      Hmm...am I that much of a contrarian? I didn't realize that...lol.

I am really asking though about Votto. It's an odd response, IMO, and I'm open to hearing why people are responding that way/expecting the apology.

I think people were shocked at the blunt nature of his original response and how much he seemed to thumb his nose at Canada. It was out of character for him as he's never really said anything THAT forcefully.

Yes, you do come off as a contrarian at times. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I think your response to the Votto thing sort of illustrated that streak.

As for Votto...I imagine that Canadian Baseball is a bit of a small-ish fraternity when compared to more established US, Japanese, or Latin American talent factories. In that sense, it's a bit strange to bad mouth your compatriots. And even if you feel that way, I think there's no need to express it in the scorching hot taek way that he did. Not only that, but if you juxtapose Votto's response (which was totally unprovoked) to the sort of placid, docile stereotype of all things Canada--very odd. He also won Canada's award for sportsman of the year last year (forgot what it's called).

Put it this way...let's say Mike Trout goes overseas to play in the Nippon League. He's interviewed and blasts American Baseball the same way Votto did Canadian Baseball--can you imagine US baseball fans would be pretty upset and blindsided by that? Not only that he felt that way, but that he expressed it gratuitously the way he did. We've turned on people for far more minor reasons than that.

Hmm...I'll have to watch out for that because that isn't my intention.

See, this is a great analogy...and I'm sure there would be US baseball fans who would be upset. I honestly wouldn't care...he's free to have his opinion and honestly, I would evaluate it. Maybe he's right...maybe baseball in the US garbage, etc. Maybe he's wrong...regardless, it's his opinion and he's free to have it. It doesn't bother me.

It bothered me on a few levels, but mostly as a volunteer myself.
I'm heavily involved in our local baseball association and it feels like we're always fighting an uphill battle against spring/summer hockey and soccer.
There are thousands of people like myself who pour their heart and soul in this sport and do what we can to promote it.
Votto clearly benefited from his Canadian baseball upbringing so his harsh opinion erks me as a volunteer who spends hundreds of hours a season promoting this amazing game.
I can only imagine how those who actually helped him reach his goals must feel.

Great response, great perspective...100% understand that response. For you, it's personal. That makes sense.

I wouldn't worry about it lol. I think on a website where we debate about various things we all come off as contrarians at one point or another. I know I do.

                    Biggest story around here...Vlad jr.

Sure, it's AA ball but he has a higher batting average than MLB players have OBP. Batting over .400! He's the only 19 year old in AA ball.

Rumors about him possibly ending up in AAA(being promoted on Thursday).

Really shouldn't see him this year and burn a year of eligibility for a wasted season, but if he happens to make it to the majors, he'd be the youngest position player since Profar/Harper in 2012.

Just hope Jays don't blow this. They have 2 of the top prospects in baseball in their farm system, both of which could make it in the majors within the next year or two. Keep them long term, have strong pitching staff, and build around that core. If Jays just kept their guys together at any point in the past 25 years, they'd have had some great teams (still mad they could've had Green/Delgado as 3/4 hitters and Cy Young Carpenter/Halladay leading their rotation. That'd have contended with those big Yankees/Red Sox teams of the early/mid 00s)

For 2 different AAA series this year we'll be seeing the Buffalo Wings vs Rochester Plates.

BTW regarding Vlad Jr. as much as we want to see him on the big club his defense isn't yet MLB ready. Now the Jays could release Kendrys Morales and bring him up to DH but that's not going to help his glove so yeah, it's best he stays this year in the minors and come up next year. At the very least he may be a September call up.

This leg/wing talk reminds me of the Goodfellas scene where they're digging up Billy Batts.
