Took on Myles Straw's terrible contract partly to get the extra international bonus money.

On the same day, Sasaki announces he is signing with the Dodgers

    Absolutely mind boggling ineptness.

EDIT: I just don't understand how you make the Straw trade without an assurance from Sasaki's camp that the extra international bonus money is going to get the deal done.

The Jays are simply not a destination team. We have absolutely ZERO draw for any free agents, unless we were to pay 20% higher than anyone else. Canadian taxes suck compared to US taxes so that is an automatic negative. Plus, we have shown no loyalty to any of our players that are homegrown. We have treated Bichette like trash, Vladdy like trash, Manoah like trash, and traded away our best prospect in Moreno. Why would you want to come here??

Oh, Romano has a rough injury filled year, so let him walk. This management group is absolutely terrible and needs to be replaced completely. It is sad to be a fan of this team and that is coming from a Leafs fan!!

Money aside, destination aside, Andrew Friedman aside, if on top of everything else the Dodgers are going to corner the Japanese market/pipeline then the whole league is truly ****ed

The thing that bothers me the most is the Friedman thing, this isn't hindsight. While he was still with the Rays I said let's fire Cashman and bring him in and let him do his thing. Give the guy doing all those ingenious/cutting edge stuff on a small budget in our own division a Yankees-type payroll and let's see what he can do. Well, the Dodgers did what I hoped for and here we are.

And yes, the Dodgers-Japanese thing might be a "California is much closer to Japan" thing, but at least we would have Friedman on our side. Plus, until recently, the Yankees were "Japan's team", not a distinction we can claim anymore.

Tanner Scott gets a massive deal to head to the Dodgers now.

              4 years $72 million.

Dodgers sign Tanner Scott 4 years $72 million. After this move I think the Dodgers may be the favorite to win the NL West

Where will these Dodgers rank among hated teams of all time (in the moment)?

Up there with the Astros? Though to be fair, it wasn't until during/after the pandemic where people got to boo them for it even though they were really booing the teams of the late 2010s.

                  The Yankees in the 2000s?

The Dodgers on paper are so far above every other team you might be seeing them own the league for quite some time. They should break the wins record for sure

I will never hate any team as much as I hate the Yankees. They could win 10 straight titles will still hate the Yankees more.

As a franchise I hate the Yankees more, but in terms of teams, I hate the 2025 Dodgers more than the 2025 Yankees.

The league really needs a stricter cap floor/ceiling and harder taxes on luxury taxes (and no deferred payments). The MLB contracts might have to change like the NHL ones did. In the NHL there was once a case of a guy signing a huge deal which was heavily frontloaded so that his cap hit later on didn't hurt the team. The league put their foot down and introduced "AAV, average annual value". So no matter how front or backloaded the deal is, your average annual salary is what is on the payroll.

Would be nice for the MLB to introduce that. If a team wants to defer payments for a guy go ahead, but his 10 year 300m deal still counts on your payroll as 30m a year so you can't just get around luxury taxes as easily.

Two things that really bother me

The first being when the Mets got Steve Cohen as an owner it took less then a year to put in a rule that most people call the Cohen tax. yet the dodgers seem to be able to spend at will and nothing was done

The second being that all this deferred money has to be paid eventually. The league is in a tough spot. How do you lock out the players as an ownership group when it is one of your own in the group causing mayhem

I believe they need a rule that any player coming over from another country goes into the draft.

It already does (basically) work like that.

The Dodgers are paying Ohtani $2M each year, but the Luxury Tax hit is ~$46M because the estimated present value of his $700M contract is roughly $460M when you account for the deferred money.

For all intensive purposes Ohtani signed a 10 year $460M contract.
