Jon Heyman of CBS Sports also hears that the Cubs have made a new five-year offer to Samardzjia, but he says the number is “definitely not in the vicinity” of Bailey’s $105MM guarantee and could be more in the $75-80MM range. Samardzija and his agents have not countered the offer, he adds.

Time to ship him off.
Jeff Samardzija is not worth over $100 million in any league and definitely not this one.Cubs | Bulls | Dolphins | 'Noles

He's insisting on about $20 mil per year. I also read that he wants six years instead of five, pushing his demands into the $120 million dollar range.
I'm torn on Shark. I understand that he wants to win and he wants paid, but I don't think he's worth 100+ million. The only way that I end up happy from letting him go is if we get the Matt Garza type trade package and then some. And I think that's justifiable, because you get a year and a half of control of him opposed to the few months Garza had left.
He's definitely getting traded by the deadline. I've been reading that the Royals and Giants have interest, in addition to a few more teams like the Jays and Mariners that need SP. I don't think the Giants have the pieces to do it, but I think Dayton Moore is dumb enough to send the farm if he thinks the Royals are in it.
Here's Kris Bryant's HR, and one excited fan:

He's rejected it. I've read that our offer was a "slightly" higher than $85 million.

Hopefully the Cubs can get a solid deal for Hammel that will be a nice jumping point for a Samardzija deal. David Price being available will affect that as well.Comment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Alright, I've been super busy for awhile now and haven't gotten to pay as much attention to the team as I'd like to. What do I need to know about what's been going on this year, how our young guys are doing and everything.

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
We're contending for the #1... pick in the draft
Samardzija and Hammel are going to be traded before the deadline, as both have been pitching well.
We don't score runs when Samardzija pitches.
Jake Arrieta has been a pleasant surprise, and is also pitching well.
Darwin Barney still can't hit. However, Rizzo and Castro can. Both are playing much better than they did last year. (And I think that's an understatement)
Edwin Jackson is a roller coaster, occasionally showing why we paid him, but most times doing the opposite. Think he has a 5+ ERA.
Welington Castillo getting hurt really emphasizes the importance of system catching depth, something we don't have.
Mike Olt has struggled, but I've been impressed by Justin Grimm in relief.
Players seem to like playing for Rick Renteria.
Baez got off to a slow start in AAA, but is trying his best to turn it around. Kris Bryant was just promoted to AAA himself. Bryant has never stopped mashing the ball.
Jorge Soler and CJ Edwards have been battling injuries, and haven't played much this season in the minors.
That's about all I've got, lol. To me, the biggest thing is that Rizzo/Castro have turned it around. Our core guys have played well, and that has me genuinely excited for the future.Comment

Cubs schedule for this weekend is a weird one. They have a 4 game set against the Nationals starting today through Saturday with Sunday off. Teams usually have a weekday off rather than a Sunday.Comment

There's some kind of parade on Sunday, and the Cubs agreed to play a doubleheader on Saturday.Comment
