    Re: 2022 - 2023 Hot Stove Thread

With the real construction pics slowly coming out (as opposed to just referencing a 3d model), an interesting insight I heard about the Jays OF moves is how the new wall dimensions will impact things.

Literally nobody except their management (and construction people, and I'd imagine MLB officials since they'd probably have to approve it) know what the official dimensions will be.

But based on the real pics, it doesn't look like anyone's gonna be making over the wall type of catches, or hitting "line drive home runs", although the wall has been brought in too.

So there could be more balls going off the walls, which would require a better defensive OF to handle that. And also the analytics would tell you how guys might fare with a new wall dimension to deal with for 81 games a season. Varshos spray chart over the new Rogers Centre seems to indicate he'd be a guy who would fare real well there.

I'm having a hard time believing this isn't blatant service time manipulation from the Cubs front office. I hope I'm wrong, but given their past, it feels shady.

I don't really see it that way. Mervis broke out in a very big way (and I think in a very real/sustainable way) last year, but he pretty much came completely out of nowhere. He was undrafted in the shortened 2020 draft, struggled in Single-A in 2021, and even in the midst of his breakout was still only listed as the 50th best Cubs prospect according to FanGraphs (not really sure where he will end up on the preliminary 2023 rankings, but I guess there could be a big jump). I don't think it's unreasonable to still have some questions that you want answered before you hand a guy like that a major league job. The 1B/DH role will definitely be crowded, but I think they will give him plenty of chances in the spring to make their Opening Day roster decisions a little tougher.

Yeah some reporters jumped the gun.

He threw for the Marlins today, but he has NOT reached an agreement.

Yea I saw the bullpen part, maybe leads to a deal.

I think that's a good take as well. I'm not not sure how you don't start Mervis from the beginning considering Hosmer has been falling exponentially on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. And with the Cubs not in "Win Now" mode, there's no better time to throw Mervis out there with PCA and other young talents.
