I mean, were almost as bad as the Pirates right now. The same team that has traded away all its starters from the beginning of the season. We are clearly in free fall mode.

I swear it's the same story year after year.

I hope we don't trade Harang just because I love the guy so much for what he's given the Reds, but if it improves the team down the road, then a trade should be made.

Looking through the stats for our players, it's amazing we're not doing worse then we are. All our pitchers have ERA's over 4 (besides Cueto), with some even into the 5's (Arroyo, Owings) and 7's (Bailey). The only players who get on base on this team are Votto (who's just sick), Phillips, and EE. But EE can't hit otherwise (Mendoza line...). Just a very depressing team right now.

Wladimir Balentien, huh? I was actually hoping the Reds might take a shot on him when I saw the Mariners DFA'd him. But, I hoped that they could wait until after the 10 days were up or wouldn't give up a whole lot for him. I kind of liked Robert Manuel though. Seemed like he had good stuff. But, if they can get a 25-year-old with plus-power, and who probably needed a change of scenery, I'm willing to gamble I guess.

Hopefully we can strike gold with him like we have with others(Phillips, Hamilton), but I'm not getting my hopes up. His power numbers will likely increase because of a better hitters park, but he doesn't have much plate disipline from what I've heard(and by seeing his K/BB).

Yeah, his plate discipline is pretty pathetic. Hopefully the coaches can work with him on that, even if it means spending time at Louisville. I still think Seattle brought him to the majors too early.

Man this team is getting harder and harder to watch.
I am at the game right now and the score is 7-2 Padres in the 8th.
Watching this team play the last week or so I say we get rid of everyone but Joey and Brandon. The are the only 2 legit positions players on our active roster right now.

Boy did I get lucky by attending the game this past Monday. I may only go to a couple more this year. We'll see. Definitely want to go to the Aug. 18 for Jackdog's son's birthday. Did we ever decide if that was going to be a OS'ers gathering or what?

Volquez's simulated game was cut short today because of elbow pain. He might need surgery, looks like he'll be out for a lot longer.

Yeah, I heard that. I have a bad feeling about it.

So were EE, Roenicke, and Stewart worth dealing for Rolen? Time will tell. I hope the intangibles, as well as some tangibles, with Rolen far outweigh what they gave up to get him. Hated giving up two young pitchers like that but this team seems lost. Rolen and his experience might be exactly what they need. Have no idea.

I really don't care that Edwin is gone, but I've heard some good things about the two pitchers. I just hope that Rolen can stay healthy(he's had back issues) or this deal is going to be terrible. It's way to late to salvage this season IMO, but maybe Rolen can provide leadership for this year and next. Our lineup tonight looks absolutely terrible...

                    Drew Sutton lf
                    Adam Rosales 3b
                    Joey Votto 1b
                    Brandon Phillips 2b
                    Jonny Gomes rf
                    Laynce Nix cf
                    Alex Gonzalez ss
                    Ryan Hanigan c
                    Justin Lehr p

Sure Rolen will be in there tomorrow, but this lineup is not that good. Nix got exposed, Sutton has been bad(in very limited time though). Gomes has been pretty solid this year, and obviously Votto and Phillips are good. Hanigan looks like he'll be the starter next year as he's been really good this year. Gonzalez and Rosales have not done much at the plate this year.

The only chance of him getting better at hitting is at Louisville. Jacoby is not a good hitting coach and Pole is not a good pitching coach. I think those two need to go and then maybe we can make players out of some of these guys.

As far as the Rolen trade, I am happy with it. Hate to see the pitchers go but you have to give up something and I at least like the fact that the management are trying to improve the team.

I'm glad someone else said it and not me. I've wondered whether Jacoby was an issue or not. Nice to see someone else has thought the same thing. I do like Pole as pitching coach but the whole Todd Coffey thing bothers me. Coffey says he is excelling with the Brewers using a pitch that the Reds were trying to get him away from using. If that is the case, why were the Reds doing that? Or, is Coffey just full of BS trying to blame the Reds for confidence issues he had?

I thought that Jacoby was supposed to be some great hitting coach but I haven't seen him develop anyone outside of maybe Brandon Phillips, and I am not even sure he has contributed much towards him.

As far as Dick Pole goes, his claim to fame (in my opinion) is Maddux saying he owes Pole his career. Otherwise how many pitching prospects have we had over the past several years that have turned into nothing. If a guy like Coffey was unhittable and then got off track, what happened to getting him back on track? Who has he really developed. It seems to me that Ted Powers may be a better pitching coach as he seems to keep the guys in Triple A on target until they get to the bigs. Then they struggle and then send them back down for Powers to work on them. I Pole was so dang good, couldn't he just as easily work on them? Don't get me wrong, I understand the concept of pitchers losing confidence if not performing well in the majors so you send them back down, but I truly can't remember a single pitcher on the Reds who not only said but showed that Pole helped them progress.

Thats is of course all from an outsider's perspective.

Dusty's finally moving Gonzalez out of the two hole and Hanigan in. I like the move because Hanigan has been pretty solid this whole year, and Gonzalez just decreases our chance to get ahead in the first inning by a whole lot.

is Valaika even ready though? I was under the impression most of those guys in AA were a year or two away.

As for the deals, glad to see EE gone. I like Rolen but there's no way that's the move that will put the Reds in contention. I mean come on, getting swept by the Padres, at home, and now the Rockies? Let's face it the Reds are done this season.
