I've honestly never wanted a "death" report to be a hoax more than this one...I keep looking and hoping to see that everyone has been duped, but with the Marlins releasing their statement I'd say that won't happen. So sad...

Good decision to cancel the game. Too heavy right now.

First guy I thought to was Oscar Tavares. He obviously didn't have the career, however young, Fernandez has had, but he was going to be really good. Not that their baseball ability matters in a loss of life, but of course the bigger the name the more shocking the news.

Tough day for the Marlins, baseball and the fans. And it still doesn't even compare to his family and friends grief. Absolutely tragic.

There are players that you hate playing because they're good and then there are players that you don't mind playing because they're at such a high level and getting to watch them is a treat. Jose Fernandez was the latter. He was the perfect mix of talent and personality with a story that made it impossible not to root for him.

Baseball lost not only a great player but a great representative of the game today and it will hurt for some time.

          RIP Jose.

Apparently the boat hit some rocks and overturned, and Fernandez and two others were trapped underneath.

Sad day here in Tampa. I got the awful news as soon as I woke up. RIP Jose....
I remember go to watch him pitch both his Jr and Sr against my alma mater and he was amazing to watch a 17 yr old command the mound the way he did. Many said we was the best high school pitcher in Tampa since Doc Gooden. I don't think I will be finishing my franchise with Mia now....

The only questionable thing about all this is why was he on a boat at 3AM the day of a start?

Didn't his start get pushed back a day?

Shocking news. Everything you heard about him gave the impression he was a great guy. I feel for his family and unborn child. Just an awful situation.

It was, but they had pushed him back to Monday. That said, the accident was found at 3 AM, that doesn't mean it happened at 3 AM.

It maybe...I'm sure facts are all over the place. What I had read is they got a call around 3 AM that an accident had been found. I know the bodies were found at 315 by the Coast Guard.
