Re: 5/2 - 5/15 Game Discussion Thread
I have no problem with Bautista's slide when you take into account how he got on base in the first place. He was intentionally thrown at with a fastball up and in that hit him right below the shoulder... all because Bautista sent those crybabys packing in the postseason last year. Was it a coincidence that they got their "revenge" on him during his last plate appearance in the last game these two teams are scheduled to play this year? Highly unlikely. Far be it from me to stick up for the Jays, but the Rangers just look like spiteful bitches in this whole situation. You lost. He flipped his bat. Like 8 months ago. Get over it.Comment

Although I'd be lying if I said I wasn't waiting the inevitable Batista Twitter rant about the fight, where I'm sure he'll clear all this up for us in a reasonable and mature manner.Comment

Re: 5/2 - 5/15 Game Discussion Thread
Was it coincidence that the pitcher that hit him was in prison when the bat flip happened (i.e. not on the Rangers, or even in baseball for that matter, so he has no reason for "revenge")? We'll never know intent of the pitch, there's a damn good chance the ball got away from him. But it was a dirty slide.

Re: 5/2 - 5/15 Game Discussion Thread
They were talking about it being Matt Bush on Baseball Tonight. It very well could have gotten away from him. Typically, when a guy is going to get hit intentionally, the catcher will set up inside to make it seem more like the pitcher was just trying to throw in and went too far in. The catcher set up toward the outside corner on this occasion.
It doesn't mean it was or wasn't intentional, but interesting (to me, at least). It also wouldn't surprise me if Bush was told to hit Bautista. He's just been called up, and surely wants to fit in with the MLB team, so I'm sure he would follow through.
On the note of having no problem with Bautista's slide, but having an issue with hitting him.. how is it different? Bautista is retaliating against someone that had nothing to do with hitting him, just like Bautista got hit by someone that had nothing to do with the reason he was getting hit.
None of this stuff makes sense in baseball, but it happens every year.Last edited by Jr.; 05-15-2016, 07:02 PM.Comment

Bautista: "I slid hard into 2B. I could have injured him, I chose not to..didn't appreciate being hit." #Bluejays #Jays
Kudos on making that tough choice to not injure the guy.

Re: 5/2 - 5/15 Game Discussion Thread
I thought about it and it means nothing.
New kid (albeit a 30 year old one) on the team gets sent out there to "put one in his ear" to show the team you're "one of us" or something along those lines. Happens in all levels of sports from high school all the way to the professional level. Even if he wasn't instructed to do it, he still could have taken it upon himself as a show of solidarity, etc. which in itself is fine. Just don't be shocked when someone retaliates due to your retaliation. It just becomes a vicious cycle. Is there a small chance that it was a mistake? Yeah, less than a 1% chance in a "normal" scenario when you look at HBP numbers league-wide. When you take into account all the other variables in play here (the bat flip, last PA in the last game between these two teams this year) that percentage decreases that much more.
Come on, man.Comment

Carlos Gomez got hit by Robbie Ross today, based on HBP numbers league-wide, musta been payback for something.Last edited by TripleCrown9; 05-15-2016, 07:16 PM.Boston Red Sox

Re: 5/2 - 5/15 Game Discussion Thread
Bautista in particular has 5809 career plate appearances and has been hit by a pitch 63 times which is roughly 1.08% percent of the time so it's not like he is a guy that gets hit much more often than the league average.Comment

Re: 5/2 - 5/15 Game Discussion Thread
I'm genuinely curious what stats/variables/equations you have to back up your claim of it being "a damn good chance" that the HBP was unintentional when the league-wide percentage of plate appearances resulting in a HBP is less than 1%.
