Jays make first 2023 trade deadline move.

    Sign Chad Green.

He underwent TJ Surgery, so he'll be back probably around the all star break.

The terms of his deal are fascinating to me:

1 year $2.25M (likely won't be back until late this year recovering from TJS)

The Blue Jays can exercise a 3-year club option at $9M AAV (2024-26) after the season.

But if the Jays decline the option, Green can exercise a 1 year $6.25M player option for 2024....

But if Green declines his option, the Jays can then exercise another 2-year club option for $21M (2024-25, $10.5M AAV with playing time escalators)

So it could go a number of ways:

Blue Jays exercise their first club option:
      2023: $2.25M
      2024: $9M
      2025: $9M
      2026: $9M

Blue Jays decline their option, but Green exercises his option:
      2023: $2.25M
      2024: $6.25M (plus a possible $1M incentives)

Blue Jays decline their first option, & Green declines his, but the Blue Jays exercise their second option:
      2023: $2.25M
      2024: $10.5M (plus a possible $1M in incentives)
      2025: $10.5M (plus a possible $1M in incentives)

Or everyone declines everything and Green is a free agent after 2023. Gonna set up a really interesting "game theory" scenario come next November. I would imagine option 2 is the most likely but we will see.

It seems weird. Why would Jays decline, Green declines, just for Jays to pick up the second option? Wouldn't it make more sense to just pick up the option in the first place?

But basically...if Green is good, Jays take first option.

If Green isn't good, he'll pick up his option,

Yeah it's an odd one. I guess the only scenario where option 3 happens is if both parties try to get cute with each other and the Jays want to keep Green but decline the first option betting he will take his option, but Green declines his option betting the Jays actually will pick up the second option (or betting that he can beat 1 year $6.25M in FA...which could happen if he shows he's healthy and pitches well whenever he comes back).

Bo asking for as much as he asked for, and now this, I hope his eventually frew agency doesn't hurt the Jays like Marners hurt the Leafs (great young player who has a heavily involved father who gets his son to hold up the team for way more than they deserve rather than take slightly less to help the team win).

I never realised it worked this way.
I always assumed when there was both a player and team option,
both had to opt in, if even just one opted out, the contract was over.

Yeah that's how most mutual options work.

This is a unique one because it has 3 separate options tacked on (2 different team options and a player option). It's not really a mutual option because if one side declines, then it triggers a new option with different terms for the other side to accept or decline.

Not really sure how often stuff like this happens, but it is a little like Julio Rodriguez's contract that has a team option that if declined triggers a separate player option. I won't try to explain all of the different ways that deal can change over the next decade but it is pretty interesting

Sounds like Jays avoided arbitration with Bo and signing him to a reported 3 year deal.

Darvish getting a six-year deal for $108 million.

                    He's not a free agent

                    He's 36.

This has something to do with helping San Diego in terms of the luxury cap.

Really only a 5 year deal since it includes this year and ends 2028. He was a FA after this season. AAV of 18 and lowers the cap this year giving an extra 4-5M to spend. Not bad the way contracts are going for SP. Taijuan Walker and Jamison Taillon are getting this same AAV. Would much rather have yu.

I think the issue is having Yu at that price at 40-42, not necessarily at this age.

Look what the Mets are paying their 40+ year old pitchers. Anyways, I think Yu is a pitcher who can still throw well that old given he doesn’t rely on velocity and throws a ton of different pitches. Also, Yu’s contract is reportedly very front loaded so he won’t be getting paid much the latter years.
