Yeah, there has to be room for situational strategery. Though I do like how they poke fun at the old school scouts a bit, I recall they had Billy Beane disregarding a player's inability to run or field because he has a high OBP. This was before all the defensive metrics came in, lol.

I just finished Breaking Bad for the 2nd time last night. Seems well timed. Maybe they'll trade him to the Rockies so he can keep developing with the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Are you suggesting that was made up? It was played out in the movie exactly the way it was portrayed in the book.

What I'm suggesting is that had that scene taken place today Billy Beane and his sabermetric guru might not be solely focused on OBP, what with fielding metrics now available for consideration.

Did you read the book by chance? It was much deeper and involved than the way the movie played it to be.

my takeaway from Moneyball was how to be competitive on a shoestring budget and not be an easy pushover to beat. and before you can move on to a championship winner, you first have to be a championship contender . I also feel like Moneyball was partly responsible for Tampa's 2008 pennant and the 2013 Pirates ending 20 years of losing (which also provided another of my favorite baseball books to go with Moneyball: Big Data)

Meanwhile, casual audiences have no idea of the Big 3, Miguel Tejada, or Eric Chavez... and believe the takeaway is that the A's won 20 games in a row because Billy Beane told Scott Hatteberg to take more pitches.

the real mistake Beane made, (and I don't like speaking ill of the deceased) was letting someone with no experience like
Philip Seymour Hoffman manage his club

And Jermaine Dye was a stud player too. But sometimes it's best to not let the whole truth get in the way of a good story, and Moneyball is a great story. To me it's the best sports movie of all time. (narrowly beating out Major League 3: Back To The Minors. kidding.)

It's still interesting how one terrible half season put Jermaine Dye out of baseball.

Oh, don't get me wrong... the film is fantastic. I was willing to let almost every creative liberty slide for the sake of a great piece of cinema and something that touches to the core of a time in baseball that I loved more than any other, for a story quite unlike any other that has literally evolved to change the game (alongside Statcast) for the next two decades.

It's probably right near one of the best sports movies of all time for me. I can't crown it that without thinking up my list in full, but it is quite beautiful art, from the very beginning shot to the ending shot.

Moneyball just didn't do it for me. I'd still give it a thumb and a half up, but in the 5 years before Moneyball the movie release and the five years after, I'd rank it fourth behind Trouble With The Curve, Million Dollar Arm and Benchwarmers. when it comes to baseball, I've always preferred fictional to based on true events. from Bang the Drum Slowly to the Natural to Bull Durham. as for reality baseball movies, 8 Men Out is my gold standard for true story baseball movies

Still some majestic jerseys around some warehouses.

Managed to get a Vladdy jersey for $30(tax and shipping included)! Very likely just a heat pressed jersey, though some reviews claimed its stitched, so it's a $30 gamble to see if I luck out on a stitched model.

To think, Nike is same quality and everything, and they're charging $150.

I watched game 7 of the 86 World Series last night. It was 35 years ago and we all know the game has changed but wow it is so much different watching a full game. No graphics on the screen showing the score or inning and there wasn’t really anyone in the crowd wearing fan gear except hats. Leading off the bottom of the second inning Gary Carter, the cleanup hitter drops down a bunt. No overshift, he just tries to drop one down because the 3b was playing back. I know the batters stepping out and pitchers taking forever is currently an issue but I couldn’t believe how fast they were playing. No pitchers constantly shaking off the catcher, it moved at a pace like when I play the show and skip all the cut scenes. It’s a shame than Vin Scully didn’t continue calling the World Series until he retired. That guy is a treasure

thank the maker Manferd wasn't commish back in '86; he'd have thought that game 7 needed shortened. it was, at 3:11 minutes, 6 minutes longer than games today. and game 6 was an hour longer albeit also an inning longer
