      TITLE II—SAVE AMERICA’S PASTIME ACT

Passan tweets: "The continued underpayment of minor league baseball players is nearly law. On Page 1,967 of the new omnibus bill is an amendment that exempts minor league players from federal labor law. If Congress passes the bill by Friday, it's official."

The Bill is here on page 1967: http://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/...-RCP115-66.pdf

The Bill says that it's ok to pay MilB guys a 40 hour minimum wage with no compensation for "the number of hours the employee devotes to baseball related activities." It literally codifies into law that MiLB players qualify as exempt from FLSA overtime and minimum wage regulations (under FLSA, you're theoretically only exempt if you're a "bona fide" executive, administrative, professional or outside sales employee, with "professional" applying to performing office or non-manual labor and earning at least $100,000 per year). So when this passes, it will be federal law that a MiLB player only has to be paid $7.25x40 per week during the season, even if they spend 80 hours at the park.

Not only is it going to suppress MiLB salaries, but it could kill multiple low level Indy Leagues. Let's hope there is, or there will be an exception for Indy Leagues. Only way for a lot of guys to get a foot in the door, no matter how people on the outside view it. It's an opportunity.

Say goodbye to Daniel Nava, nope David Peralta won't make his comeback as an outfielder.

If the 'Save America's Pastime' act passes, there will likely be significantly fewer independent league baseball teams around the country this year as some leagues will likely be put out of business by the increased costs required for players salaries.

Why would it kill Indie leagues? They could potentially pay quality minor league players more without an affiliate demanding lower salaries.

Not all Indy Leagues, the Atlantic League won't be effected. American Association and Can Am should probably be alright.

The way Cooper states it in the article, is:

At the affiliated level that means that players will largely continue to be paid as they are paid currently, although a few players making the minimum salary will get a modest boost, because the new bill mandates that all baseball employees receive minimum wage for 40 hours a week ($290 a week).

But the new regulations will affect affiliated and independent leagues (which are not tied to Major League Baseball) equally, as the bill specifies only that it applies to those who play baseball professionally.
So players would have to be paid $290 per week, he says there's no distinction between affiliated or indie. A lot of leagues pay much much less than that, and still struggle to operate.

Frontier League minimum is $650 per month, USPBL, Empire, Pacific Association, Pecos. They all pay less than that. So if these teams had to pay $290 per week to players, they wouldn't be able to afford it.

                    Question.

What is your 2nd favorite MLB baseball team and why?

Obviously I am a diehard Cubs fan, always have been and always will be, but I've taken a liking to some AL teams over the years. I pull for the Tigers (in spite of 1945) because I lived in Michigan for a while. I also enjoy the Twins because there was a MiLB affiliate back when called the Kenosha Twins and that was pretty close to where I grew up. Saw a bunch of storied Twins players go through there, like Chuck Knoblauch, Ron Coomer, etc etc. I also like the Oakland A's a bit. I'm actually not sure why, but it might have something to do with Moneyball (I detested the A's back when it was the Bash Brothers and they seemed flat out too good at the time...)

I wonder if anyone else has secondary, tertiary favorite teams...

I guess I would have to say my second favorite team after the A's is the Pirates by default. I can't stay up late enough to watch the A's much anymore unfortunately so most of the baseball is watch is actually the Pirates anyway nowadays.

Until 2009 I always lived in AAA cities and I never really attached the local team with their MLB affiliate.

                        Easy. Atlanta Braves.

Always has been since the TBS Superstation days. Had my favorite pitcher of all time (Maddux), and they always had plenty of easy players to love. Not to mention I'm a big Cox guy. Yeah, I said it.

They are the main reason I stay a premium MLB.TV subscriber, and of course I am them in my franchise for The Show. Wish I was able to check out Turner Field once in my life.

I don't really have a 2nd favorite team as it can change every so often but the last couple seasons i've been on the Brewers bandwagon. I suppose if that fascination with the Brew Crew dies and if AA is still there i'll be rooting for the Braves.

Anyways, here's what the Buffalo Bisons will be wearing for their Sunday home games this season:
