    Re: MLB Off-Topic

When senior officials from the Biden administration spoke with Major League Baseball last week, the Players Association did not wish to be part of the conversation, believing it would be pressured into delaying the season.

The union, by scheduling its own discussion with the same officials for a later date, avoided hearing what the government representatives suggested to MLB, according to sources: a one-month delay, with the idea of getting players vaccinated in time to start the season.

The delay will not take place, unless COVID-19 dictates otherwise. The union Monday rejected a proposal from the league to shorten the season to 154 games and pay them for 162, saying the deal was not enough of an improvement over its current situation under the sport’s collective bargaining agreement.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

The government officials, according to sources, told MLB their confidence in players getting vaccinated before a delayed opening stemmed from the expected introduction of the new Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Biden administration’s top medical adviser, said Wednesday that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine could be authorized for emergency use “within a week or so.”

The league did not share with the union details from their meeting with the government but conveyed them to team presidents on a call Wednesday. In the union’s view, further discussion about a delay is no longer relevant or constructive. The league said in a statement Monday it is moving forward and instructing clubs to report for an on-time start to spring training and the regular season, subject to reaching an agreement with the union on health and safety protocols. The parties continue to discuss the protocols, sources say.

There is no guarantee a delay of one month would be enough to improve the players’ chances of staying safe or ensure they would get the vaccine. But many team employees, at the executive level and below, are nervous about reporting in two weeks to Florida and Arizona, where the rates of infection are declining but remain high. Those employees express particular concern for the safety of older coaches, managers, umpires and staffers who are more vulnerable to COVID-19.

MLB Network really gonna almost give me a heart attack.

I was channel flipping, suddenly landed on MLBN for a few seconds, saw a headline while I changed to another channel, then realized what the headline said and had to flip back in a panic, but they went to commercial so I had to look it up online.

The headline said "Celebrating the life of Cito Gaston". Obviously my first thought there was that something bad happened. Thankfully nothing did and it turns out he was just a guest on the show.

        Per Ken Rosenthal, and others

The BBWAA has voted to remove J.G. Taylor Spink’s name from its award to a writer for “meritorious contributions to baseball.” Spink was publisher of the Sporting News at a time when the publication portrayed Blacks in racist and stereotypical terms. No decision yet on renaming.

                  Re: MLB Off-Topic

Fewer home runs might be hit this year in baseball, sacrifices on the path to efficiency and standardization. Multiple sources confirm the ball’s construction will change slightly, and five more teams are adding humidors for ball storage — all parts of MLB’s attempt to reduce the wild recent year-to-year swings in home run rates league-wide.

The Athletic obtained an internal memo Major League Baseball sent Friday to general managers, assistant general managers, and equipment managers outlining minor changes that might combine to reduce offense slightly in the 2021 season. The combined effects might seem imperceptible to fans and perhaps even those on the field, but past history suggests very small changes to the ball’s construction can be a big deal.

                  --------------------------------------------------------------------

The MLB memo includes a footnote that says an independent lab found that fly balls that went over 375 feet lost one to two feet of batted ball distance with the new ball. That also sounds like no big deal, but every 3.3 feet of distance increases the likelihood of a home run by ten percent. An analyst familiar with the physics and math of this situation said the relationship was linear enough to estimate that this change will reduce home run rates by around five percent.

“It’ll be like adding five feet of outfield walls to every wall in the big leagues,” the analyst said. But it’s hard to know the specifics without knowing what the drag difference will be. The memo mentions nothing about the drag, which has been a major factor in differences in how the ball has performed in the last few years. Drag is more difficult to control than bounciness, one source said. Others felt the drag difference would be negligible.
Reaction within the league’s front offices and coaching ranks was mixed.

                  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Language in the rule book suggests a new ball would require the approval of the rules committee —“Manufacturers who plan innovative changes in baseball equipment for professional baseball leagues should submit same to the Official Playing Rules Committee prior to production,” says a section in rules 3.01-3.09 concerning the ball. One source felt this wasn’t an innovation, though, because the ball’s COR will still be within MLB’s established (though wide) range, and so the commissioner’s office didn’t get input from the Rules Committee.

The Competition Committee was consulted, though, in part because with all the discussion of the ball in recent years, MLB says it is trying to be transparent about its process. The ball changes, coupled with the added humidors and the announcement the league will appoint game day compliance monitors to check the application of mud in every stadium, figures to have some effect on offense in the league this year, with most of the arrows pointing down on league-wide home run rates.

But how much will it alter the game overall? That remains to be seen.

MLB is trying to reduce variance; past history suggests very small changes to the ball’s construction can be a big deal.

                    Re: MLB Off-Topic

Why not move the batters box away from the plate half a ball's width or so?

Gives pitchers the outside corner back, after box crowding hitters essentially took it away.

Makes pulling the ball a little more difficult, thus encouraging Opposite field hitting, and likely reducing the effectiveness of the shift.

I actually liked the juiced balls.

Baseball with more offense is more exciting.

Games getting to historic game lengths and reduced offence is the opposite of what should be happening.

It's like they're taking the worst changes we've seen the past few years, and only keeping those ones.

Extra inning runner on 2nd, 7 inning doubleheader will be happening for 2021.

No universal DH, no expanded playoffs.

I really hope some drastic things happen in the next CBA. I'd take a lockout (for the offseason only) to get something done.

You think a lockout during the time when players aren't being paid by, or doing anything directly with, the organization will get something to happen?
