Re: 2008 Chicago Cubs
As long as he produces with RISP, I don't care. But he grounds out so ****ing often it is absurd. He should be hitting line drives, but instead he swings at off-speed **** outside and low ALL THE TIME. This usually happens right after he takes a meat pitch down the middle for a strike. He probably grounds into more double plays than any other #3 hitter in the bigs.
I think the league has pegged him as a 1st-pitch-taker. If he doesn't vary his approach, then his results will not improve.
I don't expect him to improve much at all. This team has been winning more often despite him rather than because of him. He has gotten away from what made him such a good hitter around the time he came over from Florida. He was a very patient hitter at the plate. He is not patient any longer, and does not seem to have the eye that he had before.
Also, if you watch, you will see that he dips his back shoulder a ton. Compare him side by side with, say, Adam Dunn. While they are of different builds, both are quite tall. When Dunn swings, however, his shoulder remain almost completely level; not so with Lee.Australian Rules Football...just sayin'Comment

Re: 2008 Chicago Cubs
I just found it funny that you were giving us all these stats, yet more than half of them were a little off.
But on the topic at hand, I agree with you about Lee. This kind of goes back to the poster earlier in the year who said that they'd rather have Lee hit .280, as long as he provides more power. The problem with Lee is that after the ~first month, both his avg and his HR rate decreased substantially. He's nowhere near the hitter he was 2 or 3 years ago. It'd make a lot of sense, based on the numbers, to have Lee and Soriano switch spots in the order.
Some stats:
Lee: Flyball: 33.4% | Groundball: 45.5% | Strikeout: 21.1% | GIDP: 5.9%
Soriano: Flyball: 44.1% | Groundball: 29.7% | Strikeout: 26.1% | GIDP: 1.8%Last edited by Jodaddy; 08-07-2008, 08:02 AM.Comment

Re: 2008 Chicago Cubs
First, we are over 20 games over .500...so I am not exactly 'complaining'...
The Lee issue, however, is further complicated by Ramirez. While there are few very consistent hitters in the game, these two guys are streaky as hell. They have a tendency to hit bottom at the same time.
I have no problem with Lee batting 3rd, or Ramirez 4th, or whatever. I still believe that if they were broken up by a hitter that was more patient (ARam has really improved here, tho), they would be even more deadly. I thought Fukudome was that guy, but he seems completely out of sync of late, has lost some patience, and NEVER tries to pull the ball.
I feel dirty saying it, but putting Edmonds between them might be a good idea. His average is low, but he is a smart hitter that usually works the count. Lee and ARam should be smart and mature enough to hit both 3 and 5 depending on who is tearing it up.
In the end, I think the middle of the order does not have to be superior, given the quality we are getting from Theriot, DeRosa, et al. I will point to the Yankees teams of Brosius, Oneill, Jeter, etc. Few, if any, real mashers on the team. Good pitching, decent defense, and a lineup of capable batsmen.Australian Rules Football...just sayin'Comment

I am proud to admit I was wrong about him, plenty of us were wrong about him. It's a great thing that he's really started to succeed.Comment

Re: 2008 Chicago Cubs
Gotta love our pitching staff. From the starters to the back end of the pen, things are looking good. We don't have a go-to lefty int he pen, but with Samardzija, Marmol, and Wood it might not matter.Australian Rules Football...just sayin'Comment

Re: 2008 Chicago Cubs
i know Lou is trying to jump-start fukudome, but can we really justify batting Theriot at 8?
if they are going to bat him at the bottom of the order, i would almost rather have the pitcher bat 8th and Theriot 9th.
EDIT: I suppose it doesn't matter. Every position player has a hit and the 5th inning isn't even over yet.Last edited by fugazi; 08-14-2008, 07:40 PM.Australian Rules Football...just sayin'Comment

Sweet Jesus does Howry suck!!
I mean he is like giving up 3 and 4 runs EVERYTIME he takes the mound! Lou needs to do something with him. Good thing the offense is sticking right now.
Lets finish these guys off.....oh ****, Ohman is in for the Braves. We should score at least 6 runs.Comment
