Don't you EVER read my blog? It's gotten a lot better.

I just don't understand it. Paul Molitor spent over half of his career at DH and he got in on the first ballot despite having far inferior numbers to Edgar. Oh wait, yes I do understand. Idiots like Jon Heyman are allowed to vote on the Hall.

Frank Thomas will be the first primary DH to get in.

The only surprise about the results is that there are still people who are surprised by the results. It's pretty much exactly the same group of writers who do the voting year after year. Go back through HOF voting over the last 20 years, you'll see patterns which make predicting vote totals not all that difficult.

That's why Stephen Brunt of the Globe and Mail gave up his BBWAA membership a couple years ago. He saw all the BS and had had enough. I wish more guys who are serious about the voting would do the same. At least it'd expose how ludicrous the process is.

Molitor was primarily a position player for his first 13 seasons and a primary DH for his last 8 (Molitor appeared in 1495 games in the field and 1174 as a DH, whereas Edgar appeared in 591 games in the field and 1412 as a DH) . Molitor finished with over 3300 hits. Molitor was a World Series MVP.

I'm not defending the Heymans of this world, but that's how they think.

Quit being logical Ewing, this is the BBWAA we're talking about.

They provide us logic like this...

For me, it's the same with Hall of Famers. Some guys just strike you as Cooperstown-worthy and others do not. Edgar Martinez was a very fine hitter, but I never said to myself, "The Mariners are coming to Fenway this weekend. I wonder how the Sox are going to pitch to Edgar Martinez?''

It was different with players like Eddie Murray and Jim Rice. They were feared.

Here's a fun comparison between two players on the ballot this year.

                        Player A: .279/.323/.482, 119 OPS+
                        Player B: .291/.363/.510, 126 OPS+

Player A is Andre Dawson, he is now in the Hall Of Fame. Player B is Ellis Burks, he received 0.4% of the vote

In fairness to Molitor, he played a LOT longer than Edgar did (and mostly at a high level). And guys who can hit and field are more valuable than those who can just hit. I have no problem with Edgar's HOF candidacy, and he was certainly the better hitter, but if you're implying that he's a worthier Hall of Famer than Molitor, I believe you're very wrong.

One thing I've never understood is the "he's a HOF, but not first ballot" thing the circle jerking Baseball Writers do...either someone's a Hall of Famer or not, quit being little girls who whine how someone wasn't nice to them so they'll hold their vote for this year.

First ballot is a relative term to me, if you trying to get in on a year like the Nolan Ryan, George Brett, and Robin Yount year then it may not be possible to be a first ballot player, on a year like this if you aren't a first ballot player then you aren't a HOFer.

I understand the value of the OPS+, but you can't just throw it out there and expect that to be the end all of a player's value.

Burks was an MVP candidate once in 22 years (1996 when he finished 3rd) and that was playing half his games at Coors Field.

Dawson won an MVP and was #2 twice more. Does that erase those numbers you put up there? No, but it does show you that the folks who vote on these things considered Dawson to be the best or among the best in the game when he played...not so much with Burks.
