Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread

I feel like the tagline "His ceiling isn't as high" is always attached to guys that come out of college and produce right away.

Like they've already reached their potential and that is the end of the road.

I think the ranking is accurate, and not being partial, but he has been far and away the most productive prospect in the minor leagues from my perspective. Kid is only 22 years old, and we have no idea how much better he can get. But I do know that I'm ready to find out.

MLB.com hasn't related the prospects yet, but I think Mayo will put Bryant #1. He seemed very high on him during the futures game, plus buxton has been out for most of the year. Other guys rated ahead of Bryant (preseason #8) haven't had anywhere near the success he's had

I wish I could fast-forward to like two or three years from now to see where all our prospects stand. I seriously can not wait for them to develop. We have something special brewing!

Came up with this trade the other night and my buddies actually didn't give me a ton of crap for it....lol:

Blue Jays get: Castro, Arrieta, Almora, and McKinney.

Cubs get: Sanchez, Norris, and Pompey.

            Yay or nay?

No thanks. Arrieta looks to have Ace stuff and ability. Castro is a perennial AS at the 2nd most important position on the field. I don't like the idea of trading proven commodities for prospects until you can no longer afford said commodities. Castro and Arrieta have a lot of team control left.

Arrieta is 28 years old. Not old by any means, but not young either. Castro is still a headcase.

You also get 2 frontline starters and your CF of the future.

Arrieta has 3 years of team control left, I believe. Castro is signed to a very team-friendly contract with 3 years remaining. Despite his mental issues in the past, he's still a very good hitter and is showing much more maturity this season as well as better defense.

And Almora or McKinney could very well be the "CF of the future" for the Cubs. In fact, Almora is expected to be just that.

The 2 arms are projected as possible front-line starters, but we all know how pitching prospects are very volatile and are just as likely to flame out due to injury as they are to meet those expectations.

This is just my personal opinion. I'd much rather keep the 2 guys who you have a very good idea what you're going to get out of them at the MLB level.

If Baez goes to second, where does Russell go when he's ready?

Who knows. Probably have a couple of years before that becomes an issue.

I fully expect one of Castro, Baez, or Russell, along with one of the OF prospects, to be moved for pitching. But I'm guessing it'll be for an established, top of the rotation, starting pitcher. Not prospects.

I saw Norris and Pompey at the Future's Game. Those 2 are going to be nasty.

                        I hear you though.

The biggest nay possible. I don't want anything to do with Aaron Sanchez. It would take Sanchez + Norris + Pompey to get us to part ways with just Starlin, IMO.

As of right now, I wouldn't support any trade that sent away any of our top ten prospects for someone who is isn't proven. Yes, we lack pitching prospects, but that proposed deal does little to help our cause.

That trade wouldn't happen for just Starlin. AA would probably laugh at that.

Theo would laugh at the original deal. That would be atrocious and I would hope Ricketts would fire them all if they did it. The only people that still like the Sanchize are Blue Jays homers and prospect guys who think plus plus stuff will somehow be a cure for minus minus command/control.

You're right, AA would probably laugh at that, but that's at least what we'd ask for.

Two top 50 prospects + a guy whose stock is falling rapidly for a very young, 3x All-Star SS who is controlled until 2020 on an extremely team friendly deal. (people will say Castro's All-Star appearances are a result of the Cubs having to have someone to represent them, but that's BS and for another time..) There is no doubt in my mind that's what we'd ask for. AA can laugh himself to death, Castro is valuable. More valuable than any of our prospects minus Bryant IMO. Castro's more of a proven player, he's up and he's producing.

People really, really like to overvalue/hype prospects.

Realistically, the trade never happens, and Theo & Co would never consider it. We want to be competitive, and we want to start that next year. Pompey/Norris shouldn't be ready until at least 2016, and a number of things could happen to slow that down. Castro is a very important piece of us being competitive.

We've got a stockpile of position prospects. Let's not overthink it, not everyone is knocking down the door for a promotion. Let's just ride it out and deal with it when we get there.
