    Re: MLB Off-Topic

I think I know what answer probably will be,but gonna ask anyways.

Lets say a pitcher throws inside to a batter, the ball doesn't hit him, but the batter leans out of the way to avoid the ball. While leaning away from the ball, the bat of the batter happens to cross the plate. Should that count as a strike?

Obviously there was no intention of swinging, the batter was simply trying to get out of the way, so should that even count as a strike or not since the ball is clearly outside the strikezone in this situation.

      It counts, intent or not.

Not only do I not agree with that, I also don't think that's true. There must be intent to swing. And I'm talking "He started to swing sorta then realized it was coming in on him" counts as a swing.

However, a situation where a swing wasn't ever initiated and a batter is hit will rarely occur with a bat also crossing that invisible plane, so I guess we just need to see a video example of that for me to show you what I mean by something that shouldn't be called a swing, because in most of these instances I think it should be since the batter literally initiated intent to swing.

I have no idea how you would lean out of the way of the pitch, with no intention to swing, and have the bat cross the plate (which isn't the definition of a swing anyway).

That's what I was saying. Somebody show me a clip where the initial intent wasn't to swing though, and I'll probably say he shouldn't be called for a swing.

Why is Matt Harvey "announcing" that he'll pitch in the post season? I don't think I've ever seen that before. He's not on a DL. He hasn't been out any extended time this season from what I know. So why the announcement?

Because with the "180 innings cap" some thought he might not pitch in the playoffs if the Mets made it. Plus good PR.

                    It is the mini-decision.

Ironically, Strasburg is another Boras client...why he is stupid enough to try and have the Mets do the same thing (with the Nats saga a couple of years back) is beyond me.

Ok then, it's bottom of 6th in Jays-O's game on Saturday. Jose Bautistas at bat. Two pitches inside he tried getting out of way, but umps called it strike since his bat went across.

I've only seen it when it happened live on tv, so I never got to look back at it either and see if maybe he did actually swing during that moment.

Never saw something like that happen which is why I was wondering about it, that and the fact that a Jays player(wasn't Bautista) got ejected for chirping the ump inbetween innings about that call(the ump randomly walked by the Jays dugout after the inning ended, before players even spoke out to him about it,and once he walked by,players were chirping him on that call, and somehow he picked out one guy out of multiple guys talking to him once he did pass by their dugout, to eject lol)

Not questioning the ejection or anything, just wanted to see if they did have any grounds to be upset on that play since like I said,I didn't see anything like that before, let alone two times in the same at bat.

Just saw it. The swing was initiated, and it nearly doesn't matter how long it continued thereafter.

But Jr. is also right, that like there is no rule in a balk which refers to a 45 degree angle, there is also no rule in which the barrel must break a certain plane to be registered as a swing. Yet, we deem both as such because they are naturally the case of what causes us to commit to one or the other. In Bautista's case, although he tried to get out of the way, it was still a swing. It just was.

There are other cases which I'm sure I could probably act out that can make you cross any said plane without making a swing attempt, but it would be hard to fabricate. Though, let's just say that he got a little bit of a start and then bailed all the way to the ground, essentially to the point where it wasn't ever really his arms moving, but his body flailing a full rotation just to dive out of the way of a pitch. I don't think I would call that a swing, then.

I would love to see video of this, because I just can't picture what is being described.

My best guess is that he started a swing, and in the process of getting out of the way, opened up and his bat continued along a "swing" path. Which should definitely be considered an attempt at the ball.
