You could TELL he ENJOYED baseball and playing it.

    So heart wrenching.

I can't believe this. For some reason you always think our athletes are indestructible.

I am old enough to remember when Steve Olin and Tim Crews died in a boating accident. That was pretty traumatic as a kid. This a really ****ty feeling as an adult.

          Shocking. Surreal. Saddening.

I had to re-read the headline about 5 times. This kind of thing just doesn't happen to a baseball player these days (same with Oscar Taveras). Let alone one of the best in the game like 24 y/o ace Jose Fernandez.

I give Miami a lot of credit if they play any of their remaining games this season. I don't even know how you can think about baseball right now if you're close to this situation.

I'll admit that when I have a choice of a broadcast to listen to, Vin Scully is not on the top of my list. But I admire the man and his legacy he leaves with the game, and I'll miss him for that much at the very least.

This is a very touching tribute I'm watching for him right now. I hope he can sit in his chair at his home and announce his own games while on mute, for years to come.

On the last Dodgers-Giants game of the season, I'll be sure to select his broadcast on MLB.TV and listen to the whole thing, if just for one more time. It'll even be a tear-jerker for me.

What a wonderful scene at Dodgers Stadium today. Congrats to the Dodgers on clinching and sending Vin Scully off with a call to remember.

As a die hard Mets fan Jose was supposed to pitch against us tonight knowing that makes this harder for me in a way. All the pre game coverage has got me really down. This is a rough one to deal with 24 years old at the top of his profession and by all accounts an amazing human being. My heart goes out to his family, us fellow baseball fans and Marlins fans in particular. I apologize if this seems like i'm rambling it's hard too process.

                      Re: MLB Off-Topic

Ortiz wrote a Players Tribune piece to Yankees fans... I'm indifferent. He is, for people my age, the embodiment of the rivalry these teams have. It's going to be weird not seeing him in the lineup after this season, it'll probably take half my hate of the Red Sox away right off the top. My 3 favorite quotes:

"You gotta be careful. You guys don't have Mariano no more, you know what I'm saying?" LOL I hate him but this is hilarious, rival kicking us while we're down I respect it

"The Red Sox let me be me. You see my beard? The Yankees wouldn't let me have that beard. I'd be shaving twice a day. But it goes beyond that. The Red Sox let me say what I feel. They let me by myself. If I was a Yankee, I'd be just like my boy, DJ. You know "One game at a time." I don't know why I like this so much, it doesn't show the difference in the teams as much as the perception, as obviously the Yankees didn't tell Jeter how to talk to the media, this ties into the facial hair policy. The franchise has an aura that permeates everything we do, even when the team name is irrelevant to what's happening.

"Some players were born to be Yankees, you know what I'm saying? I was born to play against the Yankees." That's just badass.

The whole mooning movement is just dumb, no way that happens, but he will get booed, as he should be, and he will bask in being treated the way very few players are in NY, as someone who made fans feel legit fear every time we saw him. It's a shame we'll have to sit through some awkward presentation before the game on Sunday, maybe they'll make it a reel of all of his strikeouts like the Red Sox putting Mo blowing the 2004 ALCS in their tribute for him.

And I'm no A-Rod fan, but it kills me how he is being ignored in all this, even by Ortiz. The Red Sox refused to honor him in anyway, and now Ortiz names everybody BUT him lol even Moose. Just weird.

Funny he wrote that. I was just thinking this morning how David Ortiz would not be Big Papi if the Yanks held onto him.

I love this team but they are so insufferable with the rules and act proper crap.

I don't mind most of it. The hair and facial hair policy isn't necessary but George was a military guy so I understand it. Honestly I never noticed it growing up, I'm from a military household and uniform has always included that kind of stuff in my mind. It doesn't mean anything but I do take stuff from it anyway, like when Johnny Damon signed and cutoff the caveman hair. Also when David Price came out and said he wouldn't sign here because he didn't want to shave his beard, or when Cashner says he won't re-sign with the Marlins because of their policy. It just makes me think "Really? They're paying you millions of dollars, and you'd put your beard over a chance to win? Yeah I don't want you on my team anyway."

I think a lot of the way the team acts was just the combination of Bernie coming up and being so nice and hardworking, then Mo comes up and he's the most humble guy ever, then Jeter, then Joe comes in and manages it for a decade. No one was going to come in and change the way the team played or acted. It'll relax as time goes by, I think some of it already did like a few years ago when we had Melky and Cano and everyone had so much fun during the walkoffs with AJ pieing guys and A-Rod chasing down helmets. It's all cyclical. Gary and the new crew have been groomed in that same way by Cashman though so it might not go away too soon .

Eh, I think if it was a sure thing they'd win a WS if they signed with NYY, that beard would disappear with the quickness.

But when there are other, good, possibly even better destinations, the facial hair policy is just one detractor from their offer.

I understand why they would have something like that, but I also understand why it's like, "It's my beard. You can't control what I do with it." I mean, they can and do but you get the point.

What if the Yanks were really bad for a solid stretch of years. Do you think they would relax their policy? I could see something like that happening down the line if the Yanks were ever to be terrible for years on end. It's not a big deal today, but when there's a culture of losing, it's little things like that that get magnified.

The only thing I think that would change it is if the Steinbrenner family sold the team, other than that I doubt it goes anywhere. The team being bad definitely wouldn't change it, that would just look bad from a PR standpoint and the Yankees won't show weakness. You see how close we were to torpedoing our future in the hopes of snagging a wild card spot lol.

                                Just for fun....

ESPN's baseball experts forecast the 2016 season, and the Chicago Cubs are a popular pick to be the last team standing in October.

8/31 people picked Boston to win the division, 10/31 picked Texas, 11/31 picked Cleveland.
