    Re: 2009 Cincinnati Reds

Right now Jay Bruce reminds me of Adam Dunn except with less power. I think Bruce will be fine - he's a great hitter that is just learning how to hit in the bigs. I remember going to a Dayton Dragons game several years back and pointing Bruce out to my wife and explaing how he was our 1st round pick. He commenced to drive in 5 runs and went 3-4 with zero homeruns. The guy can hit we just have to give him some time.

As for Rosales. I don't think its his time yet. It may be next year or the year after that but I agree, he's not ready THIS year.

Lincoln is terrible...end of story. And I'm not suprised Matry said that. Remember the days of Marty and Joe in the booth. Ah those were the days.

Love Dickerson in CF, I do not know why more Reds fans are not more excited about this guy. He should have been the starting day CF and maybe Stubbs at LF. Taveras is horrible right now. Dusty needs to put Bruce back at leadoff to get him going again.

I didn't understand that at all. I stopped watching when the rain started but turned it on again later when I was about to go to bed and saw they were still playing. Couldn't believe that Cordero pitched after that 2-hour delay.

He threw nine pitches before the delay, whats the big deal???
It was exactly the same as getting both saves of a double header which he said he had done numerous times in his career. You guys kill me with your negativity.
I reliever's arm is use to pitching numerous times a night, have you guys ever watched a game before. There are many nights a reliever will warm up 3 or 4 times in a game.
He warmed up, pitched 9 freaking pitches, had a two hour rest, warmed up again and then pitched. Its like COCO said you guys are looking for an excuse or to blame Dusty, the simple fact is he just didnt pitch well after the delay. He was due to blow a save, he had converted 30 in a row.

Oh yeah who ended up winning the game?

And what did he do? He walks Dukes, throws 4 pitches to Willingham, sits for 2 hours, finishes a walk for Willingham, strikes out Belliard, and then Bard, who can't hit worth a crap, knocks in the first of two runs off of him that tied the game. How is that good?

Did they end up winning? Yes, they did. Was it necessary to go to 12 innings to do it? I don't think so. They could have brought Weathers in to pitch after the delay.

I'm very much aware of guys warming up several times a game and I'm not looking for a reason to blame Rusty...err Dusty.

Who's being negative? I'm just curious as to what Baker's reasoning was for bringing Coco back in after getting psyched up for the 9th, throwing 9 pitches, and then sitting for two hours.

Taveras.......In 4AB's saw a total of 7 pitches. Not good for a slumping lead-off/speed guy.

I was bummed to see Taveras and Gonzo 1-2. I guess Dusty's trying to shake it up a bit. He has done a masterful job with a team that has yet to hit. Thank God we have pitching.

That kind of stuff always drives me nuts. Last night Hochevar threw 4 pitches in the top of the 1st. 4 to three batters! That's ridiculous. How about someone taking a few to see what he has? Taveras bunts the first pitch of the game and gets thrown out. Maybe the scouting report said to swing early at Hochevar though. I don't know. The offense is anemic. I do know that.

Is that good for a leadoff man? Uh, no. Taveras tied Jason LaRue (2006) for hitless longevity and next on the list was Alex Ochoa, 0 for 31 back in 2001. the only thing I remember about Ochoa is that he looked like Denzel Washington

But wait. It gets better. The Reds had a runner on first with one out in the seventh. Taveras up. First pitch. Swing. Grounder to short. Double play. Move over Denzel. And keep all sharp objects and dangerous liquids out of Taveras’ reach. Then he grounded out in the ninth and is now 0 for 32, one away from a 36-year-old record - 0 for 33 by Denis Menke in 1973.

And to think Menke was later a hitting coach for the Reds. And he was hitting coach when Ochoa went 0 for 31.

UST WHEN YOU think you’ve seen it all, something head-shaking happens. In the fifth inning Saturday of the Reds 7-4 loss, KC pitcher Kyle Davies walked two. Brandon Phillips was up and had a 3-and-0 count. Take one pitch? Take two pitches? Naw, he swung away and flied to right. Un-beeeeee-leeeee-vable. And at the time Davies had thrown 93 pitches in 5 2/3 innings.

Was he given the hit-away sign. Was he given the take sign. He was given the take sign and ignored it. Didn’t even look for the sign.

Manager Dusty Baker was not happy and said Phillips missed the take sign, but Phillips said, “Why shouldn’t swing in that situation? To tell you the truth, I didn’t even look for a sign.

“Honestly, in that situation, why wouldn’t I swing at a 3-and-0, that’s just my opinion. We only had two hits at the time and our offense stinks right now. I respect my teammates and they see what’s going on. We haven’t faced anybody that overmatched us. If we’re facing No. 1 pitchers, but we’re not and our team is too damn good to be making outs against the pitchers we face. We should be undefeated on this trip.”

Baker disagrees about Phillips swinging at the 3-0.

“That was the big play and Brandon was supposed to be taking,” he said. “That could have been the ball game. We had the pitcher on the ropes, he had just walked two and thrown nine balls, then threw three more balls and we gave Brandon the take. Said he didn’t see it. In that situation, you have to know to take that pitch even if you didn’t see the sign.”

                              Phillips disagrees with that, too.

“We were struggling getting men on base and we’re not hitting with runners in scoring position,” Phillips said. “I had the opportunity, I swung at 3-0. I was trying to make something happen and it didn’t happen. If I would have come through it would have been the best play of the year. For future reference, I will not do it again. I apologized to everybody.”

                              I still say, un-beeeeeee-leeeeee-vable.
                              I agree with Hal again.

Yeah, I'm sure BP will not ignore another sign again. If we could somehow give Rosales the ability that BP has, we'd have damn near the perfect leader for this team.
