I don't think you'll get much of an argument about that.

I just am concerned with the band aids used to shore up the pace. Things like a pitch clock have no place in baseball (IMO). I also would agree with limited visits from COACHES but not from catchers.

Yeah I don't think we're screaming for games to be shorter (though that's a nice added side benefit) it's the PACE of the play. If umpires actually enforced rules such as making sure the batter stays in the box and pitchers don't take a year to come set and throw a pitch than it'd make the game have more flow to it.

You don't necessarily NEED a pitch clock but if they're not willing to actually enforce what's on the books than what else can they do?

In a perfect world I wouldn't want a pitch clock.

Here's a proposed change that doesn't alter anything inside of the game but could shave a little time down if that's what we need to do in order to stop changing the game itself:

Under a new proposal by Major League Baseball, pitchers would be required to finish their warm-up pitches and be ready to make their first pitch of an inning 30 seconds before the end of all between-inning commercial breaks, sources told ESPN.com.

While I still don't think we need to shorten the game this IS something that could be a compromise. Can't comment on basketball but I know when you are at hockey games and football games it's annoying watching the players stand around at the line or in the circle waiting for the commercial to be over.

While they need to do something to get right to the action when they come back, this is really a no-go for the most part. Baseball needs these adverts during the game, and it goes deeper than that. I know that the Ballpark in Arlington has a kid "steal" third bass from the left field gate and other promotions. Most of the time, a parent pays for their kid to be out there, so the team makes money. In between action at the Ballpark is important to these teams.

Nothing in that article proposes shortening the time in between inning breaks because they know it isn't feasible for both the reasons you mention but most importantly advertising money.

Notice it even states the breaks have been longer than they are supposed to be for non nationally televised game but neither of the proposals is aimed at changing that.

Baseball officials believe that if play is ready to resume moments after each break ends, they could shorten games by 10 to 15 minutes. Just those efforts alone would bring the average game time to below three hours without enacting any other pace-of-game measures.

That reads to me like the pitchers has to have thrown the ball by the time the clock expires. Doesn't say anything about just coming set.
Here is the :12 rule from the rulebook: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info.../pitcher_8.jsp

              8.04
When the bases are unoccupied, the pitcher shall deliver the ball to the batter within 12 seconds after he receives the ball. Each time the pitcher delays the game by violating this rule, the umpire shall call “Ball.” The 12-second timing starts when the pitcher is in possession of the ball and the batter is in the box, alert to the pitcher. The timing stops when the pitcher releases the ball.
The intent of this rule is to avoid unnecessary delays. The umpire shall insist that the catcher return the ball promptly to the pitcher, and that the pitcher take his position on the rubber promptly. Obvious delay by the pitcher should instantly be penalized by the umpire.
As you can see, they're altering the rule to make it more lenient by introducing a clock.

And the quote in your post does read like they have to deliver the pitch within that time frame, but I watched a couple of AFL games on MLB Network last fall and the announcers kept saying that the pitcher only had to come set, not throw the pitch. I had the same question as you about baserunners gaining an advantage, but this will not be the case with the clock.

Here's more info about how the clock worked in the AFL (along with other measures to quicken the pace of play): http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/pace-of-game/

The videos within the link give good explanations as well.

Doolittle has a torn rotator cuff and won't be ready for the season. I'd assume Clippard will take over the roll till he's back. I wonder what took them so long to find his injury. Musta been nagging him all of season.

Calling it very minor. He got a PRP injection and at this time they're not looking at surgery.

So he'll probably have surgery in April.

Las Vegas, February 2000. VIP Lounge area above and behind home plate at Cashman Field. I was there for an EA-sponsored MLBPA event (the late, unlamented Big League Challenge). There was a smattering of EA people, MLBPA people, B-level celebs, and baseball player WAGS. And Jose Canseco's twin brother Ozzie. Typical early 2000s EA weirdness.

At a table sitting by himself was an elderly African-American gentleman. I was pretty sure who he was, but was hesitant to bother him. He saw me looking uncertain and waved me over. "Hey young fella, come and sit for a minute." I introduced myself. With a big smile on his face, he extended his hand. "Nice to meet you. You know, people call me Mr. Cub."

                          RIP

I wish I was of an age to have watched this man play the game of baseball but alas all I know are from stories about him during his playing days and interviews. Ernie Banks always seemed to be an optimistic, proud yet humble man who embodied all the great virtues of baseball and of life. He was simply the single greatest ambassador for the Cubs and the game of baseball. The world not only lost a great ballplayer but a great human being.

I'm sure he's up there in Heaven now telling his fellow teammates on God's squad "Let's play two!".

This doesn't hit me as hard as Harry since I never got to see him play, but I know how important he was to everyone associated with the Cubs. I'm sure those who did get to see his playing career are devastated right now. Very sad day.

I never saw a picture of the man without a smile on his face. Probably the most optimistic person I have ever seen, and it's such a shame he never got to see the Cubs win anything.

RIP Mr. Cub, you will be missed.
