I hate to name-drop in this case, but sometimes it's dependent on the day or situation, or what have you.

I've had the luxury of meeting my favorite baseball player of all time, and it was a dream come true. No photo request or autograph, but just the pleasure of meeting him. He was very nice to me, and he didn't have to be. None of these guys have to be, I guess. Sad to be ignored though as well.

Likewise, Tony Gwynn is known to be a great guy on and off the field as well, and he very much is! But as a coach, he has had "don't talk to me" kinds of moments. Maybe the team is struggling, maybe he has a lot to focus on, or maybe he is just having a bad day. As a coach myself, I can empathize with that. Maybe that's what Joc is going through.

Also, Bonds returned for reasons we are not all sure of. I for one think he can go out there and do the daily grind of still being a player, but that is just wishful thinking on my end. He might be thinking about the years he has left on the HOF ballot and is trying to rekindle every bone in his body that he can (though this wouldn't have helped out). Or, perhaps, he is just putting his career behind him for once, including the fame and stardom that went with it, and he just truly wants to return as a coach.

A photo opportunity for the player that he was might be something he's trying to leave behind. It might be the same way that a Harry Potter fanatic might be trying to get a selfie with Daniel Radcliffe, or something along those lines if that makes sense. Or better yet, because we all know he despises it at this point, think Daniel Craig and James Bond. There is a life they might be trying to leave completely behind, and even though they still remain in the same line of work they are looking to play a different role.

Yeah, I'm finding a need to defend the guy because he is still my favorite. Everyone here knows it, so call me biased. I'm just saying that while he could be an ***, there are also other explanations. Furthermore, if Joc did this a week earlier or a week later, maybe he would have gotten the photo that he wanted.

What I can't blame Joc for though is feeling mentally deflated after that. That has to be heartwrenching. I would feel the same way, even to this day at 27 years old, if I ran into him again and asked for the same thing, even though I had already met him before. But to do it the first time? That's a heavy impact, especially on a guy in the same business that is asked to perform that day. That could have brought him up to another level, and instead it's going to make him lose sleep at night.

Bonds has always and will always remain a jerk IMO.

I can kinda see it if it was a fan (still would make him a jerk but we all know fans can intrude at the worst times) but this was a MLB player. Would it kill Bonds to take one stinkin' picture with someone who idolized you as a kid?!

I feel the opposite actually. It'd make more sense to take a picture with a fan, what's this guy from the team I'm coaching against coming up to me before a game and asking me for a picture for? Not that he couldn't have taken it, but I also don't understand when people get mad at celebrities for this kind of stuff. People just don't want to be bothered sometimes.

I thought with the new rule regarding being in the box would move things along but really, it's the same old crap. Have we even seen a situation where a pitcher was able to throw a pitch and get an automatic strike which was part of the rule if the batter took too long?
I haven't seen a case where this has happened. I think the umps are loathe to do this and I can understand. But that's where the league needs to provide a mandate that they start calling auto strikes or balls if guys are taking too long.

It's just an aesthetics thing to me I guess. If we're going to have the pitcher point to first and the guy doesn't even have to get in the box it just looks stupid. Bryce can sit Indian style in the on deck circle with no bat and just wait for the signal. Just makes no sense.
Agreed. How many intentional walks do we see in a whole day of games? Surely not so much that it's adding valuable minutes to each game.
I'm too lazy to do it, but I bet if I looked on Youtube for auto-walks the total amount would be less than 30s per. So what are they really doing?

Like someone said, is this to appease the 12 year old with ADHD who can't help but go to his iPad the minute an auto-walk occurs?
          Yeesh.

I guess I'm getting old in a sense because I love the slow pace of baseball. It's not like any other sport. I don't feel like I'm rushed at a game. A day at the ballpark is like enjoying a slice of heaven.
The sites, sounds, smells... is there anything better?
While I want the game to get rid of all the needless between-pitch garbage, I really enjoy the relaxed nature of the sport.
And I think younger kids today could use an outlet that doesn't bombard them with constant action, loud sounds and an obnoxious environment.

I have too many things to say about the intentional walk, but it also prevents a chance of this happening:

Its not so much the fact that he didn't take a picture with him, its the fact that he just flat out ignored Joc as if he didn't exist, that he wasn't even worth acknowledging.

He could've very easily said "no thank you" or even "no" instead of being an ***-hat.

One of the many reasons he's coaching in Florida and not SF. Guy has zero tact or social skills. It went over slightly better when he was hitting 70 HR. Teammates and coaches still hated him.

The problem with baseball is that it's a GREAT spectator sport but as a television product it can drag. So I can see the bind that it puts some people in with trying to increase the pace of play. What is leisurely and entertaining at the ballpark is like watching paint dry on TV.

I think that's a great point; baseball is great when I'm in person but I'll admit to channel surfing when watching it on TV.

There still are ways to improve the game without messing up the "history" of the game. A couple of quick "no-brainers" to me:

It takes like 5 minutes for a pitching change; that can be sped up for sure.

I think catcher/coach/manager meetings on the mound can be limited to 1 per inning..

The intentional walk rule isn't about speeding up the game, it's about the lack of action.

Manfred spoke about this when it was announced that games are longer this year than last year to this point. He's not worried about the time length, per say, but what is happening within a game. He wants more action, less standing around.

This is the idea behind changing the strike zone, too. You raise the bottom, hitters are more likely to put pitches in play. This will probably backfire early on until pitchers get used to it, but in the end it should do as it is intended by giving hitters more hittable pitches as strikes.
