Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread

Campana will get better with experience. The more at bats he gets, the better his eye will get and the contact will follow. If it weren't for Reed Johnson I would say that he's our 4th OF. I completely agree with Baughn, Spring Training will be interesting. I can't wait to see how everything shapes out.

On a side note, Bud Selig has finally stepped in and said that he will decide the compensation for Theo. The Boston Globe reported that an unnamed AL GM said that the Sox will receive a "significant" player in return for Epstein. Hopefully they give them Soriano and all of his contract

IMO the whole compensation thing is ridiculous and unjustified. It's not like we took Adrian Gonzalez from them mid contract. He's a damn GM for god sakes. If he wanted to leave, that should be allowed.

As far as Campana is concerned, I see his peak being around the .270 range. The thing he needs to work on the most is his plate discipline. A .303 OBP for a lead off hitter isn't going to cut it and with his lack of power, isn't going to garner much playing time.

The kid is only 25 and in his first year in the bigs, he definitely could have played worse. He's definitely not going to be a world beater but with some work he could definitely be a good bench player/spot starter for us.

The compensation issue is ridiculous. It's not like the Red Sox had to let us talk to him because he did have a year left on his contract. Regardless, he did get a promotion from GM to President of Baseball Operations. If this is such a big deal then why aren't we talking to the Padres about compensation for Hoyer/McLeod? They left their teams to take the same position with another, both under contract for a few more years.

We are, I believe both sides are waiting to see what Boston gets.

I'm anxious to see what we're going to give. I'm sure that it won't be detrimental to the franchise in any way though. They're saying "significant" players, but it all depends on how you view significance. Is a MLB player significant? Is a top twenty prospect? We'll see.

Vitters, Lake are the names I've heard early on. Don't listen to any Boston writers, I believe they were the ones who seriously believed Garza/Castro was possible. They'll get a decent prospect for compensation though.

Odds are Boston is trying to get a pitcher. My guess is Carpenter, Jackson, Dolis, Chen, or McNutt will be headed out. I'd guess one of those plus cash considerations or a very low level player. I don't think Boston wants Vitters or Lake. They want/need young pitching and I think Chicago can give up one of those guys. My guess is Carpenter, because he's the most MLB ready and has had some success. I can live with that.

Hell, they can take Vitters for free if they want lol

If it is Carpenter, good, just as long as it's not Jackson or McNutt, I'm happy. Just get this crap over with already. It has already been dragged out long enough.

I'd prefer Jackson over Carpenter though. Our best MiLB pitchers are Carpenter, Whitenack, and McNutt, at least in the high levels. Jackson has been hovering in AAA for a long time.

Edit: I forgot Dolis, he's also very good.

I dunno about Carpenter, if he can get his control a little bit better. He has closer type stuff. Jackson is fine with me. But I agree get this over with already.

Great point, Boston will probably get a pitcher and by all means giving them Carpenter is fine. Vitters to San Diego makes sense; Vitters to anywhere makes sense actually. I know that there's a competition at 3B, but I don't see how it isn't Ian Stewart's spot. Sure he had some struggles last year, but IMO there's no way Theo goes out and trades for a backup third baseman. Especially since we gave up Andrew Cashner in the process.

SD will get a low prospect player. Theo's comp. will be much greater. I think SD gets a very low level guy.

I should have specified, I meant Brett not Jay. I didn't mean to group him in lol

Cashner wasn't involved in the Stewart trade.

I hope that we aren't settling for Stewart at 3B, but for right now it looks like he will be the starter for the time being.

I wouldn't say that his spot is guaranteed though. I know Vitters is on the 40 man now, and is coming off a good full season in AA. Obviously he still has some things to prove, has to work on his plate discipline and tighten up his defense. In all seriousness, I wouldn't write him off just yet, especially with the youth movement that Theo seems to be working towards.

I think Vitters is going to be starting soon. However, I think Stewart will be effective. I really like what we've done and am excited mostly to see what LaHair does. A lot of people say out system isn't deep, but I can name a lot of prospects that have a shot at being very good big leaguers.
