    Re: A-Rod to Opt Out

Like I said, Alex won't get $30 million a year.

He'll get less than what the Yankees were offering.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

How much would Babe Ruth be worth with the economics of today's game? A billion?

I believe that means he wanted 350 million from the Yankees if they weren't going to allow him to hit free agency.

              It makes sense.

You pay a premium to not have to compete on the open market for A-rod.

Plus Wouldn't Hicks still have to pick up some of the tab?

Yea, but even if you subtract the $30 million or so the Rangers still owe, that's still a lot more money than I think he'll get on the open market.

I could be wrong, but I think Boras messed this one up.

But he's an expert when it comes to this, so maybe he'll surprise everyone.

It definitely seems like Boras messed up, but at the same time I can see the Cubs or somebody pulling a Tom Hicks and paying him a lot more than the next closest bidder.

IF A-Rod happens to end up signing for less than Boras has been talking about then does anyone else expect a "I'm not about the money but I am happy to be joining the Cubs/Giants/Marlins(lol)" type of press release? I am!

I imagine that the 350 million was to be the starting point of negotiations with the Yankees.

                          Boras: We want 350 million.
Yankees: Well that's an interesting starting offer but our bean counters say nobody else can possibly afford more than 150-200 million IF they want to commit to A-Rod for that long.
                          Boras: Screw you. *click*
                          Yankees: Sigh. Where's Wilson's number.

I don't think it's "if" but more like "when" Arod signs for less than Boras is asking for. If the Red Sox and/or the Yankees do not get involved in the bidding for Payrod Boras will not be able to use those teams against the other teams trying to drive up he price. Without the Sox/Yanks Boras may have a hard time getting $200 million for Arod, let alone $300 million.

More excuses from Alex and Boras.

They are really screaming for Yankee involvment to drive up the price.

They're begging for it. Didn't Boras use the Yanks to drive up the price on Zito last year? Or was that the Mets? Maybe both. If worse comes to worse he can just bs some incompetent gm. Also, does Boras have a muzzle on Arod? The guy hasn't said a word since the season ended. All of his "statements" come through sources and Boras.
