Re: 2014 MLB Trade Deadline Thread

For the Rays, it seemed to me that the best thing would be to trade Price. So many things have to line up perfectly to win a championship and you have a guy that you are all but certain to lose after his contract ends.

Their still not even at .500 and it took them near perfect baseball over the last month to get there. There's no certainty they will win their division, let alone beat the likes of Detroit, Oakland, or LAA in the playoffs(though anything can happen). That low of a possibility of a championship can't outweigh the acquisition of the #2 prospect in the league and a highly touted(though recently lost) pitcher in his early 20s. Plus a competitive balance pick next year. And we know how much TB loves their picks.

If that truly is the offer STL is offering I don't know how they turn it down. As a Cardinals fan it would pain me to give up a guy like Taveras but I'd be alright with it as long as we can sign Price longterm. The prospect of a Wainwright, Price, Wacha rotation in the playoffs is deadly. If only the Cardinals offense could get it going.

Probably. They aren't trying to win this year and then they'll just sign him back in the offseason.

Don't do it, Alex. Not Hutch. Sanchez, sure. Not Hutch.

As of this moment, it doesn't appear Blue Jays have what it takes to get Lester

I do hope Jays get a pitcher though.Dickey,Buehrle,Hutchison,Stroman and 1 other guy seem like it'd be enough to hold things steady for that playoff push. Doesn't have to be some big name #1-2 guy in the rotation, just someone who'll be able to put up solid numbers(specifically against AL East, who Jays will be facing alot of to close out season).

Batting wise, obviously they need a 2B. Just get a good contact hitter, Jays have enough power, they need guys who can consistently get on base.

@Ken_Rosenthal Source: #Athletics also in the mix for Lester, as first reported by @GordonEdes.

So Cards are considering Lester. I don't mind bringing him in for the stretch run, my only concern is giving up to much for a rental.

BoSox want Outfielders and we have them, but hoping we don't give up the farm.

Lackey may just retire after the year rather than play for that amount.

I never understood their flirtation with Lester/Price/Hamels in the first place. They have the best #1-3 starting rotation in baseball.

They need bullpen help, badly. A lot more value can be found in subbing out replacement-level scrubs like Chris Perez and Paul Malholm for a quality reliever.
