I like that deal. There were better shortstops on the market at the beginning of free agency but I like not being committed to your SS past age 35

From everything I have read, at the start of the offseason, the Braves started off the off-season offering in the $20M/year range similar to the contract Riley signed but for less length. 5/$100M was the last reported offer I saw. Never saw anything come out after.

        baseball ruined Manferd.
if only he could be traded to run soccer, THAT is the sport that needs major reworking afaic, not baseball

MLB ought to trade Manferd for 100,000 feet of nylon goal netting to use as foulball protection

Cubs have made some solid moves. I've liked what they've done.

I think I'd rather have Turner or Correa, even at their contracts, but at least the Cubs got one of them.

Plus a no-trade clause. I'm ok with saying no to that, AA.

I think the Cubs are paying off last year's performance and not how he'll be these 7 years. I really hope I'm dead wrong but I dont expect more than 20 fWAR total, if that.

I'm more of a bwar than an fwar guy. That said his fwar last year was 6.4. Dansby has been my favorite player since we brought him up. He spent a lot of offseason time with Washington working on his defense, and he's slowly gotten better and better year after year on the field and at the dish. He's still a streaky player, but that's who he is.

I'm not saying 6.4 fWAR should be the expectation every year. Unless he just flat out goes full Jayson Heyward, there's no reason he can't average somewhere in the 4.5 fwar at minimum over the life of that contract. Basically anything under 30 fwar out of this contract IMO would be a surprising regression.

Even if you use the $6M/WAR of a 0-2 WAR player, $25.29/6 = 4.21 fwar Using the more appropriate $8.5M/fwar and they're paying 2.97 fWAR. So even at your projection of 20ish WAR, it's still not a bad contract.

Never mind the sweepstakes. Once the dominoes fell differently it was lost. Missed amount of years which were insane however, some of my picks in dollars were insane too. Mostly disappointed with the Giants. When they said they were going all in, I pictured a Judge/Verlander as 'going all in'

On the FA market, yeah it kinda is.

                            $6.5M x 20 fWAR= $130M. $177M/6.5 = 27.23 fWAR
                            $8.5M x 20.1 fWAR = $170.85M. $177M/8.5 = 20.82 fWAR

I don't think it's unreasonable to argue somebody who finished 12th in the MVP voting last year with a GG is being paid in the 2+WAR category. It's actually a really good contract unless you're projecting him to revert all the way back to his 2019 self. 2020 (shortened) 2.3 fWAR, 2021 3.4 fWAR, 2022 6.4fWAR

That sixth year that was such a deal-breaker between the Braves and Freddie Freeman a year ago suddenly doesn’t look like a big deal.
