Only 4 Royals starting at the ASG.

Congrats North America. It would've been real embarrassing for the sport if Infante had been named starter over Altuve or Kipnis.

Those of us rooting for chaos are extremely disappointed.

To me it wouldn't have been embarrassing, because basically this is just a popularity vote. But thankfully people woke up and gave us the boring starting lineup we were all craving lol.

I knew all along MLB would fix it. If they're going to fix the face of MLB contest there's no way in hell they weren't going to fix the All Star voting.

I don't get the Pirates making this trade. If they have an injury in the rotation, I'm not sure who they can turn to that would be as viable as Richard.

          Great pickup for the Cubs.

The move was precipitated by an upward-mobility clause in Richard’s contract that kicked in Tuesday and opened a 72-hour window in which major-league clubs could inquire about him. The Cubs did so, giving the Pirates the options of either promoting him to their active roster or trading him.
They didn't have any room for him in the majors.

He looked really good Saturday. If he can keep it up, he may have saved the Cubs from giving up better prospects for a bigger name SP at the deadline.

Lol, I didn't either. I'd never heard the guys name mentioned as a pitcher that would be coming up and I've heard a lot of plan B scenario's now that Worrley isn't pitching well so I was curious.

I didn't even know of the existence of such a clause in contracts.

Yea they are common for guys that have some major league experience and get signed to minor league contracts.

What do you guys think about the ASG requirement that every team be represented? I understand why they do it but how about we keep it on a merit basis? Fan votes can (sometimes) be a joke and forcing a guy from an awful team is bad too.

I think it needs to stay because of East coast bias alone. The west coast teams are really underrepresented at times with players that should be going based on merit alone.

If it weren't for that I would agree with you on getting rid of it.

It really depends on the player to be honest. The Red Sox suck this year, but Xander Bogaerts or Hanley Ramirez are having great seasons. If Hanley was going to be coming off the bench as a reserve would be perfect. He makes a great DH. He is hitting .277 with 18 HR's and 43 RBI. He also has OPS of .827. I would say he should be in the ASG over a guy like Alcides Escobar.

Just throwing stuff out there, but I would like for the fans vote to count for 51% (so you can still claim that "fans choose the starters") but members of the BBWAA (I know some would suggest players and/or coaches having a say) would count for the other 49% for the starters and 100% of the reserves but still preserve the by now "traditional" last in player voted in by the fans.

My take is that there are 34 players per All-Star Roster. Surely taking one player from every team doesn't steal too many roster spots. And just because a team is awful doesn't mean they don't have great players worthy of being an All-Star.

I've always liked it. With rosters at 35 now, what's the harm in making sure every team is represented at the game's premier summer event?
