I was one of those Mets fan that did not want to see Mike go, I missed seeing him today for the Mets, I hope Mike hits 30 or more HR's, I wish nothing for the best for him. I think you Padres fan may have a nice Treat with Piazza this year.

Peavy is straight up dealing. Man I love his fire and intensity.

          Can't believe he's only 24.

And are you sure about your last statement? It's nice to know you're already pegging me as an apologist of the team even though the main point of the argument had NOTHING to do with the Padres. I never said it was a good move to trade away Nady now did I? How does saying he had his chance and f'd it up last year make it sound like I'm defending the Padres? I never said that reason enough to trade him now and I never said that he didn't have talent.

Is that it? I think it's best if I put the Nady stuff away. Bottomline is I hope he succeeds, I rarely wish a former-Padre to do bad unless the guy was total caca on the team.

Well the Padres passed the first test. Although it's easier to pass when Peavy's tossing a gem like that.

Bigger test tomorrow, as the Padres face a pretty good pitcher in Matt Morris, who's matched up against Shawn Estes, a pitcher who's struggled the past several years. Is Shawn Estes really our #2 starter?

Estes ERA's the last few years.

                    2005 4.81
                    2004 5.84
                    2003 5.73
                    2002 5.10

Does this make anyone nervous besides me.

Noah Lowery vs. Chris Young should be an interesting matchup on Wednesday.

I'm expecting a different game tomorrow than this one. I think the Giants will score at least 4 runs against Estes. There are a number of Giants who have had good success hitting off of Estes. Tomorrow will be a tough one and I expect the Giants to take it just by looking at the matchup.

Sadly that's a glaring hole with the Padres. The lack of a legitimate number-2 starter and it seriously needs to be addressed.

I just find it hard to believe for a team that since Kevin Towers has been here has invested so many draft picks on arms over the years, that Shawn Estes is the best we can come up with to start game 2.

YEAH, that is a shock, but Peves is stud. I would have to say him and Santana are the best! I think you guys would be real threat if you had some better starter.

I can't disagree with that. They had so many pitchers who were hyped up, Dennis Tankersley, Mike Bynum, and Jason Middlebrook, and none of them were good enough to crack a rotation. The Padres do have depth in AAA in Jared Wells (he's been in the minors for a few years) and Sean Thompson (same as Wells), but there has been a huge gap between Peavy and these starting pitchers in terms of quality pitching.

If there's one thing for sure, Kevin Towers is good at getting AAAA starting pitchers. It's absolutely ridiculous considering that our ace is a 14th rounder (I might be off) and we draft guys like Tim Stauffer, who is now a fringe major league starting pitcher at the moment, with the first round.

Seriously, but our next up-and-coming starter with a high ceiling is at least a year away and there's no one out there that I think Towers would trade for. I think I'd rather have David Wells around instead of Estes.

As I said, who was the last homegrown arm, not named Peavy the Pads have developed that's been worth a damn?

How about a position player not named Khalil Greene? Barfield maybe if he pans out.

For a small market team like this, not being able to scout, draft and develop homegrown talent is a kiler, and the #1 reason why they have been so bad for the better part of 3 decades.
