350 mil. By stating that astronomical number, he knocked out just about every potential suitor there was. Boras' rep as an agent made me think I might not know as much as I thought I did.

Not sure if Yankees are winners yet. Mariano wants 4 years now. Jeter is thinking of a hugh $payday. No other team were even going to come close to what the Yankees are going to pay him. And they're still dealing with Boras.

Absolutely right. Boras, in a rarity, outbid himself. He put his client in a difficult situation.

While the media was going bananas over it, everyone in the smarter circle of baseball knew that no one was going to pay Alex $350 million. I know I went as far to say that Alex wouldn't make more than $20 million a year in the open market.

There's money in baseball but not that much. While GMs do indeed overpay for free agents, they do so with an understanding of what holes they need to fill. There isn't a team in MLB that only needs a 3B/SS. To fork over perhaps their entire budget to one player would be detrimental to the team.

The Yanks held their ground, insisting they wouldn't bid in the open market. Alex has taken himself out of the market. In some ways, this is almost like they extended the opt-out due date and are negotiating in-house.

Now if the Yanks give Mo a fourth year they are suckers.

As great of a reliever Mo has been in his past, there is no team that will pay him $15 million a year to close games.

The only teams in baseball with that money already have closers and follow a philosophy of never overpaying for closers.

Mo should take his money before the Yanks come to their senses because right now they are paying for loyalty and history rather than present skill level.
